Thank you for posting this. I was there 83-85. I miss it. To this day I'm still trying to mimic the pork bbq on a stick. Something I have no idea how to replicate was the dried, bbq squid. The hot sauce they sprinkled on during and after bbq'ing was amazing.

Back in '72, Magsaysay drive was dirt! But I gotta tell ya, as an 18 year old, a few bottles of San Miguel, a little girl that had just what the dr ordered, and a ride back to the boat (usskittyhawkcva63) with a handful of monkey meat........that was livin'! Thanks for the reminder.

I was Navy back in 70's and the place seems much more diverse business wise now. More family oriented as well. I'm an old man now and no longer drink or chase girls, so the changes don't surprise or make me wish for the old days. All the better for Po town!

I was here in 90-91 when in the military. I live here now. Drastically different. You want to party and do the old things you need to go to Baretto or just take a ride to Angeles City. Other than that Magsaysay Ave and Olongapo in general really only has a nightlife for the locals. Nothing here is really going to impress you anymore when it comes to partying. You might feel nostalgic the first few days of being here but you'll quickly realize this isn't the same Olongapo of years back.

Wow, Olongapo City sure has changed since I was there in ‘82 with 7th Marines. What a great place to have liberty! Considered to be the best liberty by many veterans. The Squids would disable the ship so we’d have to stay there a few more days. Good times.

1987-1989 Sailor here; station dito. Drastically different from those two years I was stationed in the late 1980's. I used to sit on the balcony drinking a San Miguel bottle beer and watch the silly drunken sailors make fools of themselves on the streets late evening into early mornings. The streets then were notorious for nutty jeepney drivers and taxi drivers with no regard to stopping for pedestrians.

Goldilocks! My wife was born there and Tatay and Lolo both worked at the base. Pretty run down when I first went there in 96 but it is a lot nicer today. Lots of good live music in that whole Subic area. FYI our family maintains the Jesus for the resurrection procession. Lolo and Lola have both passed but their son, our uncle still keeps that tradition alive. Few members of our family live there any longer. They live in Pampanga and Metro Manila mostly. Every time we visit we make our way to that area.

@@leeshepherdtrading Was good, a little limited in night life. But if you go to Olongapo City, you will see more. Im a vegan so was focusing on vegan eateries. If you are in Olongpo, visit Dans Helm Bar (Live entertainment music/singing). Great place for the family. Great people working there. Owners the best. Treated like family. Go and visit them.

@@leeshepherdtrading Was a little limited near SM downdown, but I was looking for vegan eateries. Olongapo City would be better. There is a bar called Dans Helm in Olongapo, not far from SM Downtown (near the police station). Great place, people owners. Treat you like family. Live bands, great for the family. You will love it.
@leeshepherdtrading9 ай бұрын
@@ovacik1 Sounds for me. I love a live band and a more personal cosy experience. I’ve been to Makati twice before but due to cash limitations I’m looking for somewhere more value for money.

@@leeshepherdtrading Olongapo is the place, decent price, great bar, live music, fantastic people working there as well as the owners. Family ordinated, but loud. I usually stay in the Kong Hotel, 5mins walk to the bar, 10 ish to SM Downtown, also a coffee shop, Macdonalds & Jolliybees near by. Or you can go round the corner and get cheap food, kinda bars roun d the back of Kong Hotel.

We were there in the USMC in 1984 when Marcos was about to be toppled and flee to Hawaii. Our radio unit, based in Okinawa, was doing an exercise at Cubi Point NAS. There were guards at the doors of each club with submachine guns locked & cocked. We were undeterred. Beer was $.20 per bottle of excellent San Miguel lager. Joints were $.25, and so on.

Last time there 2008, went with a phillipino family street kid came up dirty in the day, joked at pizza place I would give 5$ to anyone to give him a bath, they did, so me and my phil ipino family friend took him shopping new clothes and he wanted swim goggles, they told us the parents would sell them,said Ya but today is his day.

Yea there's nobody making money there anymore. Looks like too many businesses and not enough customers with money to me. You invest there and you might as well throw your money in the garbage. All the foreign gang money has left the country. The Gordon family has lost all their influence and their their pay to play partners around Asia have taken their money elsewhere. Just a matter of time before this place dries up once and for all.
