My version will have to do me for another few years before it gets replaced by this new beast. I am impressed by the integration of the TC. I do like to put a 1.4TC on my current 400 but it is a bit of a slow process and not one I could just do for a "quick" shot. Cant wait to see what you can get from this lens. @MattIrwinPhotography3 жыл бұрын
I am guessing the 2.3 is 4k, pixel for pixel, from the middle of the sensor ... when you have 45 - 46 MP does that make sense .... : ) 4K being 8.3MP, DX is almost 20MP ... and the direct pixel for pixel readout would make it super easy, if they wanted to, they could give us DX 120 FPS and 2.3 crop 120 in firmware I suspect. Hi Matt, a wildly gorgeous lens you've got here, and there are probably many professional Nikon photographers who would like to own it including my friend a professional Nikon photographer through many years and certainly not a fanboy (has now the Nikon Z9 and has ordered another one). But as he says remember also to come up with the less good things when you come with your review, because that he also needs as a Nikon photographer. As he says, there is no perfect lens or for that matter camera, for there will always be compromises. P.S. But I/we are unsure if it's okay to write this to you, as it may still be understood negatively, but it's more just a little advice to make your channel even more professional and get more KZbin followers .. .. Cheers from the two of us in the cold north

Good video Matt. I enjoy all of your videos. The below rant is NOT an attack on you or anyone else. But... that myth about putting a camera into crop mode and gaining additional "reach" is just that, a myth. It's not true, it's never been true, and it'll never be true... Take any camera/lens combo, put it on a tripod and focus on an object 100 yards/meters away. Take a picture. Then without changing any settings other than putting the camera in whatever crop mode you want, take another picture of the same object at the same distance. Then transfer both pictures to your computer and open them as layers in photoshop. Put the crop mode picture at the top of the stack. Make sure both pictures are centered. Then turn off and back on the visibility of the crop mode picture several times. You won't see any change in size of the object you focused on... All you have managed to do by putting the camera in crop mode is crop the sides/top/bottom in the camera, you didn't "zoom in" or gain any more "reach". You might as well just crop it in photoshop where you can use the crop to change/enhance the composition. Before anyone starts flaming and disputing me, do the test and if you are honest about it, you'll agree with me 100%. Because the idea of gaining "more reach" or "zooming in" by putting the camera (any camera) in crop mode is an illusion. I've read on Nikon's website that it does, and that is flat out wrong. Look at the stats for any camera listed from any manufacturer and you'll see that putting any camera in DX mode results in a smaller picture which only "mimics" narrower focus angle of a DX camera. It doesn't stretch out the image to the same size as full resolution FX size, it just crops in on the usable area of the sensor resulting in a cropped picture output. The test is this. Use the same camera/lens mounted on tripod without moving it. Put in full manual mode. focus on a building or other stationary object about 100 yards/meters away with the position locked focus on the door of the building, or a large window. Take 1 picture at full FX resolution. Change ONLY the sensor area to DX and take another picture without moving the camera. Load both pictures in photoshop in a stack with the DX picture on top of the stack, with both pictures centered and aligned. If you do the test honestly, you'll not see any size difference in the door/window of the building. You'd be better off just shooting in FX mode all the time then cropping in photoshop so you can adjust the composition a little bit.
@MattIrwinPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, I understand all of what you are saying. I suppose I think people watching understand that it is '35mm eqv.' which I often say or write somewhere. I suppose we live in a strange time where if we put this lens on a Z50 or ZFC then they can only get the 1.5 crop (DX crop) outcomes. And the entire conversation about the lens is in DX. Forced crop. Often when I am shooting a far away subject, and I simply want to save space, I will shoot in DX knowing I won't need the FX version. Save space and saving processing time. I often do this at events or functions, to get extra reach. Very easy when a subject is not moving and all you want is to be closer and to not do that extra work in post. Also in 4K video this crop is actually real. We still get the same resolution of 4K wether at FX or DX, so it is effectively a zoom. And when I am talking about all this stuff I am encompassing both use cases. Stills and video. So yes I understand when I say 400mm DX is 600mm eqv. I understand it is a 400mm file cropped to appear somewhat like a 600mm (in still). But not exactly the same. I understand. : ) And I believe most people who follow this channel would also understand. :) Thanks so much for raising the point, perhaps I should make a video about it? What do you think? Cheers Matt :)

@@MattIrwinPhotography Thank you Matt. I realize that in video mode where the output is 4k whether in DX or FX mode that the extra reach of the crop factor is real. But for stills it isn't, and most people don't understand that. IF, when putting the camera in crop mode the resulting image would be stretched to the FX size for output, then extra reach would be gained. But, since it doesn't do that, it just outputs an image that's been cropped/trimmed on all sides, the objects in the image will be identical size so there is no real zoom factor. I really wish it would work. Then my 70-300 lens would become 91-390mm on my D7200, which is a DX camera that can be switched to 1.3X 'crop mode'. I kept hearing on different youtube channels, and read it on Nikon's website about putting the camera in crop mode for "that little bit of extra reach"... so I tried it. And it didn't work... All I ended up with was a bunch of smaller images with the subjects of the images the same size as when I shot in full resolution mode. So I did the test I described above and got the results I described above. You have to use the same camera to test it for FX vs DX. Or, you could use a FX camera with the same/similar sensor size sensor as a DX camera such as D7200 compared to crop mode in Z6 where the D7200 files are 6,000 x 4,000 resolution, and the Z6 files are 6,048 x 4,024 in FX mode and 3,936 x 2,624 in DX mode. As long as an "apples to apples" comparison is made, not an "apples to oranges" comparison which would be comparing a D850 which has a resolution of 8,256 x 5,504, to a D500 which has a resolution of 5,568 x 3,712. Since the D850's resolution is 2.24 times greater than the D500's, the objects in the picture will naturally be 2.24 times larger than those in an image taken on the D500. A large megapixel sensor camera compared to a small megapixel sensor camera is not a true, or fair, comparison. I once had an online "debate" with a guy who kept trying to use the D850 VS D500 argument to "prove" that putting a camera in crop mode actually increased the reach, but the only thing he proved was that he didn't know what he was talking about.... If you would make a video showing how it works it would be great! It would be helpful to a lot of us. There is a lot of people out there that "think" they are going to get a larger image of a small bird by putting their camera into "crop" mode and all the get is the illusion of a larger bird because the sides/top/bottom of the images they take are cropped off in the camera instead of cropping them off in photoshop! Thanks again Matt! I look forward to seeing a video explaining just what happens when a camera is put in crop mode and the myths about it dispelled.

Awesome. Im seriously thinking of trading my 600F4 FL in for this.

Yeah well you would have a 400 2.8 and a 560 F4 - a lot lens 🚀 😄

@@MattIrwinPhotography already been figuring out focal and aperture with the TC and an external 1.4. Lots of options in 1 lens

It depends on what you do. A bare lense without tc is always better. It you use a tc with the 600mm, the 400mm will be too short. I am waiting on the new 600mm.

Photojournalism, very subtle lens....for sure you can blend

Suppose it depends where you are reporting from, maybe a war zone ... :) Then I think as much reach as you can get.

Wawoo ,,.... Enjoy it.. But, I have few things to say .... 1. What for you and for the 400 ? As I understand you're not a nature photographer ... Which leads me to the next wondering ... I guess you purchased it by yourself .... Which means you own a big like to your subscribers ... Because if not them you wouldn't buy it or were you ? .
