***** Mulan takes place in China, based on the Chinese legend of Fa Mulan. The Huns were Eurasian Nomads who invaded China during the Han Dynasty within the film's chronology. Shang's musical number was performed during the boot camp segment, he even kicked Mulan out due to her incompetence [Contrary to what some people may want to believe, it wasn't an issue with Mulan being a woman at the time as it isn't discovered until the later half of the film. As 'Ping', her masculine identity, Mulan was simply incapable of performing the tasks that were asked of her. The final portion shows her adapting and meeting men's expectations.] But what was her motive for going into the army? Within the film, Mulan impersonated an imperial soldier so as to prevent her ailing father from going to war, which would have certainly killed him. And she got that the moment she was discharged from the army. Legally, her family was thus under no obligation to send Mulan's father as the mandatory soldier was already sent. So why did she stay and keep going? Simple. *To prove, for once in her life, she did not suck at something.* She wasn't running away from a problem, she wasn't obsessing over trumping the men in regards to gender expectations; hell, in the very beginning, she *wanted* to meet society's expectations of women with the matchmaker; she simply *sucked* at it despite her good intentions. Mulan's original motive was based upon filial piety, but then evolved to seeking personal growth. This is why I will always see Mulan as a stronger female-protagonist than Elsa from Frozen. While Elsa was independent from men in the sense that she didn't have a romantic connection nor did the typical 'prince save the princess' arc happen, Elsa spent most of her time *running away* from everything. She didn't know how to undo her spell, nor did she try to undo it. She just decided 'fuck it, I'm gonna hide from the problem and push anybody trying to hold me responsible away'. Anna's tenacity did win out in the end, but she was a hopeless romantic, almost a parody of the typical Disney princess, and quite frankly they lucked out when it came to the 'Love is the cure' bit; Elsa's grief over Anna's 'death' was genuine, but she didn't know it would be fixed through that kind of embrace. Honestly, a good chunk of the female empowerment was accidental due to a last second swap of antagonist roles between Elsa and Hans [Disney had realized Elsa hadn't done anything wrong and simply made her the protagonist]. While many feminists love to praise Elsa, Mulan is in my honest opinion the best example of a feminist character; one who grows as a result of her own personal desire and effort, rather than simply evading the problems that came with her life.
