There are two things you can be sure of in the world: Death, and West coast skiers making sure everyone knows that Ontario's most difficult runs would only be Blues in the mountains.

@@dansprague2 the mountain are indeed different in the west, especially Colorado and Utah. I've never been to Wyoming but hear that Jackson's Hole is the hardest place to ski in the nation. Nevertheless, you've gotta ski where you can, right? Glen Plake makes a point that any skiing is good skiing. We all dream of back bowls and other cool stuff, but we ski where we can. I hope you are having a great season :-)

@@dansprague2 Blue Mountain in Ontario must be beautiful with the Bay. West Coast skiing is different. It's not necessarily more difficult, given the amount of ice in the East. Pennsylvania has smaller mountains than Vermont. Vermont has some really good skiing, with long runs. Of course the difference is the altitude. By the way, Abasin is my favorite place to ski in Colorado. Utah is awesome too. I love Snowbasin, Snowbird, and Alta :-)

In general, trails are rated in relation to the other trails on the mountain. There is no objective standard applied from resort to resort. That being said, the mountains are higher in the Rockies than they are in the Appalachians and, correspondingly, the slopes can be steeper. The terrain is also different, with rock faces, bowls, couloirs, etc. There are any number of very tough trails in the East and you may have to factor in icier conditions. Still skeptical? Just google Tuckerman’s Ravine.

This would be a blue in my local ski resort on Van Island. The entry to double black runs are way steeper, narrow and you start with a free fall and then head straight into the tress. I knew that the ratings are mountain-specific but never realized it would be so drastic between East Coast
@aztecterp
@aztecterp 3 жыл бұрын
It's not just East versus West. In New England there are mountains that have very challenging runs. For instance, there's a triple black diamond in Vermont (Smuggler's notch). With respect to mountain specific, at times there is variability within mountains. For instance, at Breckenridge, a Blue run at Peak 6 is steeper than a black run at peak 8 (off the lifts). I think the mountain administrations do their best to keep people safe, and that's why they have the mountain ratings.

It is. Now, if you mean that you believe it shouldn't be one, that's different. Is it really hard for you and others to understand that ratings are mountain specific? What's a double black at one mountain can be a black or even blue at some other mountain, say at Snowbird in Utah. The management of a ski area has to protect its skiers. Otherwise skiers would ski beyond their ability and there'd be lots of injuries. That's it. I appreciate your comment :-)
@sohlbergk
@sohlbergk 3 жыл бұрын
@@aztecterp Yes, ratings are mountain-specific, but the pitch on nightmare is *much* less than on razors edge or challenge. I don't think it is even as steep as widow maker, which is single-black-diamond. Sometimes they let the right half of the top section or nightmare get moguls, but I agree with those who say it should not be double-black-diamond. Folks might ski it, get a false sense of ability and get into trouble on the steeper runs.
@aztecterp
@aztecterp 3 жыл бұрын
@@sohlbergk I agree. Now, though, it's a terrain park with nice jumps and lots of features. My guess is it's rating is for the moguls that usually populate the top right side. This year, no moguls, only features.

@@aztecterp wait, so you have to translate the ratings in every ski resort? I dont get it. Ok, if it is double black or single black, is not that big of a difference, but if a double black can be blue... that is stange. Normally, the black runs are a lot steeper than blue ones. up to 42 %...so what are you talking about.
@aztecterp
@aztecterp 3 жыл бұрын
@@colasalz2 it's true. For instance, Mineral Basin in Snowbird has single Black Diamond and Blue trails that are steep as heck. In fact, there's a trail Big Emma that I is Blue up top, and green from the middle to the bottom. That trail would be a Black Diamond in other resorts. The ratings are to protect the skiers more than to placate egos :-)

guys, don't take the slope rating system so seriously. It's not about the steepness of the slope you can ski, coming down from the hardest double black doesn't necessarily prove that you are a good skier (an average intermediate skier can carefully descend from any double black). It's about how you ski.
@aztecterp
@aztecterp 2 жыл бұрын
This is so true! My skiing down that run is proof. Back then, I was in my early stage of skiing and wanted to show that I could navigate down the run, but I wasn't skiing well. Skiing the way I did, I was off balance. That's how people get hurt. These days, I spend more time working on my skills. I take PSIA clinics, have the CARV system to improve my skiing, and only ski steeper runs when I feel like taking a break from training or when I'm with family or friends who want to do it. Skiing is fun but the goal is to master skills first. It makes skiing sooooo much more fun :-)

Great Video! I looked at all the comments of people saying that this ia a blue and those people don't get that ratings are mountain specific. I feel West-coast skiers always make fun of east-coast skiers for calling runs like these "Double Blacks", but Blue mountain has way harder double blacks like razors edge, challenge, and falls, if these people want to complain about nightmare not being steep enough, then they should just ski some other trails or go somewhere entirely, and not thrashing on mountains that they probably live more than 1,00 miles away. But anyways, Props to you, I would have crazy replying to all the comments explaining to people that ratings are moutain-specific. PS: I just went up to blue mountain and saw these trails called Blue Baumer Glade and Sleepy Hollow Glade but I couldn't find them when I got there, do you know anything about them?
@aztecterp
@aztecterp Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I just came back this morning from skiing Colorado. Everything is mountain specific. People discussed differences in ratings between Colorado mountains. For instance, Loveland is a very difficult mountain to ski. Before hitting the slopes, one individual told me that Loveland is demoralizing because one comes in feeling like a good skier and leaves deflated. He said, blues at Loveland are like blacks at other local resorts, such as Vail. Skiing around Loveland, I agree. Everything is mountain specific. The glades you are looking for are next to Lazy Mile (Blue Baumer glade) and Mainstreet (Sleepy Hallow; left). They may not have been open because of lack of snow. Blue Baumer is especially popular. Thanks for the comments :-)

My guess is that it was labeled black for various reasons. First, it's next to two steep runs, including a race hill. Second, the steeper part is generally filled with moguls or large jumps. Third, despite being less steep than the two neighboring runs, it's a steeper run. There's a green trail next door, Paradise, and people can enter the trail from Paradise, avoiding the steepest part. I’ll add two points to what he replied as well. First, it’s really hard to gage steepness on video because cameras are generally parallel to the slope, and white snow makes shadows and depth hard to see. Secondly, idk if you’ve been to blue mountain before, but it is ICY a lot of the time. I’ve never skied out west before so I can’t fully compare the two, but thought that’s worth calling out.

I've seen a lot of videos of Corbet's Couloir and it's awesome looking. I'm too old to do that, having started skiing late and having back issues. Still, nobody is trying to compare this run to Corbet's. Question. Do you think when one posts videos that one shouldn't post the name and rating of a trail? That's a rhetorical question of course. The answer of course is no. At any rate, thanks for the comment.

Not really. It depends on the ski area. The idea is to protect skiers. This run would not be Black in many places in Vermont, Utah, or Colorado, for instance. It's not a double black diamond because of pitch. It has this rating because it's used for moguls or has features. On that day, it had nothing.

It's not about Europe or North America. For example, in BC Canada this would be a Blue run. However in Ontario Canada this is a Black run. It depends on each province or state.

It's not a very difficult run for a good skier. However, it has a very nice set of hard turns which, if there's nobody there, you can have some fun on. It turns into a blue run after the two turns (Dream Weaver). Dream Weaver can get icy but it's a nice run. Later in the winter, Dream Weaver turns into a ski/boarder cross run, with lots of fun stuff :-)

Pretty much so. Just skiing a couple of years at the time of the video. Some people like me, though, push ourselves to improve. Thus, while one can stay on the bunny slopes their whole lives, I chose to move up. To improve, one must work hard and accept failures. Failure is indeed the key to learning. My failures at that time provided the feedback I needed to improve. Skiing is difficult to learn as a older person as, unlike kids, older folks have lots to worry about. Still, one can't live unless one learns to live :-) By the way, it's a double black but as everyone knows, ratings are mountain specific.

@@aztecterp Ok? Then why’d you call it a black diamond?
@aztecterp
@aztecterp 2 жыл бұрын
@@sapling6536 didn't you read the last sentence? It is a double black diamond. Ratings differ based on the mountain. Ratings are designed to keep people safe. I see many comments about the rating. I made a video on a run in Snowbird called Bassackwards. It's blue and has one part that's steeper than Nightmare. However, at Snowbird, that run doesn't compare to other runs that are black diamonds, such as Regulator Johnson or Mineral Basin as a whole. It's about safety and providing warnings for skiers. Now, why is Nightmare double black? Well, it generally has features on it or bumps. Thus, the width is halved. When I skied down it on that day, it was devoid of stuff. Hey, I enjoyed discussing this with you. Thank you for your pleasant tone. I get so many people who insult me for not skiing well down that run. Merry Christmas!

Every mountain is different. Ratings are used to protect skiers, not for mountains to compete against one another. This run is generally used for a variety of purposes, including moguls and a terrain park. Thus, it's normally half as wide as it is in this video. Also, it depends on what mountain in Europe. They are not all the same :-)

When going across the hill (perpendicular to the fall line), bring your inside ski together with you outside ski. That's how you get parallel. Skiing is awesome!
