Lyrics by Tuomas the keyboardist, the main songwriter, both music and lyrics. The song wasn't a good fit for Marko's band Tarot, so Tuomas thought it could be a Nightwish song. Here you can also see Marko's sense of humour when he talks to the crowd, in Finnish. To see the whole translation click closed captions. Marko also plays the guitar (part of "The Beast", you'll see) in this performance. An coustic sounding electric guitar. The '6th memeber' of Nightwish, Troy, the multi-instrumentalist from England, plays an instrument you seldom hear in metal music, even in symphonic metal. Most people can't name the instrument, can you? If you want to analyze Marko's 'traditional' rock voice I suggest Nightwish - HIGH HOPES Helsinki 2005, the same concert you just reacted to. Marko on vocals, Tarja backstage for an attire change. (I think she had four different outfits. Yellow, red, black and white, always with a matching colour mic.) It's a Pink Floyd cover or rather a tribute. Recommending Nightwish with Marco doing lead vocals is of course the obvious choice for people who want to experience his vocals, but if you really want to look into his singing, then surely the best choice is his band *Tarot* . *Tides* and *Pyre of Gods* are songs I'd recommend for a start.

Actually this song is all Marko. Yes, Tuomas is the genius behind nearly all of the Nightwish songs but not this one. Marko at this point has also left Nightwish, and he and Tarja actually have remained friends and tour together frequently! She was featured on one of his recent songs called Left on Mars, it’s really great. Another great Marko classic I’d recommend is The Islander from Nightwish-very different tone from this song, but gorgeous! What’s even more impressive to know is that he’s singing like this AFTER having to retrain his entire upper range due to a botched throat surgery. For Tarja, I believe the type of classical singing she’s trained in is called German Lied singing! She’s a true icon of the symphonic metal genre and has inspired so many younger singers, like Simone Simons, to pursue classical training. She also has a wonderful solo career now and puts out some really cool stuff as well as continually training her voice and piano skills. Some more recent songs I love from her are her cover of Muse’s Supremacy (Woodstock 2016) and the acoustic cover of Nightwish’s Sleeping Sun she did with Steve n’ Seagulls-it’s a crazy setting to see her in, but absolutely gorgeous.

I think "remained friends" is a bit wrong term since there was about 12 years in between when Tarja and Marko didn't talk to each other. And then only in 2023 did they really start to collaborate together and work on their friendship.

there was a reconciliation in 2017 at a Finnish tv xmas concert. They made up after a private and public apology. They sang Tarja's own rendition of Ave Maria together. Marko has been Tarja's guest on stage at least once since then and before 2023. Right now they appear together at some of the same venues so they performed together. Now 2025 they are touring together. Singing a mix of Nightwish , and solo songs. Right now Tarja had joined Within Temptation on their Bleed Out tour. 10 years since they recorded Paradise (What about Us). That is just a footnote on what was said above. Marko was an alcoholic who was drinking heavily back then. For the most part I think the band has almost got around to apologizing. Civil but chilled relations. As much as there is any communication. Marko left in 2021. He stopped drinking. Now they are like brother and sister having so much fun. and yes after high school and a classical training she did study in Germany gaining her Master's Degree in Music. Yes she studied German Lied (leed) singing. A form of chamber music. Now if you want to see her try actual oprera see 2013/4 Beauty and the beat. Her rendition of Mein Herr Marquis not bad at all for a non opera singer. And She has a 3.5 octave range topping of D6 flat if what the videos say are true. The impressive part stage shows use play back. This is live. Tarja was a co-founder of NW in 1996 w Tuomas (keyboard/composer/band leader) , and Emppu lead guitar. those two still in the band Marko Heitallia has been solo and with his brothers in a trio called Tarot. Classical training as well. He is about. 10 years the senior of his then bandmates Tarja will do 2 week tours and break for two. Protecting her health and voice. Her Christmas 2024 tour kicks off this week or next. Central Europe Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany. She has put out a Dark Christmas album last year worth discovering.

Another nice Tarja and Marko song where you'll hear Tarja do something different with her vocals is The Siren. For just Marko, others have mentioned High Hopes (same concert). The lads performed it while Tarja was changing her outfit. I agree. He is great in that. Others have mentioned While Your Lips are Still Red from the Wembley concert. You will hear his soft voice there. I would also suggest Endlessness, his last (mostly) solo performance with Nightwish. No livee performance of this as he left the band shortly after, but the lyrics music video is worth watching.

For me, Marko Hietala is the best Phantom Singer because he sings like the Phantom inside. Marko founded the heavy metal band Tarot with his brother in 1985 and is one of the pioneers of Finnish metal. He overstrained his voice, had to undergo surgery and since then he has not sounded as clear as he used to. Not a mistake in metal. The original idea was that both would share the lead until they found the right singer. Somehow that hasn't worked out to this day: TAROT - Wings Of Darkness (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) During Floor's first pregnancy he released a solo album that was more prog metal: MARKO HIETALA - Stones (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) After leaving Nightwish he announced that he would no longer make music. The reason for his retirement was depression. With new therapy he broke his word and went on tour again, including with Tarja. A new album is coming out in February, the current single from it. Apparently it's moving more towards heavy metal: MARKO HIETALA - Impatient Zero (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) He has also done numerous collaborations. Anyone who has an ear for opera will like Tarja. Her singing in early Nightwish was nothing short of miraculous for me (check out the Wishes to Eternity DVD - Deep Silent Complete, Beauty and the Beast, Pharaoh Sails to Orion, Swanheart, Elvenpath, Fantasmic). I also loved the contrast with Marko, for instance in Slaying the Dreamer (End of an Era DVD). People always recommend ballad type songs for Tarja but she loves rocking songs and does great with them. Her solo career is amazing - very diverse. Someone recommended Victim of Ritual from Woodstock as a showcase of her range (and what a great performer she is), using her deep chest voice and high head voice, that is a good start. O Holy Night (Dark Christmas album) and Song to the Moon (Live - Beauty and the Beat) are also great recommendations. I think the loud breathing and nasal thing are the consequence of her being very sick, too sick to attend the rehearsals. This was the last performance of their tour and recorded for a DVD so she bravely made it on the day through a long and challenging setlist. It's great to see Tarja and Marko performing together these days - they have undeniable chemistry when they perform together. So much to discover! Enjoy!

Marko sang lead on a few songs with Nightwish, including the cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" at this same show. He is lead singer in his first band ,Tarot, formed with his brother when he was 16. "Wings of Darkness" or "Tides" He released a solo album in 2020. "Stones" or "Voice of My Father". Last week he released a new song called "Impatient Zero". This concert was 2005, in Helsinki. Last concert on the tour for the 5th album, Once. And last Nightwish show for Tarja, she was fired after the concert, after 9 years and 5 albums. She has gone on to a long and successful solo career. For a NW original with Tarja and Marko singing, try "The Siren", also at this 2005 show. For Marko singing with Floor, try "Romanticide" at Wacken 2013.

Thanky you for great reaction. Tarja was great in Nightwish, but I like her even more today. Her vocal range is much wider. She recently covered Angels by Within Temptation, with whom she was on a European tour this fall. Her Dark Christmas album from last year is a gem, especially O Holy Night. Or her live concert Rocking Heels: Live from Metal Church, where she covered her favorite rock song like Numb by Linkin Park or Afterflife by Avenged Sevenfold. She and Marko are friends again now. Marko joined her for several tours that are planned at least until 2026.

And you pronounced Tarja and Marko's names perfectly😄👍 Tarja is the original singer of Nightwish. After Nightwish she went onto establishing her own solo career. She is still making music and touring worldwide after this performance here which was in 2005. I want to point out that in almost 20 years her voice has grown quite a bit. She sounds even more amazing nowadays. I highly recommend listening to something from her solo career. A good one for example is a song called Victim of Ritual and the live version from Woodstock (2016). It's a good showcase of her range. Tarja is a phenomenal singer, and so is Marko. Marko was not the original bassist of Nightwish nor is he with Nightwish any longer, but he is the bassist they have had the longest. Marko has many other projects. He has another band where he is the main singer, Tarot. They started way before Nightwish. Marko also has a solo career. He quit Nightwish in 2021 to focus on his mental health. After that he has been focusing on his solo career. There will be new album out from him next February. He just released a new single for that album, it's called Impatient Zero. It is so good!! Also about Tarja and Marko: when Tarja was fired from Nightwish in 2005, she wasn't in good terms with the other band members. Years and years later Tarja and Marko fixed their relationship and healed their friendship. They released a new song together this year, called Left on Mars. And they have been touring together singing old Nightwish songs, some other duets and Tarja's songs together. They will have another tour next year. And I just want to end this by saying that I personally think that Floor and Tarja are both great singers. No need for drama and comparisons (and I am glad you didn't do that). They are so different that in my mind it's impossible to compare and one can only enjoy both of their talents. And in real life, Tarja and Floor are actually friends. So no bad blood there between them.

In the Marko/Tarja era, the keyboardist/composer/lyricist of the vast majority of Nightwish's music, Tuomas Holopainen(who did this arrangement) once commented that he didn't know how he got so lucky as to have the best two voices in Finland in his band. They always sounded phenominal together. As for Marko, he has a long history in metal, going back before Nightwish. He is well loved and respected in Finland as one of the founders of metal there. Not bad for a guy who had a botched operation on his vocal cords very early in his career and had to learn to sing all over again. A good exercise in hearing Marko, then and now, is to first react to a song from this same concert, the cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes". As young as he was, that is still some time after his operation. Marko is no longer with Nightwish and a song that he just released in his solo career called "Impatient Zero" would be a good way to highlight how a singer changes and matures during the course of a long career. That song is quite metal and very emotional.

Marko has been lead vocalist in metal bands since 1984 so yes, he can sing. He was never a background vocalist in Nightwish, he was the male lead. There are plenty of Nightwish songs where Marko features prominently. The Islander (live in Tampere would be a good version) is one good pick for hearing Marko on lead for the whole song, While Your Lips Are Still Red (live in Wembley) is another. But I like his more aggressive sound, like in Weak Fantasy or Yours Is An Empty Hope.

Thank you for this analysis! Marko is an incredible singer. Interesting to note he suffered from a botched throat surgery 30ish years ago, had to completely relearn how to talk and sing with a partially paralysed vocal cord. He lost his entire falsetto range and had to relearn how to sing and get that range back, all with his head/chest mix. I recommend Nightwish’s cover of High Hopes, or the Islander live at Tampiere to see more of what he can do. He’s also got some incredible solo work - he just release Impatient Zero and it’s awesome!

For Marko (and yes, you have his name right), he actually had throat surgery well before this performance to remove a polyp, which was completely botched, causing him to lose his entire head voice range. He had to teach himself how to sing all over again, using nothing but his chest. So every note you are hearing from him is from his chest voice. Rumor has it that he had hired a vocal coach to help him learn to sing again.. some vocal coach named Floor Jansen!

Marco has a phenomenal voice in 2022. He won Finland‘s version of the masked Singer. He’s had his own career. He also had some surgery which caused I think a little bit of nerve damage but he will probably never be 100% where he used to be or so he said, but you should check out some of Marco’s solo endeavors with Nightwish while your lips are still red is a big one that was done for a movie the Islander at tempere. He can go from hard rock to ballads at the drop of a hat. He’s as well-versed as floor.

This was two years after Tarja finished her studies at the german music university Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, she specialized in Lied Singing. Before that she also studied classical singing at the Sibelius Academy, in Finland, but she have mentioned they didn't take her seriously there for being in a famous metal band, and that's why she moved to study in Germany. A fun fact is that, as a child/teen, she always wanted to sing like Whitney and Aretha but she said she didn't have a voice for that and couldn't find contemporary/pop singing lessons at her very small village in Kitee, Finland, so she started taking classical lessons instead and sing in a church choir. That said, when singing metal she was always trying to adapt her tchnique to sound a little more contemporary, and take a step aside from classical, although she never had serious formal contemporary singing lessons.

I've been yelling about the perfect timing of Tarja's vibrato matching the beat of the drums for ages, it's so cool 😅 her dark and clear voice is so beautiful, and Marko is just incredible❣ As others have mentioned, The Siren (End of an Era), Walking in the Air (From Wishes to Eternity concert) or Wishmaster (End of an Era) are more great performances from that era! :) Thank you so much for this detailled reaction, it was really interesting!

Marko has a couple of solo songs. There's the Pink Floyd cover "High Hopes" -- just the men of Nightwish with Marko doing the vocals and bass. The other is the acoustic song "The Islander" (live at Tampere). He and Tarja have sung together recently, including The Phantom of the Opera.

Isn't "Islander" a song with mostly Marko? You can easilly find it in live version. There is another great Marko's performance in "Master, Passion, Greed" but this is one too angry / agressive for Nightwish to performe it live. So, only studio version. Moreover Marko is frequently singing in Ayreon's projects, even live so you might like that rabbit hole. In fact Ayreon consists only of best singers (Floor, Simone, Hansi, Tommy etc.) so you might like listen to that ass well.

Nightwish stole mine....when I heard "Sacrament of Wilderness" with the original NW line-up. That was in 1998. Maybe you know that the founding members of NW are Tuomas, Emppu and Tarja. They made it all possible to begin even though Jukka joined soon. By the way...you mentioned La Traviata - Tarja makes that too in a YT video also. This combo is so awesome when they do the duet...in this heavy style. Marco is so great male singer too. He really can do plenty also solo...and lately again with Tarja.

In this time she sings more in her chest voice, it is maybe not so "operatic" as in the past, but a little bit powerful i can say, a little weird if someone expect that classical singing, and if you want to experience this, maybe version "The phantom of the opera" from 2023 or 2024 is good option. It is with Marko too, or some different songs like for example "I walk alone" from her solo era

Marko is also part of a 'group project' called Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) with a bunch of metal singers performing Finnish Christmas classics. They have live concerts each year. I'm sure there are loads of songs, but Heinillä Härkien Kaukalon is a beautiful Christmas hymn translating roughly to 'on the hay in the trough of the oxen' (Raskasta Joulua Heinillä härkien kaukalon Akustisesti Official video). The second singer is Jarkko Ahola, another incredible rock vocalist. Varpunen Jouluaamuna performed live by Marko with a children's choir is amazing. The story behind the song is a sad one. Zacharias Topelius (a Swedish speaking Finnish poet, writer, scholar etc.) wrote it to honor his one year old son Rafael's sudden death. The "sparrow" in the song is the spirit of the boy coming from the Land of Angels, to whom his sister ("the girl") gives the seed. The song is very emotional and many people are in tears when singing it. Marko's performance is perfect. (Raskasta Joulua 2019 | "Sparrow on Christmas Morning" by Marco Hietala (English lyrics)).

Marko is a beast of a Phantom! Another vote for "High Hopes" from the same show. Tarja's album "Harus" is also very worth listening to! (btw "harus" in Indonesian means "must" but I don't know if Tarja knew it when naming it!) A younger Marko underwent a botched throat surgery and had to learn to speak and sing all over again! Love Tuomas' arrangement too!

If you want to hear baby Marko, try "Wings of Darkness" (the old version), it's a song from his first band called Tarot, it was before his vocal chord surgery and shows his vocal range at that time. Another great piece is Pink Floyd "High Hopes" cover, it was performed during the same show as Phantom of the Opera you just reacted to. When it comes to his more recent stuff I would definitely recommend "Varpunen jouluaamuna" where he sings in Finnish. Hope you will like these :)
