I was so lucky to have a teacher like that. Mr Stanley Deen cared so much for all of his students. I was fortunate enough to find him later in life to do the same and tell him how much he helped me and inspired me. He passed a few years ago. When my youngest son was born I named him after Mr Deen. If you don't like the idea of a train derailment then move. There's entirely too many rules and regulations governing train maintenance and manner in which a train is to be operated. Nobody forced anybody to stay and live near a railroad track. Nobody forced anybody to be home during the hours when trains travel through my town. Wait till you get a body count of over 500 or 1,000 per crash till you go adding regulations. Besides it's not like it's an important state or something.

My experience as a volunteer reading coach in an elementary school showed me that students crave positive attention from adults. Even students that I wasn't meeting with would clamor to tell me about what they were doing and their achievements. A simple thank you for delivering a message would make them smile, and any small compliment would make them beam. Never discount the value of positive reinforcement from adults on our youth.

Planes, trains, and trucking was almost entirely deregulated by 1980. Compare how many transportation companies exist now versus before that. Today, there are only four freight train companies in the US. Rail maintenance and infrastructure building takes about 30 years to pay off and no CEO would do that and keep his job. So lines have been closed, crews reduced, maintenance minimized, and only non-time sensitive, bulk cargo is accepted making trains longer and cheaper to run for fast profit. And dangerous. Another result is laughing stock Amtrak, but not really their fault. The law says passenger trains have the right-of-way, but the freight trains are now too long to fit on a siding to allow Amtrak to pass by. Freight trains do not run on a schedule. Crews are on stand-by 24-7 for weeks and are called in only when a full train can be dispatched, so there's no way for Amtrak to keep an actual schedule and is a joke to the rest of the world. Fact, in 1890 an American could travel reliably by train to nearly every town in the US and not worry about air turbulence. Much as I hate Congress, only they have the power to fix these problems.

You don't go to college just to get a job. You go to educate your mind and learn what's going on in the systems around you. Anyone can get a job, even a child, but not everyone can LEARN. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

I'm glad to see that companies are headed toward relaxing the requirements for a college degree. I retired from the largest communication company in America. No college degree. The pay and training they gave us that enabled us to do those jobs was amazing. Not to mention we had job protection thru the union. At age 75 I thank God for having.worked for that company.

These hiring practices are so smart, I'm a person in long term recovery who has worked with addicts on a voluntary basis for years. I also have extensive job history in jobs where i stayed for years earning certifications that college grads cannot get. I now work in a job where I help other addicts get clean and learn how to stay clean. That experience is priceless, and you can't get that in school, only the school of life.

It works both ways. The final “feel good” piece came as I was just repairing the back of a framed note from an 11-year-old Bronx boy from the time I was his camp counselor at the age of 15. I have hung this on the wall of every city in which I’ve lived around the world until these 60 years later. It simply says “Dear ****: Thank you so much for trusting me to make the popcorn. Your friend, ****”
@janetnorton6598

Now that's a GREAT note. Simple, concise, and heartfelt. The child had probably been told he was useless and stupid his entire life. Then, you told him otherwise simply by trusting him to make the popcorn.

10:27 Before about 2000, no degree required was the norm. If you were a college graduate, then similar to the military, you went straight to the top. A degree simply meant you had something extra required to manage others in a corporate position. But then HR department across the board started requiring not only college degrees, but high GPAs from "Tier 1 universities" and even SAT scores for entry level jobs, where they were completely unnecessary. In other words, the market was so flooded with college graduates that it very quickly became no advantage whatsoever, especially when paired with the massive debt to get those underpaid, overworked positions. Fast forward twenty years and we are going to be headed back to the good old days where people are questioning if a degree provides even a slight advantage, and the question is no unless of course you want to be an engineer, doctor, lawyer, or other field which demands it as a necessity. The fact is, you don't need a degree to push paper. The people who are to blame for this mess are HR professionals who required inflated qualifications to do jobs for which college education in no way prepares people for.
@ErickTiki

Most HR departments and workers have NO idea what is required to do the job they are trying to fill....they just pick people who have buzz words on paper not people who have the experience and knowlege.
@JohnOhkumaThiel
@JohnOhkumaThiel Жыл бұрын
@@ErickTiki : Not even that anymore. The computer screen the resumes. It used to be extremely easy, especially as a college graduate, to get a job at any company of your choosing by simply handing a resume to HR. In fact, before 9/11 you could simply ask where the HR office is, go in, talk to a person, be sent on a few interviews, and have a job within a week or two someplace you actually wanted to work.

I want the teachers to know, you may feel unappreciated and like you dont make an imapct. But you do, even if its for one child, you do! I grew up in a small country town, im Hispanic. Well in highschool I dyed my hair blonde. One of my favorite teachers stopped me in the hallway after class and asked "why do you want to be like them?" On the outside I know it would sound strange, but given our interactions throughout my schooling, I really felt that she meant I was beautiful in my own way and I shouldn't care what others think. I will always remember Mrs. Sparks. 😥 (Yes that was her last name)
