Nikolai was a sweetheart, I saw him in the 2010s at a minor league game. He was signing autographs with the Iron Sheik at a scheduled advertisement. Unfortunately, everyone wanted to see the Sheik, and no one paid much attention to Nikolai. I shook his hand and thanked him as my father got a kick out of him back in the day. He was nothing but a gentleman!

These people from these eastern block countries, or central/ South America etc, back 50-60+ years ago, came up hard, working hard just to survive and lived very meager lives. They learned humility and gratitude from the time of their birth on up. We Americans are spoiled and lazy, it’s too easy for us. That’s how I see it

I remember seeing this guy (if it's the same one I'm thinking of) in the Mid-South area around 1983-84. I remember being so impressed with his size. He was about 6 ft 8 and about 325 pounds. I watched him take 225 pounds on the bench press and pop it up and down 20 times. Get up, talk to somebody, go back and do it again. At that time I could have done 225-20 times myself, but the last four five I would have been grunting and straining. He did it like it was nothing.

I first met Nicolai in MidSouth... I was there the night he lost the "LOSER LEAVES FOREVER" match... and I got to work with him again in WWF(E). Always a gentleman, a pleasure to be around and, like DiBiase and other Watts guys, he'd introduce me to many of the other boys in the locker room and the house show agents to let them know you were smart to the business, they knew you, your work ethic and, (above all else), trusted you. I was never out of work long between tours unless I wanted to be thanks a good rep.

Love to hear how Nikolai has such great respect for Bruno Sammartino. You can see him infer how he feels about drugs that became prevalent in wrestling. Steroids specifically. I also agree with him how wrestling is now actually taking a back seat to the other stuff.

One of your best interviews Hannibal. Nikolai Volkoff was one of the most experienced wrestlers we knew of. He talked about everyone. He used his language skills to interact with many of the wrestlers that didn’t speak English, very interesting. I wish he would have taken his medicine and listened to traditional doctors more.

I remember Nikolai when I watched wrestling as a kid from like 1982-1989. He was one of the greatest. I used to go to the Boston garden to watch the matches and I met him once. He was the biggest guy I've ever seen. Wrestling today is a joke, the guys don't even look like wrestlers. It's a shame.

This was one big dude. I was at the Spectrum one night in Philadelphia when Mr. Volkoff was wrestling Bruno Sammartino. Very short match, may have been the last one of the night. Nikolai grabbed the ring bell, Bruno disarmed him and wacked him on the head with it. As Vince would say , "For the cover!"1-2-3 over.

@@TheHannibalTV I remember his later interviews where he talked about living healthy and still wrestling at his age. So it was surprising that he wound up dying not long later at 70, which is actually a bit younger than the average male lifespan. I think that means he might have not made it as long as he did if he lived like his peers in the business.
