The Nikon AFS 180-400mm F4E TC1.4 FL ED VR is Nikon's first lens with a built in 1.4X teleconverter. I share my thoughts on the position of the teleconverter switch, how easy it is to use, and how it compares to my 200-400mm F4 and my 600mm F4 FL lenses. Is it worth it?

Great video and channel. You are correct, I was in Mara last month and noticed the 180-400 is widely used by Nikon shooters. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment! Since I have recorded this video, I have used the Z9 with the 180-400 for a lot of field sports and it is absolutely amazing. I love that I can easily increase my focal length with a flip of a switch and when players are further away. The face detection on the Z9 has made it so 99.9% of my shots are in focus. It is awesome.

Can't agree with you more, as I've been shooting the 180-400 since April of '21. Was shooting a D850 and F mounts. Moved to mirrorless, but kept the 180-400, as it is a phenomenal lens. Being a wildlife photographer, 85% of my shots are with the 180-400 lens, coupled with a Z9 and FTZ II. The images....spectacular !! Cheers.

Congrats on 180-400mm. A great buy. Thanks for the video, not much on this lens on YT.. find it strange... Considering this or 400mm f2.8 for soccer and can't decide between f4 and versatility or 2.8 blurred backgrounds.

Thanks for the comment Muhamed. I agree that it is strange that there isn't much about this lens on KZbin. It is one of the more difficult lenses to find second hand in my experience. I have used it for soccer a couple of times and the versatility is fantastic. I used to bring my 200-400mm and also my 600mm for shots further down the field but so far I just tend to use this lens.

Great video. I got it as well second hand to replace my trusty 200 400. For me its versatility is fantastic. I find as well that focusing is faster and that it is sharper that the previous version

Thanks so much for the comment Carlo. Yes - it is definitely fast! I would love to measure the difference somehow but I am not sure how to do that accurately. I agree that is is beautifully sharp which is something I could measure at some point.

"Next generation" would you be using Z glass.

Right now there isn't any Z lens that compares to the 180-400mm. Over time, I will add some Z glass. I usually purchase my equipment used so it may be a while before there are Z lenses at a price I am willing to pay.

Why dont you Upgrade to Z >> You have the camera >> I am the Other Way around I have 4 brilliant Z Lenses but only a Z7 camera and no funds to upgrade

Thanks for the comment Peter. I am sure there will be some Z lenses in my future. As I mentioned in the video, I purchase most of my equipment second hand and it will take some time for the Z lenses to get onto the used market at more reasonable prices. And right now the F lenses work amazingly well with my Z9 and my other cameras like my D850 and D500. Given the choice, I think I actually prefer a 180-400mm F4 instead of a Z 180-600mm F5.6-6.3 or a Z 100-400mm F4.5-5.6. I am not sure there is a Z lens that is comparable to the 180-400mm F4 right now.
