I would describe the 3 singers as follows. Tarja is magnificent with a voice like a Siren. It is almost supernatural that her big, powerful voice comes out of such a little body. Annette is like a Pixie. She is a world-class singer & is easily an equal to pop stars like Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga. Floor is majestic. She looks & sounds like a Valkyrie. Her voice can touch people's souls when she sings & with just a gesture, she can command a crowd of 100K people to follow along. The difference between the 3 ladies singing is just a matter of flavor, not quality.

Annette is a world class singer and her studio recordings are incredibly well done. I cannot pass judgment too much on her live singing because a) never saw her live, and b) there are very few (if any) professionally recorded songs with Annette as lead.

@@jonathanlocke6404 you are correct. She has a wonderful voice. NW is very much a live band and her issues always developed while on tour. On the DPP tour, she was fine when I saw NW in Atlanta (one of the very first shows of the USA tour). But then fell ill a few shows later. Then on the follow up tour, again I saw them in Atlanta and she was fine. Then a short time later she fell ill again and the rest is history.

Anette probably doesn’t get the respect she deserves. She doesn’t quite have the same stage presence and live performance ability, but is is a very good singer, and sang on 2 of Nightwish’s 3 most successful albums. Tuomas wanted someone totally different from Tarja, not a replacement of her. You didn’t think Tuomas would have chosen her if she wasn’t good, did you? Now he has a singer that can sing anything from any era.

Tarja 1996-2005, Anette 2007-2012, Floor 2012 to present. The video is based on the 1903 Finnish painting , The Wounded Angel, by Hugo Simberg. Anette has more of a pop/rock style. Tuomas wanted a singer totally different when she was chosen. This song was the first single on the Dark Passion Play album in 2007, the first of 2 with her. She was great in studio, but there aren't many good live videos with her. One of the few good lives with her is Slow Love Slow at Montreux 2012.

Anette's work since Nightwish in her new band 'Dark Element' - are better than most of the rest of the pop and rock world. She is a true world class singer and performer. But she is also a nurse, besides her singing career - that might be the reason why she doesn't do world tours - her talent and skills are certainly there. Anette was fired due to the different - let's call it mindsets - in Nightwish. The chemistry wasn't simply there - and then it had to end. Luckily both Anette, Nightwish and Floor - and the rest of the world! gained from this split-up.

Why Anette left the band: during a nearly year-long world tour, Anette became pregnant with her 3rd child. She made an agreement w the band that, should she be unable to continue, a sub would be brought in. Unexpectedly she fell very ill and had to be hospitalized. She went back on her agreement and was demanding shows be postponed. Obviously, there were other personal issues we'll never really know, but also, while a great stage presence, her live voice wasn't strong enough for much of their back catalog...and, they could not postpone tour dates. Tuomas let her go immediately. Floor was flown in 48hrs later to pick up the pieces...and never left!

Good morning from Athens Debbie! I wanted to share with you something beautiful about the song, that most people don't know. I will sound like the 'father' on 'my big, fat, Greek wedding' about Greek language 😅 but what can I do? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂 So 'Amaranth' is a flower as you said and it comes from the Greek name of the flower 'amarantos (Αμάραντος)' which means unfading. We usually have a bouquet of those at home because of this incredible ability. It's really amazing how Tuomas is searching every detail about his songwriting. He didn't just pick this flower by luck. He searched for the meaning of the name so it fits perfectly with the message he wanted to share with us. In my heart he is one of the greatest songwriters ever lived, because of the amount of passion, love and thought he puts in his creations. Another beautiful morning coffee with your video... Thank you ☺️ Greetings from Greece 🤘🇬🇷

Tarja 1996 - 2005 - Ended badly. Master, Passion, Greed tells the story from Marko's point of view. Annette 2005 - 2012 - Ended with Annette being unable to perform due to flu, but there were deeper issues and this was the final nail in the proverbial coffin Floor 2012 to Present - Since joining the band, she has grown into her role and is the voice that I personally think bridges the classical / metal divide best.

You're right...Anette does have a great voice. It's too bad that she doesn't get as much respect as Tarja & Floor get. Perhaps it's because she lacked the ability to perform the operatic songs from Nightwish's back catalogue? I'm not sure, but at least she landed on her feet after being released from Nightwish with her solo career and her band The Dark Element. She also worked with Russell Allen (of Symphony X...another great band) in their Allen/Olzon band. Anette also sang on Ultima Grace's one and only albums (so far?), but I have not heard that one. Anyways, a great song (IMO) that is one of Nightwish's most popular on KZbin. Very catchy chorus, that's for sure! Cheers!

How do they get the giant noise? Amplification. Opera singers can fill a large hall without amplification. It would be a generalisation of course, but I have rarely seen a petite opera singer (in fact I'm not sure I can think of one in my 40+ years of opera-going). Anette has a great voice in the studio and shou LL d not be ignored. There are some live performances of Amarant with Anette that are also very good. More Anette please: Slow Love Slow live from Montreux 2012 Eva - studio version Cadence of Her Last Breath - studio Meadows of Heaven - studio 1996-2005 - Tarja May 2007-Sep 2012 - Anette Oct 2012-now - Floor For The Poet and the Pendulum I think with the effect some Nightwish has on you, you may need a stiff drink handy and a whole box of pencils.

Hi Debbie. Just wanted to point out that you already reacted to the interview with Floor where she explains that the reason she got the call from Nightwish in 2012 was because Anette was pregnant. She is an exceptional singer but she also limited Tuomas in his writing capacity. Her "pop" style vocals didn't really do justice for the way he really wanted to write, but what he did write, for her sound, made her shine. Can I make a suggestion since you got into knowing Floor on a more personal level? It's not an interview, but she actually did an analysis on her performance of Ghost Love Score at Wacken 2013 that I'm sure you're going to love. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4jCZHlnbZuSa7M Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Dear Debbie, thank for this nice first reaction to Annette. Amaranth is a nice little tune, but by far not the best song in the Annette era, but I'm sure you will get to those at some point. Since you are preparing for The Poet and The Pendulum, I think it is important to learn about the timeline, the events and the players involved. I am not going to spoil too much, but in 2005 Tuomas and the rest of the band decided to fire Tarja, the original singer and co-founder of the band, due to personal issues. You will learn about that when you read the letters. Many say the song is about that, but it actually isn't. The Poet and The Pendulum is about the aftermath of that event. Nightwish fans loved Tarja. She was the frontwoman of the band, she was unique in the metal world for her singing style. Many thought the way how Tuomas handled it was very wrong, and most fans and media blamed him alone for that. In particular in Finland, where the fans and are very proud of Nightwish, Tuomas was roasted by fans and media. At the same time, Tuomas felt he had lost his muse, his friend and the person that defined Nightwish in a way, so he saw his entire musical work falling apart. He fell in a deep depression and was close to end his career in music and to end Nightwish as a band. Some say he was close to end his life, although he denied that in interviews. But he said he had to write that song and that album, so he could die in his music and didn't have to die in the real world. The Poet and The Pendulum is essentially a mirror of the phases of his depression, but at the same time a psychological catharsis that allowed him to move on. In a way it is one of the most important songs of Nightwish. Without this song we probably would not have this band and the wonderful music that came after 2005 anymore.

This in my opinion is Anette's best song. Great in the studio, not enough power and volume live. Now go to Wacken and watch Floor have 82K going bonkers singing along.

One of my favourites from Annete's time with Nightwish is Meadows Of Heaven. A wonderful ballad. I'm sure you'd love it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKnWm6lsgdmFsJI There also an Instrumental version. And an orchestral version. All 3 versions are excellent

I have been a fan of NW since the late 90's. I enjoy the albums she sang on. Annette was not able to sustain a full length tour. She seemed to fall ill on each tour. That was her downfall. Now NW has the perfect singer for their music.

yeah kiddo Tarja was the original singer then after 2005 it was Annette, then in the middle of their tour in 2012 I believe because of her pregnancy (not sure) she became unable to continue which was when they contacted Floor. If you get a chance watch "48 hours to learn their setlist" (it's 2 hours long I believe) and it's all covered in that documentary.

@The Question Queens: Aah, now you're getting to Annette. Vocally, while talented, I find her to not be a good fit for Nightwish. Even then, Tuomas still managed to crank out Imaginarium, Nightwish's most popular album. That being said, my two favorite songs with Annette in the lead are Meadows of Heaven, which Annette has a very soulful, almost Gospel feel to her vocals in that song; and Scaretale, a Halloween-inspired song that gives me "Something Wicked This Way Comes" vibes. All I can say is, as compositional storyteller, Tuomas is a helluva talent. Once again, there is a bloody good reason why I and others call him our "Metal Mozart."

Lovely reaction. Annette is a great singer and I love how her voice has matured over the years, adding more depth and resonance. I love her work with Dark Element (Songs the Night Sings, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl7Zqppri9uaaas) and her collaboration with Russell Allen of Symphony X (All Alone, kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpDdYaV5ftuNoLc). My other favorite Nightwish songs with Annette are Meadows of Heaven and The Crow, The Owl, and The Dove. For The last one their label had a contest for fan made video to go with the song and the winner is just hautingly beautiful, kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6q8ZoSDm5lkms0. Best live performance by Annette is Slow Love Slow live from Montreaux. As part of your research for Poet and the Pendulum, not only read the open letters from the band and Tarja but I would recommend reading a lyric analysis of the song by the artist Annika Hausen. Best analysis of the lyrics I have ever read. I would provide a link but every time I do my comment gets blocked by YT so just google her name and Poet and the Pendulum.

Annette sometimes gets a very undeserved bumrap because her voice just wasn't able to fill out the big songs like Ghost Love Score or Romanticide - especially live. When you hear the songs that were written with her voice and sound in mind, she absolutely shines. In fact, I saw a video where Floor sings this song, and I really do prefer Annette's version. She truly is an amazing singer

Anette’s studio work with Nightwish was fantastic…live was another story. She wasn’t comfortable with a lot of the Tarja-era songs due to how operatic they were so they either sounded odd live, or they just stopped performing some of them. I think touring was rough on her, too…she seemed to be ill frequently. The last straw was when the band told her they were going to ask Floor to fill in for her when she got sick in the middle of a tour and she said no…she was afraid if they got Floor to fill in, she’d lose her job. She lost her job anyway, but not because of Floor. There’s a great documentary called “Please Learn the Set List in 48 Hours” (available on KZbin) that documents how the band came to part ways with Anette and how Floor came onboard. As far as The Poet and the Pendulum, people make a big deal ( too much, I think) over the open letters…all you really need to know: the band fired Tarja due to her acting like a diva, Tuomas was depressed by that, and when a lot of fans turned on him for it, he was even more depressed. The song was his way of dealing with the pain and the depression; it was his catharsis…his way of getting it all out.

I really loved the two albums that Anette recorded with the band, but her voice was a tad thin in comparison to Tarja. The 2012 debacle when Tuomas had to call Floor to replace her half-way through the tour, left another regrettable chapter in the band' history, but my very first exposure to NW was 'Storytime' which I thought was great. I wish her all the best tbh. x

This video takes me back. There was a huge backlash from the "fans" because Anette (only one 'n') wasn't Tarja and has such a different style of signing. That was intentional on the part of Nightwish as they didn't want Tarja 2.0, they specifically wanted something different. I can understand the fans not wanting something different and/or not liking Anette's voice - not everyone will like everything - but a lot of the comments from that time went too far and there was no end to the pointless fighting. I saw Nightwish with Anette a week before she and the band parted ways. She was great live; big personality, lots of charisma, lots of crowd engagement. She's also taller than she looks. She still sings, too. Her recent solo album and her two collaboration albums with Russell Allen (mainly of Symphony X, but he also sings with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Ayreon/Star One) are pretty good. When she's not singing, she's a full time nurse and has three or four kids. The reaction channel The Charismatic Voice has an interesting interview with Anette and Russell if you'd like to see more of her.

Annette’s great in the studio recordings and a world class singer in her own rights, but I always felt she wasn’t the best fit for Nightwish. That being said, some of the best songs in the Nightwish discography were written during her tenure as lead singer and there’s a lot to love here still. Amaranth in particular has one of the best melody lines I’ve ever heard and I love it so much.

Anette was a little hit-or- miss live but her studio work was and is awesome. She sang a teaser for "Amaranth" live and "a capella" on a German TV interview and was perfect! (plus she was kinda the "rebound chick" for Nightwish, I think, so......) "Slow, Love, Slow" at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in 2012 was great! She is also good with Brother Firetribe - "Heart Full of Fire" live at the Apollo - and there is certain man with a purple guitar playing too! link - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2rVm6yXl6eSY6M

Annette got a bit of a rough reception from a lot of Nightwish fans as she sounded so different to Tarja (who was the original singer and has still appeared on the most Nightwish albums), but she has a very nice voice and really shines on certain songs. Floor came to fill in for Annette on tour (who had the flu and was pregnant so was going to miss some tours anyway) but the band ended up parting ways with Annette due to conflicts/arguments in the band and Floor fitted in so well that they ended up asking her to stay full time.

Annette left became she was becoming difficult to work with. In truth once Tuomas recovered from the trauma of the Tarja backlash, he realized she just wasn’t up to Nightwish standard in a live settling. She got pregnant and agreed to a temporary replacement so long as it wasn’t Floor, because “the fans would like her too much”. So they replaced her abruptly at the first opportunity.

Annette has a great voice on the studio albums. Not so great as Tarja or Floor live though, and as you’re finding out, Nightwish live is phenomenal. I think others have said to check out Floor’s version of this from Wacken. Bearing in mind this was the first time most of the crowd had seen Floor fronting Nightwish, she has them mesmerised and completely under her control. Watch Thomas’s reaction from the keyboards. Even he couldn’t believe what was happening
