One thing I really respect about Kapustin is that he was a huge advocate of his own work. His absolute success at that is one of the reasons his music has survived.

@@ninjaassassin27 trevorguy is correct, they are all studio recordings. Kapustin said in an interview in 2000: "I don’t like to play on stage, but I do like to record". He also said in the same interview; "But to be famous isn’t important. I don’t want to become famous." Despite that, to an extent you are right that he did advocate for his own work; "I make improvisations better than Bruckner!" But to say that in his lifetime he has 'absolute success' is absolutely not true. He was unknown in Russia his whole life; "Even if he is only now becoming known over here, does the music have something of a reputation in Russia? Kapustin shakes his head: ‘Nobody knows it."

0:53 is already the second theme, actually the second theme group. I would say: 0:05 *Theme Group 1*, Theme 1 0:23 Theme 2 0:37 Transition 0:53 *Theme Group 2*, Theme 1 1:07 Theme 2 1:25 Theme 3 1:46 Cadence Theme

I agree with another commenter here; what you're calling "Episode" (00:53) I would call the second subject, and what you're calling "Second Subject" (01:25) I would call some kind of end of exposition / cadence / outro theme.
@BryanSaylor1
@BryanSaylor1 Ай бұрын
0:53 is theme 2 because it starts in B (ish) in the exposition and starts in E in the recap. This is textbook sonata form modulation. Kapustin is a pure classical music composer and follows the established practices very strictly despite the jazzy harmonies. EXPOSITION Intro: 0:00 First Theme (E Major): 0:05 Transition: 0:40 Second Theme (B Major/Mixolydian): 0:53 Closing Section: 1:25 Repeat of Exposition: 2:06 DEVELOPMENT 3:58 RECAPITULATION First Theme (E Major): 6:31 Transition: 6:55 Second Theme (E Major/Mixloydian): 7:12 Closing Section: 7:42 Coda: 8:35

Whenever I hear these I wish the accents were punchier. Could be slowed down *barely* to make those come out. A lot of those are what make the idiom, not just the harmony.
