ALL Nikke were humans, Mass produced Nikke were just humans without a strong personal ego allowing them to be shamed in to a mass produced form by the manufacturer rather then choose one for themselves with their own mental image of their own ideal self.

Of all the world building exposition this game gives the players. Nikkes being former humans was never explained explicitly for me. In my play through, it was hinted a couple times before just being brought up in casual conversation as though your character already knows. It gave me whiplash too

Yeah, a lot of world building is buried in relics, bond stories, side quests, and events.

Mass Produced Nikke most of time not even deserved being turn into one. Its just cheaper for ppl who decide then making Nikke with unique body and personality (also they need easy to control cannon fodder). And most of of scientists who are behind selection are heartless bastards. Those that end as unique Nikke was extremely lucky.
