I think the meaning of this song is how quick people are to snatch away the slightest bit of happiness from each other. How bitter, miserable, people envy any idealism and joy others might have, so they bully them, breaking them down, creating more miserable people in a neverending vicious cycle. I have personally experienced this, unfortunately, having been beaten down and verbally lynched for daring be optimistic myself, and now my optimism is gone.
