This is an excellent tutorial it explains the basics very well then more and more complexity is added to provide enough detail but without oversimplifying things

The LIGO in the US is the practical application. The gravity waves produces tiny vibrations. These tiny vibrations cause the length of the fabry perot arms to change causing a signal to be detected by the optical sensor

Gravitational waves can easily pass through the mirrors.Gravitational waves are not similar to electromagnetic waves, that can not pass through metals etc.
