A good way to prevent the pre shading from desaturating the base color. Is to substitute the black with a very dark blue or brown. And substitute the white with a pale yellow or tan.

I don't know if this is a weird idea, but something I've been experimenting with is using different colors like oranges reds and yellows as zenithal highlights to see how it changes the tone and vibrancy of the basecoat-so that might be something you could consider trying

You sir have saved my sanity. I have struggled for long periods of time getting my figures to at least an "acceptable" range for my diorama. This style of painting I saw you do before this video but have since adopted it and what a difference. I can fully understand what "for my purposes" means when you say it as that's exactly where I was stuck or hung up spending way to much time on just 1 figure causing many a diorama to yet be completed. Thank you! thank you! thank you! You are my favorite KZbinr modeling channel. I owe you a cold one and if ever we get the chance to meet you'll know it's me as I'll be the guy offering my hand and holding out a cold beer in the other.

You could try using red/red-orange transparent glase in the nose cheeks area as the skin there is thinner than let's say the chin. And so the blood vessels are more visible there and as a result, the area is more reddish. Just a fine art tip that makes people look more alive. It works with fine art so maybe it will work here as well.

Since I discovered your channel last November, I’m back to modelling: Tamiya and all the quick drying glues and paints, etc. I love it. I’ve built 5 WW2 planes and working on my first tank! The weathering was the hardest, but now I’m developing a method and it’s getting better and more realistic, thanks to your advice. Once again, thanks for all you do. I am in awe of your techniques. I’m always looking forward to your videos.

Something I do with my figures, American, British some German and so on. I use your tank cast armor texture technique with the filler and extra thin. I use short stiff bristled brush and add the texturing! you wouldn’t think it adds much, but it really does! Most of their helmets were textured in real life with sand, sawdust, cork gowned up gravel. it’s a great little detail adds a lot to the figure! Also when I do hair, mustaches, beard or the head, I paint the hair base color and use white, blue, (blue/ white on black hair I also add some dark brown in there too) (yellow, red, light brown if it’s blond hair) read heads get ( yellow, white, orange) I don’t do a whole lot of it, but enough to brake up the hair. I look at comic books and paintings to see how artist are doing it. it adds a lot to the hair! instead of this lifeless one color look. I take as much time with the hair as I do with the folds on their pants or jackets or their face, even if it’s going to get mostly covered it’s another great detail!

Any chance on the chap with a cane.... You paint on his shoulder eplileps a little gold diamond with a crown on top? It would designate him as a Lieutenant colonel.. (in British army its pronounced leff-tenant cur-nel). With that moustache and cane he looks fairly high up and seems like the type of officer who would enjoy inspecting the aftermath of his soldiers taking out a tank to boost morale!

Hello Uncle Martin! I have a challenge for you! If you accept it, you may create something new and unique (I've never seen one before). Do a diorama depicting a scene from either world war. Paint the ENTIRE diorama in shades of gray, so it looks like a B&W photo! Suggestion: An He-111 down in an English field (with a stone wall running through it, and maybe a sheep or two standing nearby), with a lone Tommy guarding the downed aircraft, or also have a couple of RAF officers checking out the wreck. Or, whatever! What do you think? What do others think of this idea? Has anyone ever seen such a diorama?

Uncle Night Shift! I wanted to thank you as I have learned something truly valuable from your excellent videos - you see, I am a oilpainter (paintings and stuff) and what has been driving me crazy during the past few years is, that why oh why does the paint have to be glossy, shiny?!? Can't see a thing from that specular highlighting going on, especially with the darker shades. I am aware that there are varnishes for that, but that should be applied like a year after completing the thing, as it takes that long for the oilpaint to dry completely. But then I saw you using the Cardboard-method, and thought to myself, hey, that could actually work. And it did! Now they don't shine at all, although they don't seem to blend with each other as well, but it is much better this way :)

Thank you for your video, enjoyable to watch, great opportunity to learn from. 👍🏻 Two questions. The glaze dilution ratio is approx. 1:10. What is your dilution ratio for highlights? I know it’s hard to define and it may vary depending on the type of paint you use but what’s your rough guess for Vallejo paints? When you paint e.g. highlights you “blend” boundaries between a highlighted area and a non-highlighted area by using a stippling motion of the brush? If you don’t how do you do it? Sorry about the “noob” questions but I have just started experimenting with figure painting.
