Huh, never thought I'd see Don Bluth and Ralph Bakshi together in the same room but here we are.

That's the exact thought I had when I spotted this video.

Got to hand it to Ralph. He tried to tell stories in animation that didn't patronize to children, using it as an art form instead of a marketing tool.

Instead, Bakshi's work is patronizing to anyone expecting sense, logic, or sound narrative structure. He makes Richard Williams come off as borderline competent in these respects. Good thing people came to their senses and stopped wasting opportunities and work on Bakshi.

@@Dr170 I can't really disagree with any of that. I mean Ralph isn't Martin Scorsese. I'm talking more about the animation itself. Collage, montage, rotoscoping etc. Whether you like it or not, Ralph did exactly what he wanted to do without playing the game so Hollywood studios would give him more money so they can sell merchandise.

@@Dr170 Was Richard Williams not competent?

@@MacEwanMouse Williams is a great animator but a poor storyteller if left to his own devices. Animation for its own sake is pointless.

@@Dr170 I mean, the second part is pure opinion, what did he do storytelling wise that was horrible?

I worked at a videostore before they closed down and Land Before Time series was the highest rented kids movies, blew all of the other movies out of the water and it was decades after it first came out.

Interesting, enjoyed it. Specially putting it into perspective (40 years ago).

Why didn’t they let Ralph Bakshi finish?
@danielnorton98032 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, Ralph didn't have the pedigree that Don and Larry had. He was still considered a controversial animator at the time.

@@danielnorton9803 That’s not right, that’s censorship!
@danielnorton98032 жыл бұрын
@@bluebugaboo3344 It would be censorship if they never let him on in the first place. He just hadn't earned his stripes yet in the animation community. He's respected a lot more now.

I just figured they ran out of time for the broadcast.

Tron meant a lot to me, and I thought the plot was very good. And there were characters and stories I would actually "give a damn" about. I am disappointed that Don and also Larry downplayed the plot of the movie. Makes no sense for Larry to say that since he worked on the movie but that is beyond me. I was 11 years old when I saw it and it inspired me. I think I will watch something with Wendy Carlos or Bob Moog now and feel more inspired than watching these folks chat.

Couldn't agree more. Tron was -and is- mind-blowing.
