Great review! I just bought the Nikon 40mm 2.8G lens yesterday, and what you say is to the point. It is a simple prime lens for shooting photos and film, and I think that it will do what I need it to do for shooting photography and film.

fair review... i have the 50mm 1.8d and vry much awesome for video and still.. love the bokeh..( but manual on my d5100) .. i like this 40mm too because i love close up nature photography...

deepak tomer, The 35mm and 40mm are near the same lens. The 40mm you can just get closer to a subject like insects and that also good for portraiture the 50mm wont do the macro shots the 50 is better for landscapes or portraiture. the 35mm wont get as close to a subject like the 40mm can so in my way of thinking 40mm and 50mm are the better 2 to get or one or the other. Both not that expensive fairly cheap and great lens.

Hi there! Good review. If You don't mind, I would like to ask You something. I have this lens since a few days and I noticed that Focus ring is not that "soft" like other lenses that I have (For example: Nikon 50mm 1.8). Is this normal? Thank You so much.

Nice video, mate. I have this lens and the 105mm and this my go to lens. It's not as sharp but the size makes it a lot more fun to use.

Have you tried the 50mm? I'm torn between which to get, did you have a preference if you've tried them both? I would use it mainly for macro photography and infant photography indoors.. so low light. If you have an opinion I'd love to hear it

Jess Rosenow both lenses would work very well but for what you are doing i would reccommend the 40mm :) hope this helps!

which should i pick between the 40mm f2.8 or the 35mm f1.8? i have heard that the 40mm is a lot sharper and that the bokeh is much nicer.

I would personally recommend the 40mm through they are all very good choices!

Yeah. It is very versatile as it has all the features of the 30mm and 50mm but is also a macro lens so it is also brilliant for nature and extreme close up photos

Sorry just one more question: I've heard that this lens will actually look like a 60mm when paired with the d5300. Is this correct? If so why?

No problem haha. I use it on the D5200 which is very similar to the D5300. Since they are both DX there should be no cropping and it should look like 40mm so I wouldn't worry about that :)

Excellent video I just subbed! I was wondering which lens should I get ? The 50mm 40 or 35?.. I do hair wave vids sorta like interviews but I don't want to be to far away from the cam when I shoot also I love bokeh in my vids and pics i shoot pics like the one on my default pic... If u need a idea of wat I'm talkin about plz check out a couple of my yt vids on my Channel to sorta get a idea of wat I'm looking for and which lens suit me best..thanks!!

What about the 35mm ? I hear a lot of good things about that lens also..It does great in low light plus it has great bokeh as well..

Poppy Blasted The 35mm is a very good lens. They will perform very similarly in low light though the 50mm will give you better Bokeh. Both options are very good but if it were my buying one I'd go for the 50mm:)

The focal length won't be too different but the 30mm won't be able to do any macro so I'd recommend getting the 40mm😃 hope this helps
