I switched to using only a Cycle in my home city of Bengaluru, the most traffic congested city in the world, to see if our roads are ready for a revolution in non-motorized transport. Why? Because traffic & air pollution is off the charts, and we need to phase out fossil fuels before it's too late!

These cycle lanes are an effect of DULT, BBMP & WRI coming together for the Bengaluru Smart City (@BLRSmartCity) initiative, a campaign to decongest Bangalore's roads, improve NMT infrastructure & much more. Citizens & cyclists alike have advocated for these campaigns in collaboration with the governing bodies to make them a success.
There are some fantastic initiatives being carried out in Bengaluru by citizens, civil society organizations, corporates and most importantly our government. Its time we step out and support them! I'm linking a few of these initiatives below for your information -

You guys are doing a great job and I wish you guys all the success but I must ask you to incorporate some more safety devices on your cycles. The pedal cycles must be provided with reflectors and side view mirrors for the newbies if you can also add a dynamo powered front lights even better. At the very least please incorporate more reflectors, as of now Yulu riders are also in perennial danger while riding after dark because of low visibility, wish you guys the best.

I don't think so we'll completely switch to cycling primarily because it's Exhausting and there are many reasons why they can't replace normal vehicles but electric scooters like the one which suraj was driving can be considered as an option definitely because of how mobile it is and it ain't exhausting either I wanna come to Bangalore for those electric cycles

Cycling can become an inter-neighborhood travel option, if work commute becomes impractical. And yes the electric scooters could work too. A network or rental cycles & scooters in combination with the metro and regular buses is the sweet spot!

This is a very important vlog because about 29 percent of pollution comes from transportation! I live in Dubai and though its developing at the speed of light it doesn't prioritize pedestrians, cyclists and anyone on bikes. There is a lack of shading and with the temperature that UAE withholds its impossible to commute longer distances without sunburns and this could be you driving at 7 in the morning. Another issue, Nikhil, is the way the city is planned. Education institutions are super far from residential spaces etc. and likewise for other spaces. And the pandemic has had people realize the importance of activity and the IMPACT of our actions on the environment. But, Suraj and you stirring this conversation is all applause! ALSO, SIDE HOGI!!!! AHAHAHhaha

Very interesting video! Do you know the channel NotJustBikes? I'm a big fan of that, it compares cycle infrastructure in The Netherlands and North America and basically shows everything that's wrong with car centric city designs, it's very educational. It's great to also get an insight in what it's like in India! I feel like many developing countries tend to copy the American model and just build more roads for cars rather than focusing on cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, which would be better and would make cities far more livable

I actually love cycling very much but the area where I live (RR Nagar) isn't like what it used to be. The road here has potholes for every meters and is very bumpy too so isn't suitable for cycling. And not to mention the crowds, like people here literally walk in middle of the road 😭 Another headache is that people park their huge cars on both sides of the road where even the BMTC buses can barely travel through these roads 🤕 And well, since I'm an degree student now my whole day just goes for going to college, coming back from college, do the assignment and get ready for next day lol ~

For non Bengalureans, what is shown in this video is not even close to 10% of what a cyclist experience in the city at present, ie 2024. What is shown here is a leisure ride during non peak hours, which is not the right use case for a cycle. Chaotic traffic, and drivers with no road sense, over speeding, heavy vehicles(bus, medium sized trucks), rash autos, pot holes, speed(back) breakers...the list goes on. Cyclist brave all odds, and the only thing they survive on is a GOOD SET OF BRAKES, AND LOADS OF LUCK!! To be frank, India will never let the cycling co-exists anymore ... still we do love cycling :-)
