As someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder it is always terrifying to see how people will react to this movie. Because unfortunately as much as people say "It's obviously not real, no one is going to compare you to that" people really do. We've had so many friends panic when I say I'm dissociating and ask if they need to leave because this movie was the only exposure they have to DID. There are no "evil alters" and every alter has the singular purpose of keeping the body and the system safe. Sometimes they dont understand the best way to do that and have conflicting thoughts. The best way to describe it is that you shatter a plate on the ground, no singular piece is the "original" piece. Each of those pieces has a trauma that is kept separate so they can all live on a day to day basis. TW for this next bit. For example, we have an alter called Arlow who handles our car crash trauma. This means that if another alter has to get in the car and drive somewhere they can, because they have no memory of the trauma. But if we're in the car and we hear tires screeching it can trigger her out (like how Kevin is triggered by the use of his full name). Thank you guys for not demonising DID within the context of this movie, its very refreshing to see people keeping it separate. It is very well portrayed (other than the beast, kidnapping, etc) by James McAvoy as each alter being a completely different person. Unfortunately i think thats why so many people cant tell where the line is, because he portrays it all in such a real way its hard to tell when it goes into the "fantastical". Long story short people with DID are far more likely to continue to be victims of abuse. We're not scary, the REAL horrors are what causes Dissociative Identity Disorder to occur. The awful traumas inflicted on children that cause a shatter of the mind.
@justarandomveryintelligent8934 Жыл бұрын
For me the second you see Bruce Willis on screen as David Dunne talking about Mr. Glass you're supposed to recontextualize the whole film as existing in a super hero universe. For me that means the talk about DID sufferers that have alters who can see and alters who are blind, manifesting diabetes in alters etc, thats the non realism.Thats the stuff you throw out of the equation. I also never saw The Horde as particularly evil even though they kidnapped people. They're just trying to protect Kevin the only way they know how. They just decided the best way to do that was at the expense of other people. I think the only big mistake in terms of the portrayal of DID is that they waited until the end of the movie to reveal that we've been in a superhero universe the whole time and I think because the audience has spent so long thinking this meant to be a realistic film that the end reveal comes too late to properly contextualize the realism and lack thereof in the film, All that being said, a lot of people don't think that deeply about movies and what they're actually saying about their subject matter. I don't blame the film for people's perception of DID so much as I blame a lack of media literacy on the part of some members of the audience.

@creative2716 Жыл бұрын
@ohcdoe Your input is well received (I speak for myself only). I didn't realize how little I actually know about DID, other than tv & movies & KZbin portrayals. I am sure they are less than accurate most of the time. I promise myself I will become more knowledgeable about DID. It is horrible the terrible things people do to others. I hope your trauma is less as an adult, I'll pray for your childhood self. The human mind is a complicated thing. Pertaining to the movie: I saw this when it was newly released, many years ago, in the theater. I remember being so freaked out at one point in the movie that I screamed out loud!! Very embarrassing! No one seemed to mind but ME. That said, the actors were exceptional. The caring, informed nature of the psychiatrist surprised me most. She certainly put herself in vulnerable situations, that was hard to believe. Regarding your reactions: Thank you. I never really thought about it before, but M. Night does center his movies around mental health a lot. I seem to like his movies less, now that you pointed that out. There is enough stigma around mental health without a false narrative to warp our feelings and behaviors. Good movie review.

OH BOY I have a channel you'll like. These two guys called Cinema Therapy actually did a comparison between this movie and Moon Knight and how they handled DID. One guy is a professional licensed therapist and the other is a licensed filmmaker. They ultimately came to the conclusion that Split is a good movie, but definitely not a good source of psychology. Moon Knight while also having good writing is also more accurate to the whole thing of DID and more considerate of the audience who may have it. They even say the therapy scene in Moon Knight was good, even if it was a magical hallucination. They're a really wholesome duo and if you loved how this video reacted to this movie, I have a feeling you'll adore these guys

I love The Village because the twist you expect doesn't come and it's totally different in the end. M. Night does such an amazing job with twist endings.

McAvoy gave a masterclass on characterization in this one

I legit started crying the moment her abuse and trauma were realized and that The Beast showed her that she was so much stronger because of what she endured. That she WAS pure because only the pure get broken. So powerful

It's kinda similar to what happens in the movie The Menu (also starred by Anya), she is saved because she was different from the other.

James McAvoy is absolutely mesmerising in this film, like you can't believe your eyes. The entire film could easily have failed hard or ended up looking comedic, but he more than nailed the role, he took it to the next level. Not only that, the cinematography by Mike Giolakis is amazing as well (he also did It Follows, US, and the series Servant). I highly recommend you watch Glass as well. This whole trilogy is very underrated!

The Bruce Willis appearance at the end was a shock, because what people miss now (when we can stream the trilogy back to back) is this came 16 YEARS after Unbreakable and was not hyped as a sequel. I cant think of another movie that waited 16 years for a follow up.

Tron Legacy?

@@WoodysPickle oh, good catch. That was 28 years between the original and the sequel. Butt split is a much better sequel
I don’t know why McAvoy didn’t get nominated for an Oscar. A performance that strong deserves recognition. …change of subject… you have probably heard of that movie that came out this about the A.I. doll “Megan”. The original film was called “Morgan”, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the A.I. living person. Megan was such a slap in the face to the whole cast and crew of “Morgan”. I really suggest you check her out in that. It was the first film that I saw her in and WOW! What an introduction!

Arguably The Sixth Sense had way more mainstream cultural impact, but Split imo is up there for best Shyamalan movie, if only for McAvoy's acting. Glass fell flat for me sadly, but i can't deny that Shyamalan has no problem of going for his vision, for better or worse. At the very least it's always interesting to see what exactly he's come up with.

When I watched this, I had no idea it was connected to Unbreakable and I remember having thoughts of wanting a sequel to Unbreakable. When the song began playing about a second before Bruce Willis appears, I figured it out and was so psyched lol especially because I figured it out by the song that plays only at the end of Split and throughout Unbreakable.

Really loved you 2 addeessing the "oh i wouldve done this" complaint that people often have in movies that have insane situations that in all actually no one knows how theyd react until they are forced to.

Boys and girls, get ready because here comes one of the best performances in cinema, from the expressive master, James McAvoy. The film is very good, but James' performance is the icing on the cake.

Timestamp 20:34. The gentleman on the computer that the doctor is speaking with is M. Night Shyamalan. He usually has a short or small cameo in each one of his films.

James also worked on his subtle body postures and movements, to help change the overall stature of each personality.
