@@REEEPROGRAM A frankly remarkable group of systems. Look into the "conquests" of India sometime, that wasn't even the UK army or navy proper (at least in full force). Mercenaries, buying off the local leaders or whomever had disliked whoever had been in power at the time, paying the local soldiery more than their countrymen, a whole host of plans, good luck and lots of Money. Both being earned and being spent. Crazy centuries those.

Matilda is aussie slang for a collapseable sleeping tent type thing, typically used by people who move around a lot and/or have to sleep outside (modern day homeless, in older times itinerant workers) Waltzing is just aussie slang for, ya know, travelling places on foot. The song is, as someone before me stated, about either a homeless man or former sheersman (or both, tbh) during the Great Sheersman Strike in the 1890's (which nearly caused an australian civil war before the premiere sent in the army) who poached a sheep due to being very hungry and needing food, and once the sheeps owner (the "squatter", aussie slang for landowner) found him along with some of those aformentioned military, he chose to commite suicide by drowning in a Billabong (aussie slang for small lake) rather than bow to the violance about to be perpotrated against him
