I have the 24-70 2.8 and I shoot wide open 90% for all around but for landscape it doesn't matter, get the F4 version. I've tried my old Nikon primes and this new Z glass just dominates in colours and resolution. We have enough Nikon haters out there, lets stick together.

I have the Z7 body and the z24-70mm f/4 s, z50mm f/1.8 s, and the z85mm f/1.8s. The z24-70mm f/4 s is absolutely stunning outdoors, for portraits and landscape. Shooting indoors or outdoors with low light does not produce great results. I'm not a professional photographer, but I do understand the exposure triangle, and even with full open aperture, you must significantly lower shutter speed and/or significantly increase the iso. I have found that I can shoot up to iso 2000 without, what I would call, significant noise. For daytime outdoors walk-around shooting, it is a great lens. It is very possible I am not skilled enough to shoot lower light images without getting so much noise. Also, I have found that for portraits, I absolutely love the z85mm f/1.8 s.
@echt11427 күн бұрын
You exaggerate the 1-stop differnce between f/2.8 and f/4. Also, if you go down to 2.8, you're hit with a depth of field penalty.

I have not used mine since purchasing the 24-200. I am happy the sharpness and picture quality on my Z6 and 6.3 is not a problem at the long end for me. Great review, James! Having used the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2, how do you find the 24-70 f/4 s lens in comparison? Do you feel that the extreme distortion correction of this S lens that is baked into the raw files of the Z system cameras, subtracts focal length especially at 24mm? I mean, is the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 wider at 24mm than this lens? And something last. Do you find it tricky to change lenses on the Z mount camera, outside in the wild and in harsh conditions in terms of the sensor getting much easier dust in it than to a DSLR?
@JamesBrewphoto3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! I think the Nikon is the better lens. It's sharper! Difficult to say for sure how the 24mm compares without having both at the same time but I think any difference will be neglible. I don't really find it that difficult to changes lenses out in the field. Hope that helps :-)

Seems you like this lens James despite some of the negatives on-line. Tell me; when you changed from DSLR to mirrorless, did you try any of your F lenses on the Z7, and in particular the 18-35. I saw your review of this lens earlier; I too have this lens which I use on my D850. I am just about to go mirrorless (Z7) and am wondering how the latter lens performs on the Z?
@JamesBrewphoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, I did not try the 18-35 on the Z7, I went straight for the native lens. I still feel the 18-35 is the best F mount wide angle but the 14-30 S is a superior lens in pretty much everyway. If you get the Z7 you absolutely should get the the 14-30 👍

I love that these lenses are getting lighter, and optically better at f4...and so does my back! :P
@dblissmn3 жыл бұрын
I think you're actually underselling that lens. If there's one mirrorless product I'm envious of, it's that -- there is no truly strong compact mid-range zoom for SLR cameras in Nikon. You can get the 24-120 to do similar things but you have to work much harder at it and you have to stop down in situations where you need detail right across the frame....and I've found the segment from 85 to 120 doesn't really deliver for landscape anyway. The f2.8 glass, even in mirrorless, is on the heavy side for backcountry photography, and the f4 is close to the f2.8 optically and actually a touch ahead of the best f2.8 for DSLR in this class, Nikon's f2.8 VR for F-mount. The lack of built-in VR is also a benefit; with VR/IS lenses, if you forget and remove the lens without at least shutting off the VR first or turning off the camera altogether, weird things happen to the optics that can take some time to iron themselves out. This is one big reason for IBIS and it's pretty clear in full-frame mirrorless that Nikon are only continuing with in-lens VR where it delivers a clear benefit over IBIS, in other words with telephoto glass.

Hi there James, thanks for this helpful video. I need a new lens for my Z6 at this focallength. I have everything above 50mm, but not the wideangled lens as a 24-70. Somtimes, a maximum of 10 times a year, I photograph gigs at pretty dark venues (metal-scene). So it's occasional use at darker settings. Is this f4 the right lens for me at those occasional dark venues, or do I realy need f2.8 or faster?
@JamesBrewphoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jurgen, it really depends on how occasional your dark location usage is. It may make sense to get the 24-70 f2.8 if its important to you, but if it really is a rare occurance, then maybe get a fast prime lens like a 35mm to accompany the 24-70 f4.

@c141charlie4 жыл бұрын
I’ll take the contrarian view here. Maybe expensive glass is a placebo. You spend big money on F2.8 glass, and your pictures look amazing. Or at least that’s what you talk yourself into. Then the anti-placebo, thinking F4 glass is sub-par because it’s inexpensive and therefore must be lacking in some regard. Perhaps this explains why I’m not impressed with this, or the 14-30. While they both produce very sharp images, the rendering is too clear and lacks depth, and character. Or at least that’s what I’ve talked myself into. My only basis for comparison is Leica glass which is admittedly 4x the price, and Sony/Zeiss/Tamron F2.8 glass which is closer in price to Nikon. The photography community needs a website that provides blind taste tests of images shot with different glass. Real images, not test photos of some chart in a laboratory. I have a feeling many people would go for cheaper glass. To me this blind comparison is the only way to break the placebo effect’s grip on lens snobs.

James, a nice review of a cracking lens. I've been one of your subscribers for a while but have seriously toyed with the idea of unfollowing you because of the way you pronounce the letters "TH". There are numerous examples in this video, as there are in most of your videos, of you using the words: free (should be three), fink (think), fousand (thousand) etc etc. I personally find it infuriating that you are unable to pronounce the English words correctly in what is clearly your mother tongue. TH should not be pronounced as an F. It must be confusing for your overseas followers, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it incredibly annoying to hear the English language incorrectly used. Apart from that, your videos are great, you give good practical opinions and I rate your views. Cheers
