First time I see someone playing the Original version (1838), S. 140 of these studies. Respect to the man, cause it's a crazy bet to do it live considering how crazy hard these pieces are. Way harder than their counterpart done 13 years later.

@@lunar.6091 when you say no. 3, I'm assuming you mean the first thing played in the video. The 1838 version is probably 2x harder, could easily be more than that. If you look at sheet music of it you'd understand. The jumps and just the intervals between the incredibly quick notes combined with the right hand playing seemingly three parts at once. The right hand in the friska of hungarian rhapsody no. 2 is comparable to the right one in this, although this one seems more difficult based on the fact it as to make bigger jumps/play more notes

WOW, that's great!!! Until the moment I watched these 3 videos I thought it's impossible a human to play these etudes (without taking drugs :)). But this really surprised me amazingly. I don't know how much time he has prepared for these pieces, but the demonstates unhuman perfection.I wonder what was the purpose of Liszt to writing these etudes. It's good that he has revised them later.

Liszt probably wrote these for himself as showpieces. Realising that other people wanted to play them too, he made them easier as they weren't as good as him (or had smaller hands). Lol.

I agree completely, but I'd conjecture that this is less known because many fewer people can play it. Not because of a lack of technical ability in pianists (which can be developed), but in this, there are parts where your hands need to reach an octave and a half (which cannot be developed easily).

no, not really actually... the version that Valentina Lisitsa plays is really good. Everybody seems to like it in the video :P But I'm not saying this is BAD or anything, I'm just saying that I don't really enjoy this version, apparently, the original one. Most pianist play the modern version, so I got influenced by it, and now I listen to it more.

He played the fourth etude in chordal arpeggios. It is the most difficult etude of Franz Liszt and one of the most difficult etudes ever written in the 19th century. Only Mereaux's "Bravura" can compare.

There is no "real tempo". The original caprice is something like twice the speed, which would be absurd. 50-60 bpm is reasonable and that's how fast Petrov plays here.
