it is actually called a pancake lens. It is also sharper than the g series wide open. The pancake is better, It has less glass in it. I would take this over the G.

Yes sir!There is a better and original version with close-up capability to .45 inches from the source instead of your comparison lens of 2.0 feet, it's all metal construction, it's Nikkor and not an E-Series.....The Serial Numbers on the Lens begin with a number "2" and they are a harder find, slightly higher priced and mostly found in Japan

I just bought it for about 120 dollars. ($1850 pesos in Argentina). Here that is really cheap. A new 50mm F1.8 is about 330 dollars.

Arash Fayyaz the silver version has virtually the same glass, and it is a bit larger than the version in this video. Both are still small and light and should be priced about the same on eBay.

@@jc9240 Your thinking of the Ai-s lens that where made around the same time, The E series where the cheaper version and the later ones had a silver band just to make look like the more expensive Ai-s lenses. The E series are still actually a decent lens they just used plastic bodies not metal to cut down costs and not able to focus as close. But the later runs of the As-i lenses closest focus changed from .45m to .6m, the other difference was they didn't have the premium Nikkor Nikon name just Nikon. They made 1.25 million of the 50mm E series between 1979-85 so there should be plenty out there as well as the other focal lengths of the E series. The Ai-s lenses where made from 1980-2005 and there's plenty of them (just not for sale) I think a lot of the ones on eBay are actually new just old stock as they where never sold because this crossed over with the newer AF D lens but optically I think there where the same.

Jessica Castanon the series e won't autofocus and won't meter on your d3100. You can use it in manual mode only and set exposure by trial and error.

The "Series E" lenses, including the "pancake" lens here, were designed as budget lenses to go with the early 1980s budget bodies (EM, FG, FG-20). Compared to 50mm Nikkors, the Series E lacks multi-coating, so will give images of slightly lower contrast and with less color saturation. For the 50mm, the sharpness of the Series E is almost the same as the Nikkor, however the same conclusions do not apply to the other Series E lenses, several of which are relative stinkers, particularly the 28mm.

Nope. The 100mm is an astonishingly useful lens, possibly the best of the lot. Image quality rivals every modern lens I have. And the 28mm gives amazing images, just needs to be stopped down a bit.

@@mistuhgee The 28mm Seriesw E lens is not only considered the worst lens of the Series E group, but also may be the worst prime lens Nikon ever sold, in terms of lack of resolution and uncontrolled optical aberrations. Considering the fine 28mm 2.8 and the 28mm 2.0 (one of Nikon's uber-lenses), spending money on the Series E would be nuts. The 100mm Series E is a true fine lens. It's not well known because there are relatively few out there. and it lives in the shadow of the 105mm 2.5 (another uber-Nikkor), Used, it often costs as much as a 105mm as well.

@@randallstewart175 The 28mm Series E presented Nikon with a bit of a problem. It was at least as good as the AI mount Nikkor 28mm F/2.8. Nikon was committed to the idea that the Nikkor lenses should be superior to the Series E lenses, so a complete redesign of the 28mm F/2.8 was needed for the Nikkor AIS version. The result was probably the best 28mm F/2.8 lens ever made. You are the first person I have ever seen who had anything bad to say about the Series E 28mm lens.
