9:13 Could it really be motion blur? It says 1/1250s! Also, at 9:45 you say the 105 and 58 are shooting darker than the 85. Well, the 85 is 1/1250s and the 105 and 58 are 1/1600s. Other settings remain the same.

Really good video. As much as I was trying to evaluate with all things taken into consideration, the darkness of the 105mm shots made it hard to favor it. I do love the larger bokeh, but I have to agree with other poster who said the 105mm shots looked flat. Between the 85 & 58... I really liked them both, and went back & forth on the 2 lenses. Perhaps a cool next video would be comparing all the photos after you've PP'd them & get them looking their best? Cheers on the great video!

Yeah thats a good idea, I usually just compare the RAWs, and show the edited pics during the video. Yeah? I dont know why the 105 1.4E shots look darker, all was the same auto ISO, aperture wide open, settings? AWB too, metering was matrix for all lenses as well, kinda weird. I even updated the Nikon Df to the latest firmware and latest distortion data for August 2016.

mate, despite the compression and sharpness, the 105 f1.4 produced flat images. the 85 did much better. you could look at the 105 f2 dc. i am confident you will like the results it produces.

I used to have the 180mm 2.8 , loved that lens as well, I tried out the 105 F2, and 135 F2, awhile back , need to get my hands on one again to try out :) I do want to get away from the AF-D nikons, too much CA at times and slight haze, but then again if you always post process your images like I do, it shouldn't matter, thanks for the comment :)

The compression and the "flatness" are the same thing. That's exactly what some people love about shooting 105mm at f/1.4. If you don't like it, you can stop down, or use a wider focal length.

The video is instructive but this is reason why you don’t shoot video in AF on a camera. The camera for video one should manually focus, is more artistic and fancier.

I would choose the Nikon D750, just for the battery life, and they way it feels in my hands, I really don't like the SONY A7 series, battery life was very terrible for me :(

I have the Sigma ART 135mm f/1.8, fantastic bokeh, my only lens that is not a Nikon (and I have many lenses) because Nikon does not offer a good 135mm.

I liked all the 85 shots more. Might be the better exposure. I rented the 105 1.4 and it was sharp (shockingly sharp!) but I also noticed some underexposure - I think it has poor light transmission due to so many elements. Looking to upgrade my 105 F2 DC. Think I will keep it around but add the 85mm.

Really nice video.I personally prefer the 85mm as length...If i go for more than 100mm i'll go to 135mm or 200mm...Now for outdoor shooting the speedlight produce like 0 light...Around 75w i think is the output,if you use a strobe over 500w than it doesn matter what lens you use,even a 50mm 1.8g could be awesome !

Great video but I think you should have shot with the same settings for every set, I noticed with the 105 you consistently shot at a higher shutter speed resulting in a darker image which it look more flat than it should be in comparison to the 85mm. If you run into this on accident however Lightroom has a feature to match the exposure between a selected set of frames, comes in super hand when I'm doing engagement shoots and sometimes accidentally adjust the shutter and end up with a couple darker/brighter images.

The 3d pop is far better with 58 followed by the 85, 105 has sharp edged bokeh and the model is rendered flat.

Of course the 3d pop increases as you go to a wider lens. There's even more 3d pop with a 20mm or a 15mm fisheye, and everything looks flatter and flatter as you go more telephoto. That's the nature of optics.

I would choose the classic 85 1.4 :) but if you shoot mostly outdoors then the 135 1.8 is great!

85mm give the more natural look, skin tone, color and face is better looking than on 105mm (give much wider face - and compression is too high)... My choice will be 85mm :) ....

I recently rented the 58/1.4 and 105/1.4E and comparing them to my 85/1.4g I came to the exact same conclusion as you. (The 58/1.4 producing interesting images, but it needed a +18 AF tuning which really put me off). Great review!

I'm indecisive. I have a 135mm 18 that is sharp, but I thought the 105mm 1.4 may be more convenient and I love a sharp lenses. My old 85 1.8 isn't as sharp anymore so I've been thinking about the 85mm 1.4. I tend to use the 85 and 35 the whole wedding. My sharp 135 is so long so, I barely use it, but I still wanna keep it because it's sharp. I'm thinking I'd use the 105 more because it isn't as far and it sounds like I could trust it during a ceremony.

Some people call the Nikon 105mm 1.4E a baby 200 f/2, since the bokeh is just so nice!! If your hardly using the 135 1.8 and its too long for you, I would get the Nikon 105 1.4E one of my favorite lenses, its very sharp!

@@GuamPhotography It's not a baby 200 F/2. It's not even in the same ballpark. It's the Ferrari of images. The 105 is a slightly longer 85mm. I shoot with a 35mm/85mm 1.4G, and a 200 F/2. Only three lenses you need. Better off with a used 200 F/2 than a 105mm 1.4.

The 105 F2 DC is a better portrait lens than any of those. It's not quite as sharp, but guess what? Extreme sharpness is undesirable in a portrait lens. Unless you like looking at skin pores, makeup edges, pimples, etc...women in particular hate to see all that stuff.

Yes thats true, we have gotten away from understanding that for a portrait lens, sharpness isn't that critical, but some do want to see a 3D pop, from a super sharp subject with a blurry background. I too don't care so much if the lens isn't as sharp, since I'm mostly a portrait shooter.

I have AF fine set to +20 on all my 3 D750's, and with that I can not be sure about focus accuracy, BUT still I am getting more accurate shots then 85mm provided. My 85mm was checked in factory, and it was good, friends 85mm also do lots of inaccurate shots. But if we are comparing them, 135mm gives softer image in a good way, I really enjoy feel of image , specially with portraits in good light (shade, chromatic aberration is terrible). of course, it's not that sharp as 85mm @f2. And if I compare it against 70-200 VR2 2.8, at close distance 135mm gives more magnification, compression, 70-200 have focal breathing problem. And 135mm have nicer bokeh, nicer colors, but softer look. 85mm, 70-200mm I am using for anything, landscapes, portraits, night, day .. but 135mm for me is strictly for portraits, and if model have some skin problem or wrinkles this is THE tool to use. :) But probably I should get it to warranty check, AF fine tune+20 isn't normal and I get out of focus shots quite a lot. In the end I would say it's extra lens. surly you can live without it. I dont know how long I will live without 85mm f1.4, but this time Sigma Art, if it is any good.

Thanks a lot for your response. I think I have to rent a 135mm f/2 DC lens and see for myself because some people rave about it as THE ultimate portrait lens in Nikon world while some say it is too soft, chromatic aberration is bad, focus is difficult. I understand that this is a difficult lens to use but I hope those who have mastered it are praising it to the sky. If it is truly the king of portrait lenses then I think I should work hard to learn to use it. Shall start with a rented lens... Thank you again.

the bokeh on the 105 is better, but i liked the face of the model better from the 85. it seems, judjing from your pictures, that the 105 makes the models face look more round, where the 85 makes the face a bit enlongated. i dont know how the models face looks in real life though, to make a better judjement. definately i like the 85.

Theoria Apophasis Sadly since this shoot I haven't had time to play around with the 105 1.4E more, I have a wedding to shoot in a couple of weeks, and probably one more portrait session before that, I need to play around with it some more, to see how I really feel about it and if this lens is for me, I do love shallow DOF and super blurry backgrounds, I do miss the Zeiss 135 1.8, rumor has it they are making a new E or A mount version of the lens.
