Another reason for the patent leather was that for years MJ thought it would be cool to add shiny material a shoe, but Tinker wouldn't add it because there was no functional reason to do so. Tinker designed the 11s while MJ was playing baseball, so he wanted the upper to double as a baseball cleat as well as a basketball shoe. While designing the 11s, Tinker took in a baseball game while on a trip to Japan. He noticed that all the Japanese players' cleats were made completely of patent leather, and when inquired as to why, they said it was because the patent leather made it easy to wipe dirt off of their shoes and keep them clean. Since the 11s were going to double as a cleat, Tinker NOW had a reason to incorporate patent leather into a sneaker and that's how it ended up on the 11s. MJ wound up coming back to basketball before the 11s released, so MJ introduced them to the world as a basketball shoe first, and not as a cleat. But there are some players who did get cleat versions of the 11s, and you can see how the patent leather allows them to easily wipe away the dirt and keep them looking fresh!

I like these videos. Even though I'm not from NYC, I been watching this guys video for a while. Before his hair turned all white. I used to shop at a store in my neighborhood here in Chicago that had the same layout. And I miss those days. The small businesses are an endangered species. Most of the good ones here in Chicago are gone. And nowadays you got these hype beast/hipster sneaker shops that backdoor most of their Hyped shoe releases. Its a shame that things change for the worse. I remember the days of going to the store with my parents to get kicks and a fit. Then eventually going on my own to cop kicks and fitted hats. I loved that back in the day, when you copped kicks and some gear you could work out a discount. And leave out the store feeling good. Now we leave out the store feeling like we spent too much. 😞
