I use the Nikon 9000ed scanner with a Mac laptop and it produces good, detailed scans. I use the Vuescan software on my Mac and I have found it easier to work with than I did the Nikon software on a windows machine years ago. I scan to produce a 16-bit aRGB tiff file rather than a grey gamma 2.2 file. The aRGB file is also a gamma 2.2 file and it can be opened/worked on by pretty much all Photoshop plug-ins and additionally with Capture One, while a grey scale file often cannot. The Nikon Firewire connection requires several adapters to connect to the Mac's Thunderbolt port, but it does work fine, even with the 2022 M1 Mac. However, do NOT try to connect to a USB port (on any computer; windows or Mac) using a Firewire to USB connector of the sort sold on eBay. This is the quickest way to burn out the main circuit board on the Nikon that there is. There is a Nikon Scanner FaceBook group that can provide support and answer questions about using the scanners.

I watch a lot of photographer channels on youtube, but yours is by far my favorite! I was also thinking about byuing the Nikon Scanner. But here in germany a scan service of a 6x7 slide on the Nikon costs 2,30 Euro per frame. So I guess I will have to continue sending them in to have them scanned - I don't shoot nearly enough to justify the price of the Nikon - sadly ;)

I bought a 9000 about 15 years ago, used and broken, for $400. Fixed it in one day at no cost. The flex coupling between the stepper motor and the lead screw was broken. Replaced it with a rigid one that I made. To allow for shaft misalignment, I floated the motor by loosening the mounting screws. It has worked flawlessly since. I use VueScan. For medium format, I removed the clamping part from the standard carrier and use a heavy piece of anti-Newton glass to hold the negative flat. Works great.

Yea have owned my 9000 for a long time now, main problems over that time is a broken on off switch , a sankin power switching unit replaced, dirty mirror and a dodgy ribbon cable now held in place with glue, managed to do all myself, it’s a great scanner , I also got the rotating film holder with masks at a great price, this makes scanning in vuescan so much easier

Great comparison video that I believe demonstrates for critical work the Nikon is a great choice. Love the relaxed pace - very English! A great portrait of your son and surprisingly sharp results for a Mamiya TLR - yours had a great lens! Unfortunately Nikon 9000ed scanner prices have been pumped hard on eBay by sellers who haven't got a clue what the scanner can do they just want money! Most are sold without any convincing proof they are working properly. Which means buyer beware. Here in Aus I see Nikon 9000ed scanners on eBay classified as junk but the seller expects someone to pay AU$3000! But if you can find one at a reasonable price that is fully functional and have a big collection of 35mm and roll film negs I think a 9000ed is a great choice. Having said that the Epson 8850 is more versatile for large format scanning where its limitations are less noticeable and at the price point has its advantages for general use. But not great for 35mm in my opinion. There is probably a case for both scanners - if you want to cover multiple formats! Subscribed!

My 9000 died last year so I got a great price for it as not working, I bought a Nikon 5000ed for 35 mm and used my e epson flat bed for MF , the epson as in this video is OK ish and the 5000 produces artefacts in black and white scans, amazing fir colour work though. So we’re to go , the 9000 was amazing but I’m not prepared to be ripped off and pay thousands and have it break down 6 months later. So over the last few months I have used my mirror less canon camera with macro lens to digitise the negs and totally convinced this is the way to go, some people say the scans are not the same as a dedicated scanner, I compared the canon scans to the Nikon 9000, there is no difference just as good if not better , that’s were I am at the moment

Many thanks for another excellent video Martin. I picked up a number of tips that will help me to get better scans from my Nikon 8000ED scanner. For what it’s worth, the Nikon 8000ED might be a viable alternative to the 9000ED for some as the second hand prices are lower and this machine still produces high quality scans albeit more slowly. Great video. I have dozens of cameras as i've shot film for a long time and decided its worth digitally archiving some of the negatives (I still print them via an enlarger) so am just working out what will be best. Interesting comment about the mamiya though, out of all my medium format cameras (some like the hassleblad cm500 / mamiya 7 / fuji gx680 which are consistently rated very highly) my really old folding mamiya 6 which was cheap as chips when it was new and by all accounts shouldnt really be anything special consistently takes razor sharp photos even with no thought at all! The only other folding rangefinder I use is a Zeiss Super Ikonta B which on paper at least should run rings around the old mamiya 6 folder but it doesn't hold a candle to it!

I bought one of the early Plustek 120 scanners (having owned a Plustek 8100 for some time) and I think it's a wonderful alternative. It's much sharper than the Epson V700 scanner with better scanning negative holders. I use the Plustek 120 with Vuescan and Color Perfect. The original Plustek 120 has been redesigned as the Plustek 120 Pro. I think it's worth looking at prior to opting for the Nikon.
@martinhensonphotography3 жыл бұрын
Can you tell me if the Plustek 120 pro has auto focus
@PeteMP33 жыл бұрын
@@martinhensonphotography No it doesn't and that is claimed as the main drawback to the Plustek, but it is still sharper than my Epson V700. It would be interesting to see a side by side comparison of the two. Perhaps when the Covid crisis is all over, I could lend you my 120 to compare with the Nikon. It appears there is some adjustability of the focus of the 120 Pro possible blog.plustek.com/2020/08/19/opticfilm-120-pro-is-even-smarter-the-focus-is-adjustable/
@martinhensonphotography3 жыл бұрын
@@PeteMP3 yes that would be interesting to see a comparison, the Nikon produces very sharp scans as it is an AF scanner, the Epson is not in the same league as the Nikon I use (9000ed) there are many claims on the internet about how you can get clear scans out of the v series scanners, I find these claims hard to believe, I have two the v700 and the v800, no matter how I try, different heights, holder's, wet scanning it never produces scans that are sharp in focus and I don't think it can, unless some one out there can send me a straight scan with no sharpening to prove otherwise

Thanks for this video Martin. I too own a LS9000 and an V850. I scan both 35mm and 120, colour and monochrome. I use Vuescan and ColorPerfect on both machines, as the Nikon Scan software is no longer compatible on my iMac. I don't however have the rotating film holder (yet) for the Coolscan, and use the standard medium format holders on both. Our workflows are therefore very similar, so this vid was of particular interest to me. Your results are completely consistent with mine. There is a noticeable difference between the two scanners 'straight out of the box'. However, I came across a website years ago (maybe Filmscanner.info, but I can't find the exact page anymore) that also compared the two, but they experimented with applying smart sharpening in PS to try and equalise the Epson to the Nikon. I have used this sharpening technique with great success on the Epson, even though I have the choice. Long story short, once you correctly sharpen the Epson, you end up with the graininess of the Nikon, and a much closer result in terms of sharpness. Of course this technique would probably only accentuate the poor tonal transitions that you highlighted. I personally have never noticed these, but then again I naturally favour a more contrasty outcome anyway.

I think the least software intervention the better, my scanning workflow is pretty linear and the only software that alters the file is ColorPerfect, the ability to bring highlights and shadows under control in there is the key to good scans, the rest is simply selective contrast control in Photoshop, I cannot comment on Neg lab pro as I have not used it, I think the proof is in the pudding lol you seen the results on all my video images although all black and white, so many choices :-)
