If you only have £500 ish to spend on and FX body, then the 12MP D700 is pretty damn lovely (not as croppable but the images look great).

Excellent! It's good to see that something I made a few years back is still helping folk. These days I shoot with a Nikon Z7ii, but I still think that the D800 was the camera that I enjoyed using the most and had the best colour science.

I bought one before the 810 came out. Have only a handful of shots taken and haven't been active with photography due to busy work. I regretted not using the camera, but of course its as good as it was when it came out a few years ago. I will have to take it out and get back into taking photographs

I was in the same boat as you, a long-time DX (crop sensor) shooter, but I wanted to move to FX (full frame). I found a used D800 for $1500 (this was a bit before the D810 came out), so I picked it up and I've been so happy with it. The photos are beautiful, dynamic range is amazing and the detail it can capture is truly mind-boggling. I still use my D7100 for instances when I know I'm going to have to crop the image heavily, but the D800 beats it in every way, besides that, including low-light photography and videography. There are certainly cameras that perform better in low light than the D800 now, but there are very few with sensors that are better, overall, according to DXOMark, and nothing even close to the D800 for the price.

Scott R wow I am following in your footsteps. I have been using the Nikon d7100 for a bit and I love the camera. I wanted to start taking portraits professionally and I wanted to get a back up camera so in case my first one failed I would have a back up. So I started looking and I found a used Nikon D 800 for $500 on eBay. It had 135,000 on the shutter count but he had a receipt from the camera shop that he had the shutter replaced at 121,000. So I took a chance and said what the heck bought he d800 and I couldn’t be more happier. The images are so amazing and sharp. The load light capabilities for the D 800 is so much better than the D7100. But I will not get rid of the D7100 as it is now my back up camera. I use it with the tokina 100mm f2.8 macro that just melts t background away, and is great when out are in back of a church taking photographs during the Wedding vows. I have added battery grips on both cameras and have et to ever come close to running out of battery life. I thought about upgrading the D 800 but This camera still performs better than a lot of the cameras on the market today. Every One of my clients have been so happy on the image quality and the details on the larger prints that this camera has already been paid over 10 times already. But I found that the larger image files is easiest to be edited on the iPad Pro 10.5 which handles the image files like a champ. God bless

I have 2 of these bodies that I bought when they first came out. The image quality still blows me away. It is a great camera if you want to make big prints though it is not a speed demon. I find ISO 6400 good enough for most low light too. Since the D850 is out you can get one of these pretty cheap now. I see a bunch of them on ebay with low shutter counts for $1000-$1200. Get the D800e if you can find one. It don't have the low pass filter like the D810 and produces slightly sharper images. I mapped the movie on button to change ISO so it will behave like my D500

Hi ian, I am stuck, i am wanting a second hand camera for Studio, Events, Dance elements, weddings will come but not my favorite subject.. The Prices of the D750, D3s, D610 and D800 are all roughly the same, which should i be looking for? I am taking work, so i will be getting a newer camera before April next year thus this is a short term camera. all Come in at 700-1000, am just stuck deciding, any help appreciated.
@NigelBaileyPhotography7 жыл бұрын
Hi there - that's a BIG question. If you can match these for price, I would personally choose between the D610 and the D750, and probably the latter for that kind of use - quicker focus, newer processor, tilt screen, slow-motion 1080p video at 60fps to name but a few. Might be worth checking out this comparison: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fme0dZxnjsaLp68

Thanks Nigel, the thing is its only a temporary Camera, I can get a 750 at present for £890 second hand and a D610 £599, D800 £739, D3s £729. Think i will just save this month a little more and get the D750 then. I wasnt intending to spend that much i was thinking more D610(599) 2 FX lenses and ride it till next year. Guess it will make an ok backup camera also next year.

That's cool - honestly, these are all great cameras for the money. If you plan to keep it, spend the extra; if not then the cost becomes a simple matter of cashflow as you'll get most of the money back when you re-sell.

i see that you have the 16-35mm . What can you say about it ? Because i want to buy it also for my nikon d800 .
@NigelBaileyPhotography7 жыл бұрын
It has been a great lens for landscapes for me - in a perfect world I would buy the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 but it's crazy expensive. If you mostly shoot landscape the wider aperture isn't really necessary so the 16-35mm is a good "cheaper" alternative. Sill expensive, but cheaper by about £200 used. It's an FX lens and goes very well with my D800. But I've used it on my D7100 DX body too and it works just fine, just not so wide an angle of view. It's main limitation has been for astro shots - for that kind of work the f/4.0 aperture isn't really wide enough, but I have a 24-70mm f/2.8 for those shoots. So, basically, I use the 16-35 when I want to go that bit wider for daytime landscapes. When I next re-jig my lens collection this will be one that I keep. Hope that helps.
