Night Vision Gen 1, 2, 3 Comparison

Comparison of Night vision units of each generation.
Gen 1 - Soviet Cyclop
Gen 1+ Pulsar Challenger
Gen 2 - British IM101
Gen 2+ Chinese NNVT
Gen 3 - Russian MNV-K
In the dark and with a 850nm and a 940nm IR LED torch/Flashlight.
As always filming through NODs is a hassle as the camera often wants to focus on parts of the unit or not expose the image well. You can always see better with your eyes through these units than a camera can. So all of these will look better in person.
The camera had a set focus and exposure for most of the video, however I had to switch this off for the Gen 2+ as the camera would refuse to focus through the lens.

Greetings from Ukraine, excellent review, I have a Soviet Cyclop Gen 1+, it is still working, since 1991, I bought it an 850 nm VCSEL laser illumination, but it does not see the 940 nm range, practically at all.👍💪😯✌

I just bought an X-Vision Thermal model XVTM1 and it's simply amazing. You can see a vehicle hot calipers and a person body thermal signature at 1,900 yards.....and crystal clear sharpness using only moonlight. Thanks for the video......

What has the moon to do with the image or sharpness? There is not even a difference between daylight or zero light. What would be the point of thermal (infrared) if you need moon light????? Wtf, this is not how physics are working. Bruh

I think the american gen3, that have a hard time with picking up longer wavelenth Ir, are early units. Some have a blue shimmer to the photocathode. I think that is zinc doted gallium arsenide. While modern ones are indium doted. Those have a pretty wide spectral response. And there are more advanced dotings these days, that expand the spectral response even more. They use names like enhanced red.

do you have any suggestion as to what NM ir torch i should get? i’ve got the filin-1 which is basically a pnv57e but i can’t really find any info as to how many NM it picks up

Could I please ask you to show a simple thing on video with the night vision? I only saw one video ever where someone records a radium dial through one of those tubes, and you can see individual and very bright flashes from the decay, could you record it from some of your dials? Even if the zns is burned I'm pretty sure you would be able to see it, i really wished someone else showed that on youtube, thanks!!!!!

Not an airgun but ive got the pard 007 on my .17HMR, brill bit of kit for about £400

Sadly airgun recoil can damage scopes pretty easily that are fine on rifles. I'll do a video eventually with an IR laser on a crossbow or air gun.

Yeah pretty accurate but you can often get lucky with people selling it a lot cheaper due to scuffs, blems etc.

Well assuming you found them sold commercially, rather than military stuff being sold second hand. Gen 1+ £300+ Gen 2+ 2000+ Gen 3 5000+ maybe. Really hard to say because of all the surplus units showing up at various prices.

It partially depends on where you live and how patient you are. A modern US gen 3 tube will go for 3000USD commercially, but it is possible to find one for under $1000 if you are patient and make connections.
