Notes a 12th apart create this weird harmonic effect when the top note is played very softly: an early example can be found also in Saint-Saens Piano Concerto 5, in the second movement.

@@EmilianoManna The 12th is the 3rd harmonic in the harmonic series, and by doubling overtones in such fashion you obtain a sound not unlike that of an organ with the mixture stops pulled (the mixture stops double the upper harmonics). Indeed, Saint-Saëns does not only double the 3rd harmonic in his piano concerto, but also the 5th, omitting the 2nd and 4th harmonics, which double at the octave and double octave, respectively. Seeing as Saint-Saëns was an organist, he most likely got the idea for this effect from the aforementioned mixture stops. Another, more fully realised example of this effect may be found in Ravel's Boléro, after letter 8. The melody is in the horn (1st harmonic), while the celesta doubles the 2nd & 4th and two piccolos the 3rd & 5th upper harmonics. The horn is marked mf, the celesta p (doubling in octaves) and the piccolos pp. The 3rd and 5th partial deviate slightly from equal temperament, so I suppose he gave them to the piccolos because they are always out of tune anyway. This passage is sometimes cited as an example of polytonality, but it is really more of an effect than genuine polytonal music.

@@nss4472 Если вам приходилось слушать много музыки на органе то наверно заметите что тембр пианино именно в этом месте напоминает некоторые мягкие певучие органные тембры, это не просто так, у органа есть возможность подключить регистр играющий на дуодециму выше вместе с основным тоном, и получается буквально другое звучание, почти как будто другой инструмент. С точки зрения обертонов дуодецима от основной ноты это не что иное как третий обертон, а обертоны наш мозг склонен склеивать в один новый звук с новой окраской (именно обертоны в различных своих пропорциях то есть громкостях придают скрипке звук скрипки, пианино звук пианино, а органу звук органа), и неудивительно что человеку в комментах показалось будто там звук пианино похож на звучание какого-то синта, в целом если вы любите орган то можете узнать в этом тембре и орган тоже)) Суть в том что это необычный акустический эффект, но он реален, у него есть физическое обоснование, так работают обертоны, если вы например попросите пианиста сыграть соль ля си до в первой октаве на форте, и скрипача ре ми фа# соль в третьей октаве на пиано, получится что их звуки смешаются опять-таки в этот необычных тембр, то есть даже не обязательно чтобы инструмент был один и тот же, еще можно позвать второго скрипача чтобы он сыграл си (в 3-й октаве) до# ре# ми (в 4-й октаве) на пианиссимо - эти ноты соответствуют 5-му обертону, то есть си 3-й октавы это пятый обертон для соль 1-й октавы, и так далее, и эффект нового тембра будет еще более ярким)
