This song may even be generally safe sonically for the metalcore scene. But it's not safe for Poppy. Her career still is 60% based and influenced by pop music bc of that her fan base does like pop music - just like Poppy (New Way Out is very pop influenced). In addition, you have industrial fans, her heavy stuff fans, etc, etc. All of her 6 albums have totally different sounds, and this has created a very diverse set of expectations of the public. I don't think she even cares about pleasing metalheads or anyone, but I don't think this can't be considered "safe" if we think about how amplified her audience is.

Poppy is an extremely beautiful artist and human being who has so many special and positive messages to share with us as her audience. I am absolutely amazed by her brilliance as a musician and her versatility as a vocalist. Knowing about the terrible hardships that she experienced with her previous label and former manager, I am so glad that the metal community has given her a platform to express her authentic artistry, free from the pressures to conform to others' perceptions of what she "should be." As a metalhead goth, I absolutely welcome Poppy with open arms. Her album "I Disagree", which marked her transition into metal and alternative rock music was absolutely healing for me because I was experiencing a tremendous amount of challenges because of depression and bullying and it came out during a time in which I had felt completely at odds with my identity as a person because I was consistently being shamed and mistreated because of my choice to continue being darkly-inclined and expressing myself freely through my manner of dress. It came out exactly during a time in which I needed it the most and it saved me from so much suffering. It was because of Poppy that I was inspired to find hope again and it was because of her that I was inspired to become myself again. I abosolutely do believe that she is taking risks in her music, just that she is progressively exploring more nuances to her own sound, now that she is completely autonomous in her artistic vision and she is clearly so adept at building up heavy music atmospheres, and her cover of "Spit" by Kittie truly shows her genius as a metalcore vocalist.

Poppy has realized her potential, and is now beginning her journey into what we metal fans need. It might be rough for a little bit, but she's at least making music that doesn't sound like everyone else. I think she'll only improve as she narrows down her niche, but she clearly has range. I'd like to see her monopolize HER sound, and then do some crazy sh*t with collabs. Just my opinion, but I'm loving it. Her and Pretty Wild are doing amazing things.

you're 100% right about how safe it is, as much as it is good. and you know this is all very intentional, since she's been working with very talented people who know how to experiment.

I kinda like the harsh transitions and immediate full start to the song, it feels very whiplashy and kind of goes a long with the theme of the song. While it feels very "safe" for metalcore, this is different for her and is definitely her riskiest song. I think she's just starting and and will eventually come into her own vibe for metal. She's being very experimental in terms of dipping into different genres. As she does more stuff in this style, it will evolve. But as for this song, if feels safe yes, but its still very good.

It’s odd because I remember when she did metal songs like “X” she always did harsh transitions. Overtime I noticed them less in her albums. I can’t help but think this is like a callback to those previous songs, just more upgraded sounding wise. :)

To me, it feels like she is still discovering her sound in this space. There is not really a cohesion in the song. The parts on their own are good but it needs some more confidence in her own sound. And they are separated parts and not feeling like it's one song. But finding your sound, your rhythm and your confidence in that sound and rhythm can take years, so I have fate.

Man that was a rollercoaster. From Slipknot vibes, to Spiritbox type choruses, To a bring me to the horizon type of break down... This is definitely metalcore lmao I'm not an avid Poppy listener so I had no idea she was going hard these days. I only really heard her feature in the track with Bad Omens
