They don't want to have to compete against a memory, because that is a fight they will never be able to win. So they figure if they can get rid of all the physical reminders of the memory, that the memory will just fade away. Sort of a "I win by default" type thing.

I hate how it's a common occurrence in these Reddit stories of how the step family members do their best to wipe out any trace of the step child's parent that has died. Why is any living person thinking that a dead person is their competition? First of all those things can't really be replaced because it's truly one of a kind. Sometimes there are stepparents that really try to be a replacement for the bio parent they hate and other times they just hate them. I really think these people are the absolute worst who do these things. What any step parent should realize, how would they like it if any trace of their family was erased? The stepmother and her stupid relatives in this story should have known this would even happen and if they think anything of what I said in the comment.

I totally agree with you. I prefer the step parents and step families who nurture, encourage and protect their spouses love for their late spouses and try their best to be the glue to hold that family together while that family recovers from the loss long enough for them to move on and enjoy their newest family members
