People forget: The True purpose of armor isn't to defend against death, it's to mitigate damage that the soul may continue to fight for what they believe is right. If life is what you desire - the price is often life itself. If you desire love - you must allow yourself to toss away your armor and give yourself true courage - without the benefit of a shield or sword.
