Excellent review, best I have seen yet on the D7500. The D7500 does focus MUCH faster with better glass, I have the Nikkor 16-80mm f2.8 VR on mine and it is instantaneous. It focuses so fast I thought it wasn't doing anything at first. It's a world of difference compared to what I was used to with my old D90 and Nikkor 18-70mm I was using normally.

Great comprehensive review as usual Maarten. Recently purchased this myself to replace an xt2 as my walkabout setup. (I’ve got big hands and find mirrorless too fiddly and unbalanced to hold, even with a grip) The D7500 does focus quicker with better glass. Quicker than my D750 with my 70-200 f4. I find it a very quick camera, even in low light. Image quality is excellent. Grip is good and decent ergonomics, especially if you’re used to Nikon prosumer bodies. SnapBridge very frustrating though. Can live with one SD card. Love your reviews. Keep up the great work.

I want to complement you on the methodical approach you take and all the relevant details you have covered. I am a very keen Nikon user, but got frustrated with Nikon's lack of allowing on the fly adjustments to Aperture and Shutter during live video recordings. Has the D7500 overcome this short fall?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
This is a lens limitation, not a body limitation. The D7500 can set aperture in live view mode, as long as you're using a lens with an electronic shutter (usually has an E designation). Shutter is not affected by this issue.

I would suggest that you would be happy with just the 16-80, or better a single wide angle prime. You won't want to shoot with an open aperture (likely F5.6 or higher), nor do you need to zoom, nor does owning two lenses seem advantageous for landscape photos.

Maarten: First time seeing one of your reviews. Great job of explaining most of the features. I've had the D7500 for about 2.5 months and I believe it is a fantastic camera. It's quite an upgrade from my previous D7000, as the the D7500 renders images so much better and faster, and the quality retains at much higher ISO's. All the features missing from the previous 7xxx series are things I don't use often or not at all, so I don't miss them. One thing reviewers either don't mention or will briefly mention but with little regard to value, is the new grip shape and depth. The grip on the my D7000 was the one thing I hated about it, and worse that the D90 before it. The grip on the D7500 offers a very secure grasp of the camera, sooo much better than all my previous Nikons. Lets face it, some feature we use some of the time, or rarely, or not at all, but we ALL use the grip ALL of the time. Having a comfortable and secure grip is very important for aiding in the pleasure of carrying and using a camera, especially with heavier lenses. Perhaps not so much if you're always a tripod-shooter.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. I agree - and like you, I loved the grip, large and solid. As hand size differs so greatly between photographers, I hesitate to make too big a deal about a grip that I feel is ideal for me, but the D7500 fits in that group. = - along with a few other Nikon models like the D500.
@mortis79577 жыл бұрын
You're right. Nikon have changed the grips on all recent cameras to allow for a deeper and more secure hold, including the D5500/5600 and I believe even the D3400 and the new D850. I have to wonder what took them so long to take seriously the shape of a grip.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I wish I could answer your question. No idea what caused them to redesign.
@dannylruybelican87386 жыл бұрын
D7500 might be a good choice if you want tilted,touch screen,usable 4k or if you're an amateur photographer who wants to know a lot about Nikon System. D7200 is a good budget choice or stepping stone in photography if you want Dual Card slot, battery grip and high resolution. Both D7200 or D7500 is good enthusiast camera to learn. Specs are just papers, if you put good glass on it, the one who will hold the camera will dictate good image results. Pick D7200 is you want cheaper bargain dslr, pick d7500 is you want good updated features or step up to Full Frame if you want to invest more on lenses for future gear upgrade.

I always love your reviews Maarten, it's not just reviewing but you also educate people to give time to learn more about the DSLR system instead of comparing it to other brand or model. Nikon is just doing business for not giving us what we expect to have in D7500 so the older brand will still be some sort of choice depends on your needs like D7200.D7500 is a good updated camera, you just need to adopt what kind of photography you're into.

Stellar job as always MH! There are "no new bad cameras," this is just a poor man's D500. It seems they simply drop or add a few performance features to justify a price bracket. The demise of Nikon was greatly exaggerated. Thanks MH.

Hi Maarten! I literally JUST bought a Nikon D7500, and it's doing me wonders (I've worked with Nikons and Cannons in high school before, so it's nice to have one of my own finally). Thanks for the video! It's REALLY helping me out. I do gotta ask (and this goes out to anyone else who might have had this problem), there's one set back that is really inconvenient for me: for some reason, when I am shooting 4k, I can't record longer than 30 seconds, because then I'll get a "recording interrupted, please wait" notification. I get about 12 comments per day, and I have enough time while I'm waiting for something to import or render, or while riding transit or waiting for the dentist to get to them all. @@nevvanclarke9225 There are several reasons to have two slots - not just for the number of images to be stored. I'm not really sure about flashes, I don't use them a lot, clearly the Nikon might be most suitable, but other brands like Godox have good reputations and are less expensive. What are the features that would enhance your photography if you upgrade?
@peterfleischman92575 жыл бұрын
Your review was incredibly informative. I haven't seen better reviews anywhere. I hope you can help me. I have a D5200 and have been investing in my photography skills by taking classes. I use my camera mostly for travel and for taking pictures of my grandchildren. As I'm learning more, I'm beginning to see the limitations of the D5200 - it doesn't focus very fast and the images are not as crisp and sharp as I'd like. I can't say that I've outgrown the D5200- there are still plenty of features I haven't yet mastered. I've been looking at the D7500 and Sony mirrorless cameras. I like being able to use the lens collection I already have, but I don't want that to limit me to Nikon crop sensor cameras. Is the D7500 going to feel like a big step up in image quality and camera performance? Or should I make the jump to a different camera family? Size and weight are important to me. Price is always a consideration, but I'd rather make a good long term decision than an inexpensive short term one. Thank you so much.
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated. I would suggest that you look to lenses and flashes to improve image quality before upgrading to the D7500. I suspect your quality issues are primarily lighting related, and although I'm not sure which lenses you're using, Nikon inexpensive DX lenses are not their best. That said, you might be better off with a nice prime (35mm, 50mm) than a zoom. Although focus might be marginally faster on the D7500, there's not really much benefit in image quality. If you want the fastest (and best) auto focus, particularly for people/faces - Sony's EyeAF on the A7III (and although I haven't reviewed it yet) on the A6400 is remarkably fast, particularly when paired with a G-Master lens with the AF button. (it can be customized to EyeAF) - that's autofocus for faces that's quite remarkable. Fujifilm's X-T3, although it's not as good with focus overall, does also do amazing face detection/eye autofocus. It's very impressive in low light and even in profiles. I'm not sure which Nikon lens might be best, and even on more expensive bodies, they don't have the level of face/eye detection seen elsewhere. I hope this helps.

@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you, Maarten for your prompt reply. I have a 35mm f1.8 prime, 18-55 kit lens, and an 18-200 zoom. Surprisingly, I get the best results with the 18-200 zoom. Great review content Maarten, I have been out of photography as an advanced enthusiast for about two years and now getting back into again I still have my Nikon lenses like the 24-85mm and 28mm f/1.8 but sold my Nikon body which was the D7000, the D7500 has the similar user functionality of the D7000, I have researched throughly on the D500, D7500 & D500 share the same sensor. Which you recommend overall between the D7500 or the D500 or go FX. Thank you for your input
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
For as appealing as FX (full frame) is, I'm not sure that there are very many photographers (even pros) who actually can and are taking advantage of it. However, the reality is that Nikon's FX lenses are, in the main, much better than their DX lenses. So, if you have some nice old FX lenses, mounting them on a DX body will likely provide great results. Of those, I'd likely choose the D500 - I really enjoyed shooting with it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5vEnmOwedN4hNE

Hi Maarten, Great review on the D7500,. Out of all the D7500 videos I've seen, I believe this is the best with your showing of what settings does what on the D7500. Also, browsing through your comments, I don't believe I've seen any youtuber who's so dedicated in reply to most, if not all, comments. Major props to you! I am a beginner getting into photography but I've played around with 2 DSLRs in my life, both Nikon. One that's too old for me to remember and another a D5000. If I have the budget, would the D7500 be a good recommendation for me or should I get something on the lower end? Regarding lenses, I've decided to get 3 (not all immediately though) which I have listed below. Wide Angle Zoom: Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 (Short Term) Telephoto: Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Contemporary (Long Term) All in One: ??? I'm currently undecided for an all-in-one lens. Are my lens choice recommended? What is your recommendation for a robust all in one lens? Thank you.

Thanks for your kind words and sharing your thoughts. It is my intention to reply to all comments and answer all questions. The Nikon walk-about I've really enjoyed using is the 16-80. I would ask what feature you feel is missing from the D5000 that you feel the D7500 will address? Hope this helps.

@@MaartenHeilbron Wow, even your reply is quick as well! I feel that the D7500 will give me sharper pictures, allow me to record videos in 4K, as well as allow me to take motions shots better with the larger fps. I am confused between of nikon 18-140mm lens and 18-300mm lens . I read some comments, some people say 18-140mm one has better and sharp quality than 18-300mm. What do you think about these two lenses ? (I am planing shoot portrait , city architecture, nature and animal photos. I’ll buy nikon 50mm prime lens for nice portrait photos ) . Thank you !!
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
It's always nice to hear that my videos are useful, thanks. The 50mm prime should be good for portraits. The quality of a Nikon branded lens is (more or less) related to the price. And a longer zoom should always be more expensive. I did a video about Nikon lenses to help understand the basics - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJPRYoOHaM6lhsU. Thanks for the excellent video..... I am a newbie to photography, buying my first DSLR ( Nikon D5300) in March 2017. I have watched the video several times now and learn something new each time..... I do find that you navigate settings etc very quickly and I have to stop and replay quite often to grasp what is being taught..... That's not a criticism just an observation..... My Nikon D7500 arrived yesterday so today is test day, putting into practice all that I've gleaned from your video. Thanks for taking the time to produce and post this video.... Regards, Ian

Thanks, I know that I go quickly - but I'm often frustrated by how slowly others go and how long it takes them to get to the point. For me, it seems easier to pause and review than to try to skip through. I realize that my videos can be and are used as tutorials, but they really are meant as reviews - to give you a sense of what the camera is like. That said, I'm happy that I've been able to create videos that you find useful, thanks for taking the time to comment.

Great review, very nice to see how to use the major features of the camera during the review and always nice to see more reviews from fellow Canucks :) Been looking to get my own DSLR and thinking between this camera (the D7500) and the Canon EOS 80D. I prioritize Image quality at the top of course, but good controls, UI and ergonomics is just as important as well. The 7-8 FPS, larger buffers then entry bodies and bigger/brighter view finders is why I'm deciding between these 2 models. It will be a general photography camera for stills, with some wildlife and bird photos on side. Not too worried about video features, but that Canon Dual Pixel AF will -be nice to have for live view shooting. What would your opinion be between the D7500 and EOS 80D? The D7500 is newer and looking around online at reviews the D7500 seems described as having mostly better image quality then the 80D but is D7500's image quality notably better then 80D without pixel peeping or is it basically a "coin flip" unless you start pixel peeping? If its not then I can get the 80D for less then D7500 and put the savings towards some nice glass :) I'm currently trying out the D7500 via rental but definitely try out the 80D before making any final decisions. Thanks again and keep up the great reviews :)
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. It is pixel peeping - in my mind image quality (putting aside colour science) is the same. The 80D is an excellent camera, but better lenses than the kit are required to take advantage of it's quality potential. As for the dual pixel AF, I think that's marketing hype, I don't believe that Canon's phase detect AF works in a different way than the competition, and it certainly doesn't seem any faster to me. If you're looking for the fastest continuous AF - look to Sony. Hope this helps.
@Rollergold46 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insights, will certainly keep it in mind :) Also what I meant about the DP-AF for live view was, live view just wasn't as snappy on the D7500 compared to AF system for its viewfinder probably due to Nikon's use of contrast detection AF for Live View.
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
It is one short-coming of DSLR cameras - that the focus system used for live view modes is inferior to the one used for viewfinder shooting.

Eventually I'd like to print my pictures and stretch them out a decent amount (40" tv size max) . I like the new features (mostly tilted screen and expeed5, i'm not worried about video) but I don't know if they're worth it at the cost of sacrificing 3mp. Would you say the D7200 takes higher quality photos but the 7500 has better color and low-light? Is the color and low-light that noticeable? Such a great review! For me as a student with limited budget, this camera seems like the best option as I want to upgrade my old d90. Don't want to make the switch to the FF sensor yet since i would have to change my crop lenses. Considering this situation I think this is the best value to money I could get, might as well get it on the upcoming Black Friday.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
It is a great camera to get - but why rush to buy a new camera? What is the D90 not doing for you? I'd recommend a better lens as a better investment in photography. And don't worry about FF at all.
@molnaralexandru34857 жыл бұрын
Well the main reason is for the last 2 years I have bought 2 FF lenses, the tamron 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 with VC. I love and I do shoot many concerts, the Focus issues are one of the huge drawbacks where I miss whole lot of what I know in those moments a great shot is very frustrating. Even with the new lenses which improved my shots a great deal, the fact that I can barely hit 1000 ISO and never go over 1250 is also a serious problem for me at concerts or events. I indeed prioritized lenses, but since I have those two I would like to upgrade my body, and make my d90 an infrared camera. Shutter also started to fail and give black shots occasionally, but it has 6-7 years. I've worked all summer to get money for the d7500, haha. What is your opinion regarding this choice? Could there be a better option that I've missed?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Your reasons are solid - and FF lenses (from Nikon, Canon, Sony) are typically of higher quality than their APS-C lenses 0-I'm sure that goes for Tamron and Sigma also, but I have less experience with those. I think the D7500 is the value point in Nikon's camera lineup, so it's a good choice - but although I found it fast for AF-S with single point, it's not as good with AF-C. And low light/high ISO is definitely improved over the D90.

I'm certain that you can, by eye, judge one third from the edges of the screen. Use your judgement to create pleasing compositions, not rules.

Im torn apart. One the one side is the d7500 with a kit lens for 1390.- (dollars). On the other side there is the d500 for approximately 1690.- dollars. That’s 300.- Dollars difference without a lens. But a much better Autofocus. What should i do?

Take the D7500, Im sure you wouldn't notice the difference.

Dear Maarten, May I know what is the bit rate or data rate for its 1080 (is the maxium 42mbits?) and its 4k recoding ? and also will 4k's 1.5 crop effect cause higher noise rate in recoding compare to 1080's full scenser recoding?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
The 4K bit rate is 144Mbps, for 1080 it's 48Mbps. I didn't test this, but I don't believe that a crop will affect the noise rate, as video is much lower resolution than the sensor.
@bilibilireefer15755 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you so much; just wondering its 144 mbps is from internal recoding or has to have the external recoding monitor?
@MaartenHeilbron5 жыл бұрын
That's internal. External rate will depend on the device.
@bilibilireefer15755 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron thx again Maarten, 144 bit rate sounds decent from myself. As my current d750 and d5500 both of the only generate 1080 which bite rate around 35-38 kbps maxium.

@@MaartenHeilbron and the video I'm working on mainly focus on close distance or macro shoot, i believe its additional 1.5 crop effect during 4k would not be issues for me. but i just wondering its 4k only uses the center 800 mag-pixs, would it cause the video quality became soften or less clarity compare to sony or fuji's regular full sencer recording's 4k (i'm not mean their 35mm supper cut mode).

Considering the same focus points of 51 and price difference of us 320$ this or d7200? Also 4k I can take from my phone so not bothered..
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
If you are happy with your current devices, there's no need to upgrade.
@roninr81996 жыл бұрын
Maarten Heilbron sorry I didn't mention I am upgrading from d5100..so shall I choose d7200 or d7500. there is a difference of 320 dollar. I have read that d7500 has improved night shots but again I am not a full time photographer..

You may be happier with an improved lens - and unless you're shooting in very dark situations, you may not notice the difference.

What a great gimmick-free and beneficial video, thank you. I have not owned a DSLR since I sold my pair D7000s years ago. If I will be doing landscape, what wide lens would you recommend that will give me a 35mm equivalent of 15mm-20mm?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. The DX crop factor (for cameras with APS-C sensors like the D7500) is 1.5 - so a 10mm lens would be 15mm, 14 would be (approximately) 20. I'm not familiar enough with the wide selection of Nikon compatible lenses to make an authoritative recommendation.

I was choosing between the exact same too earlier this year. In the end, I chose the Nikon 7500. I extremely happy with my choice, but in the end it really would not have made a difference! The more I use the camera, the more II realise that the two are so similar that the only difference (really) is the photographer. I got so caught up in the decision making (must have watched over a hundred reviews on KZbin!!) that I was about to flip a coin. Choose the one that feels good in the hand and just feels right. They are both excellent cameras with a wide choice of lenses available for both. Good luck..
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
You make an excellent point - I'm always encouraging my viewers to simplify their choices and make the decision based on their brand preference or design sense. In essence, the features are similar enough and in order to enjoy a camera, you must like it enough to never want to leave it at home. If a camera can do that - sit on a shelf and encourage you to go shooting, that's the best you can hope for.

Is the D7500 still a good camera for (advanced) landscape photography and (beginner) 4k video? I film only a single scene (mostly streams or in a forest with Zoom audio recording) for about 30 minutes on a tripod. But photography is most important ... also price and weight :) Alternatives could be Nikon Z50 or Panasonic G9 - but not really sure if the 4/3 sensor is good enough for landscape photography. Someone a recommendation? thanks!

I'd take the D7500 over the other two - simply for the better lens selection.

@@MaartenHeilbron thank you! Can you recommend good Nikon DX lenses for landscape? The only lens I own is the Nikon 35mm :) The Canon 90d could also be an option but as far as I know the dynamic range of the Nikon is better ...

@@patrick.771 I really don't have a good handle on all the F mount lenses that Nikon and third parties have. Any high quality prime should be good - likely in the 20-24mm range.
