I love mine! I also have the Z100-400 and the Z180-600. I find uses for all of them but the Z 600 6.3 VR S is the best as long as you don't need to get close to your subject. I bought mine when it was $800 off in December. I think it is $1000 off now.

All my wildlife shooting over the last year has been with m43 gear. The Olympus 300mm F4 and Panasonic Leica 200mm 2.8 are two of the best lenses I have used from any brand period. Both can take the teleconverters. I recently picked up a z50 II and rented the 100-400 and 180-600. To compare to the m43. It was a good combo but at the end of the day the image quality was not much over the much smaller m43 gear. I plan on keeping the z50 II for now but it won’t be my main wildlife setup

Leigh, I'm using the Sigma 500mm f/5.6, usually with the 1.4x teleconverter on my Lumix S5ll, making the lens a 700mm f/8. I love that set up for wildlife. I'm hoping Panasonic is going to release a higher megapixel camera in the near future, which would result in even better quality photos than I'm getting now with my S5ll.

I own the 4.5/400mm and the 6.3/800mm. Perfect combo in my eyes. The 400mm still works great with a 1.4TC and although it is a bit of fiddling around with the TC it basically gives me a 6.3/600mm in addition to the native 400mm.

The 400mm f/4.5 was released and I bought it, then this 600mm was released! I get the 560mm with TC1.4x @f6.3 is almost the same as the 600mm lens, but it isn't as sharp, but close. The 600mm is too long for some scenarios so the 400mm on its own @f/4.5 is perfect. It all depends on your subjects, lots of small birds and the 600mm is ideal (and you can add the TC's), for bigger animals, aircraft and perhaps sports the 400mm is more useful.

Great review. Thank you. Regarding the moon, I'm in the same boat as you. Partial (especially crescent stages) are IMO the best times to shoot the moon. Much more detail visible. More shadows due to angle of sun.

I'm fortunate to own the 100-400, 180-600, 600pf and 600TC -- they all have their uses. The 600pf is nothing short of excellent and can even take the 1.4xTC in stride. My only beef is the long MFD which makes it difficult to shoot birds if they fly in close.

I absolutely love the Nikon 500mm PF on my D500, it's the sharpest lens I have ever used except for the 105mm Micro! And it is an easy combination to carry all day long.

I love the versatility of the 180-600mm for airshow photography. I pair it with my Z9 and sometimes throw on the 1.4X Teleconverter. I have borrowed the 600mm PF but I still like my 180-600

I had the F mount 200-500 which was a lump...heavy and zooming out was difficult at it required more than a full turn. Plus, on a tripod, it was hard to balance when the tube extended. Now on my Z8 I use the z180-600 which has a 75º turn from near to far and is an internal zoom. It's still heavy though, requiring (for me_) a monopod for long shoots. Good clear images though. I'd get the 600 6.3 ut I prefer the a ability a zoom allows for composing the image

I recently bought the 180-600mm and I find I use the zoom more than I thought I would, having been a 600mm f4 and 500mm PF F mount lens user in the past. I would have loved the 600mm PF, and if the current sale continues long enough I may trade for it. It is almost down to what I paid for the 500mm PF now. Another, lighter weight alternative I considered was the 400mm f4.5 (what a great lens to pair with a Z50ii). With my Z9 I could still get 600mm field of view in DX mode and 20 MP files. But for song birds I often go to DX mode with the 600mm and I would have missed that. With f6.3 already at 600mm, I tend to avoid teleconverters these days.

Nikon is killing it with their cheaper lens options, from the democratized f2.8 trinity, to the cheaper super telephoto primes

Love my z8 & 500mm 5.6 PF combo. However, I am stuck on the 600mm 6.3 PF upgrade consideration.

Super telephoto for me is a Nikon 800pf on a Z8 body. When I don't require that much reach, I use the Tamron 50-400.

I have owned the Sigma 150-600 contempory lens. It was sharp lens. At first the reason I bought it was the telephoto up to 600. I bought it from B& H photo. On sale for under $900.00. Budget is always important to me. I used my Z 7 ll with . Birding, planes, and few of my pets. I would have loved to have the Z $600. Also if you need to closer then 600 mm you can't

I went with the "cheap" primes 4.5/400, 6.3/600 and 6.3/800 and the 180-600 when I need more flexibility and the 100-400 for less weight tours. All of them are very sharp and really nice, but I am still thinking about the 2.8/400 because of the light gathering and build in TC

I currently use the 180-600mm but have debating between getting the 600mm or the 800mm. Looking to trade in a lot of my DSLR bodies and F mount lenses I don’t use much to purchase whatever lens I decide to get

How does your back hold up, lugging that 600 around? Hope you're all well, again. I have the 100-400. 1.4TC, maybe.

I have the Nikon 100-400mm lens and a 2x teleconverter for when I want reach. But you really pay a light penalty with the teleconverter and can only really shoot with it on sunny days. Maybe some day I will get one of the super-telephoto primes.

Now that the new P1100 has been announced, I think many will go for that. I appreciate the Prime lens quality but the P1100 will zooooom in a lot more and so your image may end up with more pixels than a Z9 image cropped in Lightroom etc. Of course the 600 F6.3 will have less DOF and a better fall-off but it is a matter of horses for courses and how much you want to pay, in order to go “click”. By applying some photographic knowledge to bring out the best in the P1100 I think many would be surprised at how good those images can be. Cheers Snappy

That small sensor small pixel p1100 isn’t even in the same league as a full frame sensor with a pro level lens. I owned the p1000 it not even close.

My super telephoto has been a Nikon B700 which is equivalent to 1440mm (x60 zoom) as a hybrid camera. But my Z50ii comes in today and I'm super excited for it. Man I wish I had some of these lenses to play with though. Maybe I should rent... I feel my wallet getting lighter already.

400 4.5 + TC 1.4 FTW ... sometimes I need to keep the ISO down, 6.3 pushes ISO to high for my liking. If I were wealthy I would buy the 400 2.8 TC

It’s limits you to 600mm. The 180-600mm f6.3 is a better option.

Finally someone bringing up the price of a 6.3 lens. I shoot Nikon but sometimes you need to start questioning things and not just blindly follow a brand due to some kind of loyalty. Since everyone is selling f mount glass I’ve picked up a 300mm F2.8 and 500 F4 for less than this 6.3 lens, and those are really pro lens’s that are just simply on another level.
