This performance was from the 2005 Helsinki concert (End of an Era DVD), original lead singer Tarja Turunen's last Nightwish show, she was backstage changing outfits. . After the show, the guys gave her an open letter dismissing her from the band after 9 years and 5 albums. She has gone on to a long and successful solo career. David Gilmore HAS heard this, and he loved it. This was song #8 in an 18 song set. Marko is his name. He kills it. He only sang lead in a few songs with Nightwish during his tenure (2001-2021). He sang lead in a band called Tarot before joining Nightwish. Marko sung several covers over the years while she was changing, he also did Megadeth Symphony of Destruction To hear Tarja(the most operatic of the 3 female leads), and Marko killing it again, try The Siren, or their cover of Phantom of the Opera , from this same show. To hear Tarot , try Wing of Darkness or Tides.

I concur exactly with your feelings! Isn't that what music is about - going your own way? Music is an art form and should show what is in the heart of the artist. The bands you name and VERY few more these days follow that mantra. Isn't it sad, really - what is and what could be, if others made an effort?

The female singer at the time is very, very significant to the reason they did this tribute here. This was Tarja's very last concert with the band and the infamous letter was given to her that night after the show. It is very apropos to where they were as band and where they were headed.

Jukka left the kit due to severe insomnia. Je is visibly suffering during this show and killed it anyway. He is now involved with the management of the band, when is illness got to the point where he had to stop playing he asked is good friend Kia, from the band Winterson to take his place. Kia is the human metronome and is an excellent replacement. Although I liked the passion Jukka had playing , he beat the skins like they stole his lunch money.

I love this version of High Hopes, and I saw the original played by PF on the Division Bell Tour. The Big Bell PF used in the stage show was impressive, but Tuomas does well simulating the sound, Marco has so much more angst and emotion in his singing, and Empuu's version of the Guitar parts is right on point. I have found that early concerts tended to have the band play one of a variety of songs they like from other bands during the mid show costume change for the lead singer. More recently, I think Nightwish plays a Nightwish written Celtic styled instrumental ( Last of the Wilds ) for the mid concert singer's break/costume change.

As people have mentioned before, this is from their "End of an Era" concert, the final show they performed with Tarja before they fired her. Notice how melancholic the rest of the band looks during this song; even Emppu, who is usually all smiles, looks so sad here. Because they all know what's about to happen at the end of the show... You mentioned how Jukka (the drummer) is highly animated in his style. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but he was actually in much more anguish than he let on here; in addition to the anxiety of what was to come, Jukka was also suffering from a terrible migraine during this concert. You can tell during those times when you see him clutching his head and shielding his eyes. The fact that he still went as hard as he did is a testament to how tough he truly is, since migraines can be QUITE crippling. And beating the shit out of a drum set for over an hour can't exactly be helpful.

Tarja era Nightwish used to play covers of some heavy classics too, after Marko joined Nightwish in 2001, while Tarja was changing attire backstage. There are some videos, but the audio is not very good. I think "Symphony of Destuction" was one song they performed. Edit: NightWish - Symphony of Destruction on CelticMetalLord channel has quite ok audio. Live recording with no live video. I think Nightwish released it on a bonus DVD, or something.

Marko is the Finnish Metal God! His band Tarot was one of the first, possibly the first, bands who brought metal to Finland (back then without a beard in full 80s glam getup, very cute!). Nowadays Finland is the most metal country in the world and a big part of this musical culture is thanks to him. He is pretty much the most respected musician around and is always either first or last to sing in every collaborative metal project from Finland out of respect. From helping out Hevisaurus, who play metal for kids, to being the undisputed king of the Tuska festival anniversary song. Check out his solo stuff too, he absolutely ruled when I saw him on Thursday last week :D He is also absolutely hilarious but unfortunately you do not see that side of him in Nightwish. Additionally his vocal abilities extend far beyond what he does in Nightwish, even if he has done a ton of different things there too. It's totally worth investigating everything he is involved in, he blossoms much more in other projects.

I'd say Roger Waters has very little to say about this as it was written after he left PF but Gilmour loved it

Marko has been a member, guest musician, session musician etc with over 60 bands in his career. We were lucky to have had him in Nightwish for as long as we did. Good luck to him in whatever the future holds for him.

This was End of an Era 2005 the last concert of Tarja Turunen and no it is only Marko Hietala singing here! A friend of mine, also a huge fan of Pink Floyd liked this also very much...but his words No Cover but a Homage. The after story from this concert will cross your path, it was a huge one! But hey No Spoilers, just saying this brought my favorite song from Nightwish! Thnx for doing this and cant wait for the next one 🤘🎩🥰

NightWish Army Wisconsin Chapter here. Marco kills this song, the whole band does. Make no mistake though, this is NOT a cover, it is a tribute. A cover is a bands version of the song, Toumas is extensively careful to matching the TONE that was invested in the original. He wanted NightWish to feel this song as strongly as Pink Floyd did. He wanted to pay tribute to them, not remake it. ❤🤘

Roger Waters had nothing to say, really. He was out of Pink Floyd around "The Division Bell" But David Gilmour liked it

Roger Waters had left Pink Floyd about 10 years before this song was written. He would probably think it is uninteresting since he is, in my opinion, a little to occupied with his own ego. David Gilmour though would probably like this rendition of the song.

Marko's vocals kick ass. He is the male version of Floor vocally. Sustaining notes without breathing in between. Both Marko and Floor have massive lung capacity, which honestly makes them the best vocalists on earth. Thanks so much for reacting to this epic tribute. Cheers.

This was early days of Nightwish when they didn't have much of a back catalogue so you will find some covers/ tributes in their performances of this era. These dropped away soon after this once they had enough material of their own to pull from.
