Renters insurance only covers belongings. Everything else the property owners cover. Including relocation costs while the building is made habitable, or release them from leases and return ALL money. This place is under rent control, and the Dept of Housing has strict habitability laws.

In Michigan renters insurance only pays for loss of personal property, the landlord is 100% responsible for the property damage!

Not true, depending on your policy since not all of them are the same but lodging is usually covered under renter’s insurance. The trick is, your apartment must be deemed inhabitable by the city, if not - like in this case - you’re basically on your own.

All tenants are required to carry "RENTER'S INSURANCE" not rentals, just like on your cars. "their stuff" is NOT landlord's responsibilities nor their liabilities. You get your stuff ruined inside your car, it's YOUR responsibility, NOT the automakers nor the dealers'.

The city should cite that and lead the charge. In El Monte was sold our apt. building but the new owner didn't do any maintenance. We held a 2nd. on the bldg. and the city threatened to put everyone up in motels and lay a charge against the bldg. We got the bldg. back and did all the upgrades.

Correct. The city can cite and lay motel charges against the bldg. We had that threatened in El MOnte when the apt. bldg. we sold wasn't maintained by the new owner. We got the bldg. back and did the upgrades, as we held a 2nd. so liability was ours as well.

The fact that the owners and mgmt company have allowed the building to be in such disrepair that the storm could cause catastrophic damage is completely irresponsible. The fact that they are taking so long to repair the units to an inhabitable state, while not accommodating their tenants, is just reckless and inhumane. I hope, for the tenants sake, that the building and all the units are repaired asap and that the tenants are compensated for their stress, property loss, health issues due to the hazardous conditions and neglect on the part of the owners.

Come over here to pepperwood village condominiums off Vanowen. One unit is slowly sinking into the earth (foundation is being completely redone and residents have been moved). Our unit has 12K of structural damage from poor piping and the upstairs neighbor running his air conditioner incessantly. Neighbors are finding poor piping in their units as well.

this 1989 build (with no maintenance) might mean the fan coils are failing (or were installed backward) and the copper piping soldering is failing. it's been 34 years, which is about right.

The landlord pays for moving trucks, storage units, hotel rooms for tennants until the remodeling is complete. Then they come and check you out of the hotel , pay off your storage units , pay for moving trucks and move you back in. All paid by the land owner. Cough up Skippy .

We owned a apt. bldg. we built and you have no idea how much power cities have to burn you We had a 2nd. and El Monte threatened to put up all into motels as the new (overseas) owner did no maintenance.
