More about the NIHA Fortress :
Niha is one of the most known destinations in the area, with many caves, both natural and man-made. One among them, a cave-fortress that was cut into a cliff during the Crusades between 1165 and 1260, is named Niha's Castle or Shakif Tiron.
The Fortress of Niha is one of the ancient fortress's in Lebanon, which has been first mentioned in 975 AD. it is today visited as a cultural heritage in the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve. Carved into the rock of a cliff overlooking the Bisri and Aray valley, the Fortress of Niha has been monitoring the road between Sidon and the Beqaa valley. It is mentioned for the first time in 975 AD and later in 1133. It has been controlled alternatively by the Crusaders and local Muslims until its destruction in 1261. In 1270, the Mamluk leader Baibars ordered it rebuilt. In 1585, the Emir Qorqomaz Maan probably took refuge in it briefly before his death. It is reputed that the Emir Fakhr-al-Din II also found refuge there before he was executed by the Pasha of Damascus in 1635, but it might more probably have been his father Emir Korkomaz, in 1584. Shaped like a cave over a hundred meters deep, the fortress features chambers and rooms which were dug in order to shelter the soldiers and as depots for domestic work. Water resources were provided both by a rain collecting system and through a pipe from the 'Ain el-Halquoum spring. It also had a considerable number of silos for storing provisions.
The Maqam of Nabi Ayyoub (The Prophet Job) is located at the top of a mountain, about 1,400m above sea level, it was renovated several times, and buildings, halls and rooms were added in order to accommodate the thousands of worshippers. In 1947, Sheikh Akl Muhammad Abou Chakra began the restoration of the premises and the work has continued ever since. The main building hosts the tomb of the saint, Darih El Nabi Ayyoub , under a large cupola topped with the colored Druze star. Believers from various religious communities across the country visit the shrine for its benedictions and graces. A large esplanade in front of the main building offers a fantastic panoramic view. In an annex, there are rooms available for pilgrims who wish to sleep in the maqam. To the rear of the shrine is a tree said to be miraculous, and, behind the sanctuary, a forest with century-old oak trees where visitors can enjoy a picnic. But the main attraction of this forest is a century-old arbutus tree, known to be miraculous and full of benedictions and graces. Local tradition says that this tree cured Job of skin disease.
Job is a prophet in the Abrahamic monotheist religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. He is presented as a good and prosperous family man, who is beset with terrible disasters that take away all he holds dear, including his offspring, his health and his property. He struggles to understand his situation and searches for answers.
