I agree completely. I saw some people critiquing the Sue scenes a bit for being hypersexual and being a bit uncomfortable which is the point. Her Pump It Up scenes are supposed to be at 11 when it comes to the male gaze. That's supposed to be as uncomfortable to watch as the body horror elements. It's all symbolic and ties in together so beautifully. I could talk about this movie all day.

As a therapist, this is a fantastic depiction of what body anxiety and eating disorders are like for many people. The internal war between self and idealized self, self-rejection and hoped for acceptance, it's all there. A great way of helping people understand what people go through while also offering a sense of solidarity that those who suffer are not alone. Obviously it's not a perfect metaphor but, dare I say it, the substance of it is entirely there.

Excellent point. Elizabeth also knows that Sue is gonna eventually be passed over and kicked out without any respect just as Elizabeth was but she’s ignoring that for what she wants in the moment. @benbooth27833 күн бұрын
This is primarily what I took from the movie.
@josephirizarry5195Ай бұрын
Elisabeth and Sue are ONE consciousness but are two entities/egos. The movie shows you and tells you several times that they are one. Elisabeth is the one sabotaging herself when she is Sue. The film even shows Elisabeth going back into her own body when Sue first switches back (the man on the motorcycle). There wouldn't be a point to take The Substance if you weren't actually experiencing it. Elisabeth is living as Sue, not going to bed for a week.
@jpmonto01Ай бұрын
Agreed. The amount of peole thinking Elisabeth isn't enjoying it. Its like having two Avatars or Skins. You essentially have to live both lives equally and nothing negative would happen. Then terminate the expirence whenever you want with no damage. That's the moral of the movie that people just want to ride out the expirence in the young body at the expense of the old body which includes degenerating the mind.
@diandriasmith889Ай бұрын
Yeah, if Elizabeth actually had any love/respect for herself, Sue would not have taken advantage of the original body in the way she did. It wasn't another person taking advantage; it was the fact that she didn't care enough about herself, especially in her aged body, to fight for herself. What a sad, sad mess.
@lanagievski1540Ай бұрын
This. Elizabeth also clearly recognised the motorcyclist which is why she was stunned in her tracks over his reaction. They’re both being controlled/experienced by Elizabeth but she gets so caught up in it that the personalities almost split off to a point because she’s fighting her own self for control.
@AlasEtéreasАй бұрын
@@lanagievski1540 I actually think only their memories transfer throught their bodies, but not really their contiousness. When she met the nurse guy in his original version he says "has she started to eating you away?" meaning it happened to his younger version as well abusing of the matrix. I actually don't think they are the same, because theorically, if you're cloned, your clone version is not you. I think the ending further displayed the message of the film. She was so obsessed in her own looks, even when she's literally just a puddle and above her has the perfect beautiful sky and palm trees to look at before she dies, she doesn't appreciate the beauty of the world (the palm trees and stars) but so obsessed in fame and her own looks her last thought was her loved by the paparazzi. It was a true tragedy. Even in her last moment she was still not appreciating the world right in front of her that's deeper but instead the ideal of who she is

It's never a surprise to her. What happens is her reaction to what she did. Like eating a tub of ice cream the night before, then waking up and hating yourself for doing it. So, it wasn't her clone taking from her. It was her in her younger body taking and just shrugging off what it would do to her older self. Like how we live it up when we're young with little regard for what it will do to us in the long run. Then we get old and feel the consequences and we hate our younger selves for doing that.

i love how this movie is so intentionally goofy and silly and kinda stupid but it does it in such an intelligent way that it can be all of those things while also being heartbreaking and real

YAY! Let's gooooo! Nikki&Steven have the best chemistry. real underrated gem of this film: an incredibly cartoonish Dennis Quaid. Who knew?

Steven´s face is priceless in the last moments of the movie.... ahahahahah The definition of Horror is not just scaring us. Theres a misconception of the meaning of horror in movies. Horror is the main category... than theres subgenres... This movie is body horror. Body horror is supposed to disgust us. One of those examples is the fly (1986). It doesnt scare, but we feel disgust. What happen to baby jane is a example of horror movie, but it doesnt scare us.. its on the subgenre of pyshcological horror. Not every horror is designed to scare...

awards shows rarely acknowledge horror but thankfully the substance seems to be getting a lot of nods and it seems pretty likely demi moore will be nominated for best actress at the oscar’s which would be huge!

She is stealing time from herself though. As in literally. Just as phone guy keeps reminding her. They look different, but the conscience is getting transferred,so they are one person. Think of it as when you have a sudden boost of motivation to do something, but the next day , it is so hard to get out of bed, that cake looks so good, the work seems so daunting, we can start tomorrow.Two “yous”,one harming the other, and when you go back to being motivated you think what the hell is wrong with me, I should’ve started sooner

Commentary on aging in hollywood, our obsession with beauty especially women's beauty, plastic surgery for the purpose of looking younger, loving yourself, obsessing with the past, self esteem, etc. However what i loved the most is that its not complicated the messaging and thematic elements are right on your face and I fucking love that, not every thematically rich movie has to be complicated, sometimes simplicity and spelling out to me exactly what you are trying to say is whats appropritate and they did it perfectly in this movie imo 😀😀

It is not a new genre. It is CALLED BODY HORROR. Check out some David Cronenberg films. THE FLY, SCANNERS, VIDEODROME..... there are many great Japanese BODY HORRORS, as well. My favorite is TETSUO: THE Ironman.

Haven’t even started yet but Thumbs Up just for watching this and I am really glad to see more people doing so. Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid all deserve Golden Globe and Oscar Nominations, but especially Moore. And the movie as a whole!

i haven't even seen the entire movie and it's already on my top list. lol. for example, the shots of Sue's face, when she's panicking in the elevator, are just brilliant. Demi Moore's acting is great, and so is Margot Qualley's, and Dennis Quaid's. awesome creature design - well thought out, and completely unhinged. the list goes on. great movie!!

With all due respect, I completely disagree with Steven on this film not being horror. It's body horror of the Cronenberg variety. Horror doesn't mean or guarantee jump scares or terror; horror deliberately tries to invoke fear by exploiting peoples' phobias. How that fear is manifested depends on the individual. Horror is vast and wide. Its spectrum is like no other movie genre, flooded with a seemingly limitless variety of subgenres. Just because you, yourself, didn't get spooked doesn't mean it wasn't horror. Respectfully 😅

The way I see this movie is that it's more than a horror movie but a body horror film kind of like The Fly (2005) where like almost the entire movie it's not going to show any scary but it will show you like getting uncomfortable ideas and when that 3rd act happens the horror shows in the most disgusting horrifying way as possible that's how I see it.
