in order to fully understand this song, you must know that its really old, from 17th century...back then, women had zero say in who they married, and cheating on your husband meant risking your life....so basically she risks everything for a night with her true love, and he keeps silent+ goes to jail to protect her - even though 'jail' back then meant unheated dungeon cell and very hard physical labor, and 10 years of it could very well kill you.
