There are multiple types of Nightcore, there is what Lars Praest was raging about (sped up music). Then there is something along the lines of altering the music by enhancing the bass and increasing the pitch of the voice. The balance between the bass and pitch are vital to make a good Nightcore song.

HoukouUkage is so far the closest person that I found to the answer but nightcore use to be a dj duo and they had a huge fight split up and stopped making nightcore music. They where so huge at one point when they stopped and split up everyone just started copying them. Thus nightcore the genre was born :D

mainly, its just sped up, a little base lifts... nightstyle is nightcore and hardstyle... nightload is electro and nightcore... nightstep is nightcore and dubstep... nightcore i don't have an absolute definition, but thats the most common is see on youtube, and what i mainly hear ^.^

"nightcore" is a genre of music that involves artificially speed up tempo and pitch shifting. it was originally made with original music, however now people tend to just up shift the tempo of songs and "re-release" them as nightcore songs.

On the surface, Nightcore can seem that way. But don't worry, it actually takes more time to Nightcore a song than to actually write a song. many Nightcore's have parts where they are slower than the original only to then be faster seconds later. Normally, hours are spent testing what speed is best for each part. this normally goes from 0.90 to 1.15 speed. Then there's the tuning that needs to be done to avoid the chickmonk thing.
