This was always nightwish's most emotional song. After they split with tarja tuomas got a lot of heat from the fan base after he made her firing very public. He felt like he'd been tried in the court of public opinion and was borderline suicidal. This song was the result.

29:54. Ok here goes. This band and her voice literally saved my life almost 4 years ago. I am a recovering alcoholic I crawled into a bottle after I lost my father, my 2 best friends in 2008. i was a fucking wreck for a long time after. Never drank infront of my kids nor my wife and never drove drunk, so I did it behind closed doors. One day in late 2019, something sturred in me and said stop so I did. Told my wife and kids what I did and told them I would understand if they hated me. They didn't but she couldn't stay there with the kids so she left and took my kids to her mother's. Once again I understood and still went with cleaning myself by myself. In February 2020 , pandemics was in full effect. Even though I was 4 months in, I had developed problems so I went to the hospital. While I was diagnosed with Liver cirrhosis and type 2 diabetes and told me if I hadn't stopped I'd be dead. Now I was depressed and scared to death there. I was hospitalized for about 3 weeks. So while in there all I had was my phone ( didn't have a TV didn't have my own room) so I decided to go on youtube to find something to watch. The first thing I saw was this band Nightwish and the song Poet and the Pendulum. I watched the same one you did with the words and let me tell you, it spoke volumes to me, maybe not in the same way for everyone else but for me it hit my heart deeply and I started to cry. After I started to listen to more of them and it was like someone turned a bright light on and it told me to fight. Fight for your wife, your kids and yourself! Back then I was on the transplant list for a new liver and all the meds ( non narcotic) for it and my diabetes. Today I am 4 1/2 years sober, I am off the transplant list because my liver has started to heal and got my diabetes under control. I'm still in End stage and still a diabetic but it's now under control. Nightwish saved my life and their music is an inspiration that tells me to never stop fighting, and I haven't! Sorry for this being long but you seem to be a person that doesn't judge so thank you!🌹

It was performed during that tour. But after that they haven’t performed it and Tuomas has actually said flat out that he is done with that song. According to him he has finished processing the whole thing and therefore he doesn’t feel the need to have it on the setlist. We must realize that this song is a part of Tuomas’s soul and it has deep emotional meaning to him. If he keeps it on the setlist it will keep poking the wound so to speak.

Do people fight over it??? Oh, Sweetie, they're still fighting over it. I walked away from Nightwish in the early days because I cannot take the "operatic style singing," and missed several years of great pleasure not knowing this break happened. Tarja fans are equally loyal as Nightwish fans, and they will bristle at my just saying what I did already. You must understand that Tarja is, literally, a goddess in Finland. This entire song is based on the threats and comments made to Tuomas regarding the firing of their goddess. BTW - I'm in the US (California) and Nightwish concerts are packed when they play here, but I don't know anybody who went to her recent show. That doesn't mean she doesn't sell, it's probably because I don't hang with people who love opera. Floor can sing operatic lines, but she doesn't round the sounds and make them sound stuffy like typical opera. I describe it as Tarja was very wonderful in her lane, and she stayed in her lane. Anette was more pop, and she also stayed in her lane. Floor has the talent and ability to drive in multiple lanes, so she's all over the highway. Her color pallet is far wider and richer in my mind, and this gives Tuomas a greater flexibility in composition. My opinion, only my opinion, and I respect those who differ from mine.

Agree. Didn't care for Nightwish under the two previous vocalists. I also wrote them off and as a result, discovered what they became with Floor much later than I would have liked. Once finally hearing them with Floor, I was instantly on board! Floor completed the Nightwish sound and moved it up many levels.

Just a little correction... Tarja is a goddess just to her fans, and that is not in anyway limited to Finland. I didn't care for her style and lack of versatility, and every time i mention it, i get hate from multiple nationalities :D

Nightwish didn’t appear on my radar until after Floor joined the band, but I did go back and take in their earlier music with Tarja and Annette. I like much of Tarja’s studio singing, but could not take her concert singing where her operatic style was laid on more thickly. As for Annette, well after hearing Floor’s singing I found it hard to appreciate little Anette other than for the fact that she kept the band together long enough for Floor to mature. Frankly, I am not a big fan of Floor’s earlier work either. Her with Nightwish though, and Nightwish with her, are match made in musical heaven-they were both made better. Now, what do we do to get Marko back into the band??
@chadbennett7873
@chadbennett7873 Жыл бұрын
@@gsparkman Boy, do I ever agree with you. Marco leaves a huge hole in the voice that matches Floor's, Troy does a great job, but just does not have the power. I've heard that Marco once said that he finally had a voice he couldn't overpower. They are truly another match made in heaven. Didn't hurt that he was also a virtuoso on bass and guitar. As far as I've heard, I have no idea if Tarja can sing anything but the hoity-toity opera, because I never heard her do anything else. I heard from operatically trained reviewers, that opera singers are taught not to mix styles. (In other words, don't pull the stick out.). They were amazed how Floor effortlessly flows between any and all styles and doesn't miss a thing. Excellent comment!

@robertsheeler321

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band)were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

He said it himself, I don't remember if it was a written article or a video. I think it was fairly new too (when I saw it, let's say somewhere bc (before c-virus), but not too many years). Bye Bye Beautiful was the song Tuomas wrote for Tarja, Master Passion Greed was the song he wrote for Marcelo... The Poet and the Pendulum was a response to ALL the undeserving fallout from basically the entire music world blaming Tuomas for tearing Nightwish apart... (emos don't like change much) The man even got a nasty letter from the President of Finland for God's sake.... this is about the family, friends and fans that mean so much to him turning on HIM ..... the Tarja situation was not new, it merely became too difficult to continue.... it was the response from the FANS that blew his mind and shattered his soul at the time. Marcelo quite simply became Nightwish's Yoko Ono.... I do not believe Tarja needed a big push to think herself the deserving, larger than life one in the band... six people onstage and all the applause was for HER... she distanced herself from everything but the onstage performance.... that is NOT a bandmate, why would they consider her one?

She distanced herself for very good reasons. The guys had provoked it unnecessarily for years. But as you can see with the separation from Anette they unfortunately didn't learn their lesson yet, because they did the same to her wgat they did to Tarja. And maybe they did that to Sami too, but we will never know because they didn't talk much about the separation from him. It's not always the others who are guilty, you know? The guys really needed to take responsibility - and they did: later they apologized to Tarja for their ugly behaviour towards her.

Funny enough, it was Marko who was the first person to suggest kicking Tarja out of the band, and they have since reconciled. They just performed together last week, singing the Phantom of the Opera. I believe Tarja is this really talented singer that couldn't cope with the many gigs and concerts the rest of the band loved doing. She wasn't part of the whole proces of creating music like the others but she is a fantastic (classical) singer. I don't know a lot about Anette but I know Floor is someone that loves the stage and meeting the fans, feeling the connection. She missed it a lot during the pandemic. She also loves to take part in creating the songs and how to perform. She is a composer as well and a kind of a musical nerd and perfectionist. Therefore she fits so well in Nightwish, being as passionate about making music and connecting with the listeners/ fans.

one of those reminders that in your darkest moments... light can shine. I'm sure many thought Tarja's firing was the end, but then (in the long run) we got Floor joining and many (if not most) think this is the best version of NW. life is full of ups and downs, but being strong enough to survive the bad is what gets you through to the good. this song was a suicide note for Tuomas, having stated he killed himself in song to prevent him from doing it in real life, but in those darkest moments I'm sure he had no idea what was to come... what highs they would reach, and all the love and support that was coming to him/them through Wacken '13, the Vehicle of Spirit tour including the Wembley show, etc. So many great moments post-Tarja... personally and professionally. so grateful, as a fan, that Tuomas was strong enough to see it through. Can't imagine a world without Tuomas/Floor having found each other...

This is a polarised topic, we don't know exactly what happened, we only know what they (Nightwish and Tarja) told us. The truth is most probably somwhere in the middle, the truh is probably that both sides share responsability for that. Because of that, one shouldn't pick a side between the two. People outside of Nightwish picking sides is what caused Tuomas' depression and caused a schism among the fans, a schism so big that still today some people think they need to defend either Tuomas or Tarja and hate the other one and her fans. It's been almost 20 years, We should all be able to put that behind and to enjoy Nightwish, what it's been, what is and alos enjoy Tarja's solo career.

What an emotional masterpiece, right? They don't call Tuomas the Metal Mozart for nothing, and I'm so damn glad he put what he had in his mind into this musically brilliant way and not into action. Just for the lyrics 'Now I only have three minutes of counting' just before the 7-minute mark and what can be heard/seen exactly three minutes later in this song/video, he is for me one of the absolute best of our time. Maybe even the greatest composer/songwriter of our time (imo). If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend the documentary about the tour that changed everything called 'Please learn the Setlist in 48 Hours'. It's worth it, I can tell you that much. And I'm sure you'll appreciate and love Floor even more afterward. _____________________ _"Sometimes we laugh because we're sad or to hide our frustration"_ - from *Gacharic Spin* -「 I Wish I 」 🎶✨

There's a version of this song that just has Marko Hietela on vocals! This album was written and demos were recorded before Nightwish hired a new Vocalist, so for the demos of this album Marko is singing. They released a bunch of the demos, including this one.

Regardless of the letters and of the origin being the breakup, this song is mainly about the depression Tuomas went through afterwards. He said in a couple of interviews he had to commit suicide in the song to avoid doing it in real life. Hence the beginning "The end. The songwriter's dead". The first parts of the play are about hid depression, with elements of "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe. The last section, which in this musical suicide would represent his father and mother welcoming him in the afterlife, are in reality the words his mother told him and that helped him overcome that depression. Rearranged to rhyme, I assume.

Hey Ashley. Ah, the great destroyer of the Nightwish Army. I consider this to be Tuomas's greatest work, myself. I know Anette recorded this, but I've never heard it, and probably won't- this is so perfect. (And I'm *eternally* impressed, watching Marco's finger work during the 4th part, while he's singing. Wow!) Rock onnnn! 🤘😎👍

This song, for me, is one of the big three ("Ghost Love Score" given us by Tarja, "The Poet And The Pendulum" given us by Anette and "The Greatest Show On Earth" given us by Floor), and for Nightwish fans , this song is the most meaningful...And yet, Floor took this song to a new astral level (originally sung by Anette). Also I recommend to read "The Pit and The Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe for extra flavor. The reason for Tuomas’ depression was not the firing of Tarja itself, it was what came after that. The fans idolized Tarja and they could not accept the fact that she got fired. In their heads Tarja was the one that made the band famous and they became really angry and hostile, especially towards Tuomas. They really took it out on him. They called him all kinds of ugly things and a lot of them expressed that they did not care if he would die. These are the things that brought him into depression and these are the things that echo through the lyrics This song has the most emotional impact, at least for me... I was that that "Bastard" who abandoned Nightwish after Tarja left...Never Again !!!! Although I love this song (Especially this version), it is the only song, I can't put to my playlist... because, I break down to tears every single time (Current reaction included...). This masterpiece will remain a reminder to me for my narrow mindlessness. Nuff Said !!! NWSU/FloorFan🤘😎🤘.

To show how brilliant this song is, and how brilliant Tuomas is, when the boy in the speaking part says, "...I have but 3 minutes and counting", (23:00) almost exactly 3 minutes later (26:01) is when Tuomas symbolically slashes at his throat to symbolize his death.

The brilliance, nuance and mastery of Tuomas’ songwriting and lyrics never ceases to amaze me. If you run a timer from where he says “I have 3 minutes and counting “ it is at 3 minutes when he simulates with his hand the pendulum cutting his throat. Amazing!🤘🤘

Tuomas at 28:15 gets me every time as does Floor, always. This phenomenal masterpiece and live performance was my introduction to Nightwish and Floor Jansen around 18 months ago after I was pestered by a good friend in to listening to them. I wasn't expecting to like symphonic metal but was blown away and have been ever since having my musical world turned upside down and inside out. 🙏😊👍❤️

yes nightwish had different singers...but that is the progression typically of orchestrations and musical interpretations of many composers of which Tuomas is absolutely a grand composer and song writer and took a life experience and turned it into a grand composition..every nightwish song tells another story and stories dont all have the same voice..for me i always loved the material with Anette..i loved her fire and energy as well..but Tarja and Floor have a more euphoric story telling voice and they convey the story with a greater sense of conviction..they were and are all still amazing and so is the band nightwish as a whole..cant wait to hear new stories to come from them.

There were rumors of separation three years earlier. Tuomas had poached Marko from Sinergy three years earlier and explained to their boss Kimberley why he needed Marko from her Band. He also questioned Tarja. Kimberley made the private conversation public and Tuomas denied everything. After that the relationship between Tarja and the band got worse and worse. The timing of the ejection may have come as a surprise to Tarja, but not the ejection itself.

This song is a freaking masterpiece! Personally, I was depressed for too many years and an alcoholic. When I first heard this song...I cried because I could relate! I got help for the depression, and I have been sober for 24 years and 20 days now. I listen to NIghtwish and Floor's first walk album when I am painting, ( I am an artist ). Their music inspires me, and I seem to be able to create better paintings.

Hello The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands

This song always makes me cry. I’m an empath so I truely feel the pain in my chest. Floor’s delivery doesn’t help, she really conveys the emotions of the song. One of the things i like most in this performance is what’s going on up on stage. Everyone on stage is really supporting Tuomas throughout the song. Empuu walk up and talks to him, Floor throws comforting looks his way and at the end you see the guys together in a tight circle. You can really tell that the whole band knows that Tuomas feels pain every time they perform it. And lastly, listen to Floors solemn “thank you”. This shows that this band is truly a family.

Think it is difficult for anyone who is not from Finland to appreciate just how important to their country is the band Nightwish, Tarja was seen as an untouchable goddess, as front woman she gained huge popularity and a fan base, Tuomas was and remains the principle writer, but the others have always had input into the songs. Many of the fan base turned very nasty to Tuomas after the sacking, in the song he commits suicide, so that his depression didn’t actually kill him. When Annette came on board this signalled the biggest period of album sales in the bands history. Now with Floor they are mainly downloads and streaming.

They say that time heals all wounds and in this case it seems to apply. They don't play this song anymore since they moved on since then and started to heal their injuries from this conflict. There was even a video, rather recently, where Tarja and Marco (who also departed from Nightwish) perform The Phantom of the Opera together just like in old times.

Machiavellian greed destroys souls. The Band unanimously decided to publish the letter, I think to prevent the narcisist husband making an alternative narrative. He was doing things behind her back, maybe she was not fully aware, blinded by love (he can do no wrong). The words of his mother: "In the end I will always love you", then Marko moves over to join Emppu with Tuomas, solidarity.

It was necessary to hear the truth behind the change. The open letter cut out any chance of rumors festering amongst the fans; the Nightwish Army. At the end of this masterpiece, Marko and Emppu go up and stand with Tuomas to show their support in the decision that was made to let Tarja go...

They own your emotions. You are reduced to a stearless emotional blob under their power. They take you anywhere. From amazement to anger to sorrow in a nutshell. And that is a gift not given to many musicians. They are forming the Pinnacle of that. All, and I mean all their songs are fantastic. Who can compete with that? For a change, be it slightly different is Arjen Lucassen with Ayreon. That is another Rabbit Hole worth looking in to...

Hi Ash the Amazing I very rarely comment but I figured perhaps it was time 2 quietly say Hi & That I've been really enjoying you channel 4 some time now 😉👍✨ I've been wondering when you might get to this song as it's a biggie & there's a lot behind it as you've discovered. Like many Nightwish fans who've become Enchanted & Discovered the Magic & Emotion, I'm very thankful that a certain Maestro & Magical Songmaker in possibly his darkest of times chose to take his life in Song as opposed to Real Life. So glad you read the letters, it's a lot,I know, but we'll worth it in order to fully understand the context of the song, or should I say Journey 😉✨ Anyhow, on a lighter note... Well fight over Nightwish is something I'd refrain from, but my brother and i cannot get consent over the different styles of Nightwish music between Tarja times and Floor ... I am kind of torn still ...I totally love Floor and what she brings to the table, but back in the day Tarja was a pure goddess herself and when they got rid of her, I was devastated and did lose interest in the band for many years until I stumbled over a reaction channel reviewing GLS ... My brother however really thinks that Tarja's voice was what made the band stick out of every other band ... I am not sure about this, I believe Floor added just an other edge and I love that sound even more, however I would not want to have missed either of them and really hope that there will be another tour around Europe maybe even with Marco once more ...
