The keyboard player is Tuomas Holopainen. Founder, and composer of the majority of the group's music. His ability to write epic poetry in a non-native language reminds me of Joseph Conrad, who did likewise.

This song is an absolute banger 🤘❤‍🔥🤘. Kai's drumming on this is just crazy ( Kai Hahto "The Human Metronome", or in my book Kai "The Machine Gun" Hahto )!!! In one interview Tuomas/Marko said that Floor has a lungs of a dolphin (That long note is 💥)!!! Plus, she holds the last note (A4) of Nightwish - Ad Astra for 17 seconds (10/6/2022 Sweden Festival). If this wasn't impressive enough, I can also add than now she's just one, I mean ONE, second short from equaling Pavarotti's longest belt ever recorded. PS: that "piano" player is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. The bass player and vocals: Marko Hietala "The Viking" (ex Nightwish). Guitar Wizard: Emppu Vuorinen the Electric Hobbit and trickster (Finnish guitarist, most famous for being a founding member of Nightwish and occasional songwriter). Vuorinen is primarily a rhythm player, often supporting the keyboard or orchestral parts of Nightwish songs. However, he plays lead melodies and solos as well. Vuorinen's solo techniques usually include alternate picking, tapping, sliding, legato, and minor to extreme whammy bar use; he also employs sweep picking, although very rarely. His solos are more melodic than those of most metal bands, but he sometimes shreds (notably in "Nightquest," "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion," "Romanticide," and "Gethsemane" by Nightwish, and also in "Traitor" by Tarot, for which he provided a solo). Your cool and entertaining to watch. I'm 75 and I'm here for only Nightwish with Floor or Floor solo stuff if you ever get there. But, NIGHTWISH - The Phantom Of The Opera (OFFICIAL LIVE) and Nightwish - High Hopes [HD] from their 2005 End of Era concert are exceptional. No Floor, but still mind boggling. ReVamp - Disdain Live at Graspop (2010) with Floor, and also 2018 NORTHWARD - While Love Died (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) with Floor will shake you up a bit. Guaranteed.

Bassist Marko has said that this is a "love song", a poetic, mythological & metaphorical love song of a man (Devil) and woman (Mermaid of the Deep Dark Ocean- the Oceanborn) where she does not return his love or seductions. "I will die for the love of the mermaid, Her seduction, beauty and scorn. Welcome to the end of your life, HAIL the OCEANBORN". This creates chaos in the Mermaids world, “Disgraced is my virginity, death has woven my wedding dress”. As the Mermaid begs “Leave me be!” the Devil says “This apathetic life must drown”. The music then becomes intense and the stage lights turn BLUE (for the Ocean) as the Siren belts out these sharp staccato notes. In the end they break up "setting the dolphins free". Their "song" is over but will “echo” and carry on, "the eternity will begin once again in peace" they both move on. Metal Musical Theater at its best!!!

Nice description. I heard Marko once say in an early interview at a Finnish Metal "conference" that Nightwish songs are Finnish folk music. I imagine Tuomas drew heavily on the local mythology which inspired much of the early music, and I think that appealed to Marko.

And here's the kicker: The song predates everyone in the band except for Tuomas (keyboards) and Emppu (guitar). If I remember right, this is off their second album, Oceanborn, which while Tarja Turunen sang the female vocals, they brought in Tapio Wilska from Finntroll and Senthian to sing the male vocals. The song is from 1998, so it definitely ages well.

And now for something completely different: Version 1: get in the wayback machine to Nightwish with their first singer, Tarja Turinen doing either "Phantom of the Opera (with Marco singing the male part) or "I Wish I had an Angel" both from the End of an Era concert [the music video for "I Wish I had an Angel" also kicks ass as they have very high production standards on the videos just like they have for the concerts]. Version 2: Floor singing something quiet (solo)--her cover of "Shallow" from the Beste Zangers TV show in 2019.

And as we call names: the most underrated guitarplayer in the metalmusic world is Emppu Vourinen, and the guy with the beard, sing and playing the Warwick-bass is one of the best rock singer in Europe: Marko Hietala (but since he's 2020 no longer with Nightwish😪). Jukka Koskinen from the famous finnishe band 'Wintersun' replaced him. But he doesn't sing so far. Also Kai Hahto came from 'Wintersun'. B.t.w. you must check 'Wintersun' "Sons of winter and stars" and "Time" (if not done yet...)
