Nikon F2 | How To & First Impressions

Thanks for a very complete review. In 1971, I traded one of my Nikon F bodies for a Nikon F2. After using the F2 for a few months, I decided it really liked it and traded my second F body for a new F2. I have been using F2 ever since. I have also used Nikon F3, F4, EM, N70, and N2000 bodies. However, the F2 has been my personal favorite since 1971. I use three with standard meterless prisms (the metered F2 prisms did not exist when I bought my first F2).

Have a 1970's USSR Zenith with a built-in electronic light meter (a solar panel rectangle in front and a VU meter type needle on top). No batteries otherwise. Beautiful optical viewfinder. I rarely take it out of the leather pouch. Love the buzzing of the delay shutter. Back in those days, if you wanted to take a photo of yourself or be in a group photo with everyone, you most often needed a mechanical extension cord. Zenith accepts remote shutter insertion into the wind up delay lever. I've seen other cameras with the same port being embedded on the side of the lens.

Started with a Nikon F in 1966. Bought a F2as yesterday. Hope to get as much service out of this one as the first which by the way is still working.

I got one from Japan with the DP-12 finder in mint condition. $300. I had one for years. And wanted the best finder

Same here (exactly). Mine came with a 55mm f1.2 lens so the total price was nearly £500 (UK sterling). Just to be on the safe side I had it serviced before I even used it (another £120!). Now though I'm 100% confident it'll last for many years to come. The only two down-sides (for me) are the difficult to see red LEDs and the weight.

One correction in your video. At 14:47, you said the mirror lock up was used when attaching some macro lenses. It was not macro but some of the extreme fisheye and wide-angle lenses that protruded deep into the camera body and required mirror lockup.

I find that the most common use for mirror lock up is with long telephoto lenses to reduce mirror vibration.

Hi! I have a really silly question. When I look into my view finder I have indicators for light meter fstop? And iso. my lens is always on f22 even when I try to change aperture it usually says f22 in the view finder. Sometimes when I change the aperture it shows f16 on view finder. I’m a bit confused by this, is my lens broken in a way?

I recently pickedup f2+nikon series e 50mm1.8 ..i noticed when i mount the lense the aperture goes wide open when it locks and the aperture ring doesn't work .. same problem with nikon af 24mm2.8d lense .. please help

Is the mirror lockup recommended for on-tripod exposure for say, under say 1/60? Great vid! I recently dig out my late father’s old Nikon f2 and there’s surprisingly fewer YT videos than I figured there’d be, so much appreciated!

I would definitely recommend mirror lockup for super slow shutter speeds on a tripod, combined with using a cable release. If you practice, you can get acceptable results at 1/15 or 1/30 handheld. Of course, that depends on your definition of "acceptable." The mirror lockup is also useful for some older wide-angle lenses, because the barrel has to extend into the body past the mirror. Glad you found this video! Totally thought there were more videos on the F2 myself, which is partly why I made this one. Happy shooting!

Superb cameras. I had an F2AS, an F2SB and an F3, and I can't think why I was stupid enough to sell them. The lure of digital (and the cost and lack of availability of film), I suppose.

I can understand that. For me, it's all about perspective and minutiae - instead of being sad about not having anything to take pictures of, which I definitely struggle with, I try to find scenes where something is obviously different. A downtown street on a Friday night without any people, empty storefronts, the prevalence of masks (or as is often the case where I live, the lack of masks) stuff like that. Or, try a different subject matter altogether - for instance, I tend towards street photography so I've been trying to get better at landscape

@@lukeisafinename yep that's what i said. in ROW no one is even aware of what happens there when it's not invasion of another country or something like 2008 usa crisis currently it's something something people robbing shops and stuff and that's me using english more than my native language, my mom doesn't know anything at all (as for local news: curfew is canceled so people free to go and get corona in bars, dictator proposes new constitution making him king, the journalists and several one-person protests are oppressed, all in a day's work)

@@tsartomato Not trying to assume anything about how anybody keeps up with the news. The BLM movement is worldwide right now with protests from the UK to Australia and a ton of countries in between. It has had an effect on my every day life and been weighing on my thoughts recently, which is why I felt the need to mention it. Cheers!

@@lukeisafinename well it's not news for anyone outside usa, just like you don't know a single thing about my local news despite sheer size of this mess, or you don't know the news of zhongua or bharat despite those making the majority of the human species. it's plain foreign language and foreign country for everyone outside yeah i understand that it was part of your life because it's your local news it's just anytime usaers say "world" or "global" it always about only their personal backyard, and it irritates global audience the same way americans get irritated that usaers call themselves americans. (well technically they are, but they always mean that they are THE ONLY americans, disregarding mexicans brazilians candians etc etc) or like gaming crash of 1983, which didn't happen anywhere else i wouldn't call uk and australia worldwide, and those both are satellite states sharing same language. also google says astrualians are not doing it for usa africans, but because local tribes it doesn't concern south amerika, africa, asia, middle east, CIS and all othe regions which didn't participate in trading africans (well africa did actually sell them to anglo saxons, but they don't care since the winners sold the losers of local wars and now write history and decide politics) like i don't say boo boo never say such things again, it's your decision. it's just if we describe it in terms of internet crazies that's "microaggression" and "choose your wording" and won't somebody please think of the children

In the future, please don't assume that I don't keep up with international news. Am I completely informed about the nuances and minute-by-minute happenings in China and India? No, but I do my best to keep up with that because, as you say, they do make up a giant portion of the world's population. UK. Australia. France. South Africa. Syria. Brasil. Nigeria. Jamaica. Germany. Japan. India. Just a few of the countries that have had protests against police brutality on people of color and showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
