Damn, this is so deep. From what I understand, this girl is in a relationship with this guy (or girl) and they both suffer from depression/mental illness. The partner is slowly getting better and recovering while the singer is still stuck in the same old rut, staying the same. She realizes that this relationship is no longer working, she still loves him/her but they are recovering and she realizes that at this rate she will only drag them back down again. So she tells her lover that they need to break up, that they should move on, though that doesn't necessarily mean forever, just until the singer has gotten better (or well enough that the relationship is no longer toxic). The lover doesn't want to but the singer insists and that's basically what this whole song is about. The fact that the singer is self-aware enough to realize where this relationship is heading and that she is only going to drag her partner down AND let them go in an act of pure selflessness... damn, I have a lotta respect for her. Brings new meaning to the saying, "if you love them let them go." Unfortunately it is true that in real life, at least from what I've read, people in a relationship with differing levels of severity in mental illness(es) do tend to wind up accidentally creating a toxic relationship. That's not to say that it absolutely CAN'T work but... it's difficult, because the one partner is suffering a degree of depression, anxiety, etc. that the other isn't and that can make it difficult for the other partner to understand plus, even if they don't do it purposely, the more mentally ill partner may just drag the other partner down by accident. Like I said, that's not to say that is ALWAYS the case but... it's difficult. Also, I don't know how much this holds true in relationships where one partner is mentally ill and the other isn't or only suffers from very mild mental illness.
