@@dansprague2 Blue Mountain in Ontario must be beautiful with the Bay. West Coast skiing is different. It's not necessarily more difficult, given the amount of ice in the East. In general, trails are rated in relation to the other trails on the mountain. There is no objective standard applied from resort to resort. That being said, the mountains are higher in the Rockies than they are in the Appalachians and, correspondingly, the slopes can be steeper. The terrain is also different, with rock faces, bowls, couloirs, etc. There are any number of very tough trails in the East and you may have to factor in icier conditions. Still skeptical? Just google Tuckerman’s Ravine.
@notreubensandwich3 жыл бұрын
This would be a blue in my local ski resort on Van Island. The entry to double black runs are way steeper, narrow and you start with a free fall and then head straight into the tress. I knew that the ratings are mountain-specific but never realized it would be so drastic between East Coast
@aztecterp3 жыл бұрын
It's not just East versus West. In New England there are mountains that have very challenging runs. For instance, there's a triple black diamond in Vermont (Smuggler's notch). With respect to mountain specific, at times there is variability within mountains. For instance, at Breckenridge, a Blue run at Peak 6 is steeper than a black run at peak 8 (off the lifts). I think the mountain administrations do their best to keep people safe, and that's why they have the mountain ratings.

What's a double black at one mountain can be a black or even blue at some other mountain, say at Snowbird in Utah. The management of a ski area has to protect its skiers. Otherwise skiers would ski beyond their ability and there'd be lots of injuries. That's it. I appreciate your comment :-)

@@aztecterp Yes, ratings are mountain-specific, but the pitch on nightmare is *much* less than on razors edge or challenge. guys, don't take the slope rating system so seriously. It's not about the steepness of the slope you can ski, coming down from the hardest double black doesn't necessarily prove that you are a good skier (an average intermediate skier can carefully descend from any double black). It's about how you ski.
@aztecterp2 жыл бұрын
This is so true! My skiing down that run is proof. Back then, I was in my early stage of skiing and wanted to show that I could navigate down the run, but I wasn't skiing well. Skiing the way I did, I was off balance. That's how people get hurt. These days, I spend more time working on my skills. I take PSIA clinics, have the CARV system to improve my skiing, and only ski steeper runs when I feel like taking a break from training or when I'm with family or friends who want to do it. Skiing is fun but the goal is to master skills first. It makes skiing sooooo much more fun :-)

Great Video! I looked at all the comments of people saying that this ia a blue and those people don't get that ratings are mountain specific. I feel West-coast skiers always make fun of east-coast skiers for calling runs like these "Double Blacks", but Blue mountain has way harder double blacks like razors edge, challenge, and falls, if these people want to complain about nightmare not being steep enough, then they should just ski some other trails or go somewhere entirely, and not thrashing on mountains that they probably live more than 1,00 miles away. But anyways, Props to you, I would have crazy replying to all the comments explaining to people that ratings are moutain-specific. PS: I just went up to blue mountain and saw these trails called Blue Baumer Glade and Sleepy Hollow Glade but I couldn't find them when I got there, do you know anything about them?

Thanks for the comment. I just came back this morning from skiing Colorado. Everything is mountain specific. People discussed differences in ratings between Colorado mountains. For instance, Loveland is a very difficult mountain to ski. Before hitting the slopes, one individual told me that Loveland is demoralizing because one comes in feeling like a good skier and leaves deflated. He said, blues at Loveland are like blacks at other local resorts, such as Vail. Skiing around Loveland, I agree. Everything is mountain specific. The glades you are looking for are next to Lazy Mile (Blue Baumer glade) and Mainstreet (Sleepy Hallow; left). They may not have been open because of lack of snow. Blue Baumer is especially popular. I’ll add two points to what he replied as well. That's not even a black diamond trail. It's an intermediate or green trail. This guy needs to press his knees forward and make te ski carve instead of sliding. He also needs to keep his shoulders perpendicular to the fall line. He should take some lessons.

As you know, ratings are mountain specific. This run now has lots of features on it. May change soon as we are getting close to the end of the season. As far as your ski tips are concerned, thanks. Are you an instructor? If so, keep up the great work :-)

Pretty much so. Just skiing a couple of years at the time of the video. Some people like me, though, push ourselves to improve. Thus, while one can stay on the bunny slopes their whole lives, I chose to move up. To improve, one must work hard and accept failures. Failure is indeed the key to learning. My failures at that time provided the feedback I needed to improve. Skiing is difficult to learn as a older person as, unlike kids, older folks have lots to worry about. Still, one can't live unless one learns to live :-) By the way, it's a double black but as everyone knows, ratings are mountain specific.

@@aztecterp Ok? Then why’d you call it a black diamond?
@aztecterp2 жыл бұрын
@@sapling6536 didn't you read the last sentence? It is a double black diamond. Ratings differ based on the mountain. Ratings are designed to keep people safe. I see many comments about the rating. I made a video on a run in Snowbird called Bassackwards. It's blue and has one part that's steeper than Nightmare. However, at Snowbird, that run doesn't compare to other runs that are black diamonds, such as Regulator Johnson or Mineral Basin as a whole. It's about safety and providing warnings for skiers. Now, why is Nightmare double black? Well, it generally has features on it or bumps. Thus, the width is halved. When I skied down it on that day, it was devoid of stuff. Hey, I enjoyed discussing this with you. Thank you for your pleasant tone. I get so many people who insult me for not skiing well down that run. Merry Christmas!

It all depends on where you are used to skiing. This year it was a terrain park all year, so this video doesn't represent it too well.

If it was labeled green, there'd be a lot of people hurt. It's not a very difficult black, but it's certainly not a green. Think skier safety

:) That's not even a blue slope in Europe.

Every mountain is different. Ratings are used to protect skiers, not for mountains to compete against one another. This run is generally used for a variety of purposes, including moguls and a terrain park. Thus, it's normally half as wide as it is in this video. Also, it depends on what mountain in Europe. They are not all the same :-)

Why is that? You obviously know absolutely nothing about skiing and the learning process. What you do know, however, is how to make obfuscating and ignorant comment. You must have had great parenting.

As the saying goes, it is what it is. I ski Colorado and Utah regularly, and there are harder blues in some places than double blacks in the Mid-Atlantic. That said, ratings are mountain specific, and they are meant to protect novices.

@aztecterp2 жыл бұрын
@@deadlykilla39 Great! Next step is what we call a wedge Christie. As you turn downhill, you are in a pizza. Make your turn so that you go across the hill, like a J shape. When going across the hill (perpendicular to the fall line), bring your inside ski together with you outside ski. That's how you get parallel. Skiing is awesome!
