A lot of the words for both english and german come from the same germanic "roots", so the languages sound very similar. That's why when a person who doesn't know german (me:)) hears someone speaking german, it sounds similar enough to english that you get the gist of what they're saying, but different enough that the english speaker doesn't *quite* understand.

My early experience with speaking German (in school) is similar to Ranboo's: I thought we were supposed to have an English class, so when the German teacher walked into a class and started speaking, my first thought was "WHAT IS HER ACCENT!?" I was so confused because I could kind of understand it but at the same time it didn't make any sense.
