NIKON P950 8 MONTHS USE 8000 PHOTOS + VIDEO ...... BIRDING IN MURCIA SPAIN

I have owned this Nikon P950 camera for 8 months and now taken 8000+ photos and quite alot of video
Not that many photos for a Proffessional but for me an amazing amount of learning to get this far
This is only a very small selection of photos and Videos taken this year and filmed entirely in the Murcian Region of Spain

Yes i shoot in RAW and then use Nikon NX Studio to edit the photos

I also bought a P950 10 days ago. I've only taken test shots of wild birds that I can see from my window, but I'm looking forward to the future. By the way, I live in the southern suburbs of Osaka, Japan.

The Nikon P950 is a great camera for the money with a fantastic zoom to 2000mm !!! 👍 which certainly helps me alot ...good luck on your journey with this camera

Thank you for your comment. Right now, Japan is in the middle of summer and the heat wave continues, making it unsuitable for birdwatching. I think the P950 will be very active in the fall when it cools down.@@digger360

I would recommend using mainly 4k30 video and the jpeg extraction which also works while shooting video. I see the P950/P1000 as the only camera deserving to be called a good camcorder (and thats the only thing, NOT a "real" stills-camera). You will be for sure happy with it when you focus more on video than stills. But stills with this "camera".... they look too often very bad, but in macro photography and also video with usage of heavy zoom (80mm+ on the lens = effective 400mm+) its pretty awesome and give even good background seperation as well a nice bokeh.

@@harrison00xXx most of my footage is a 2000mm and handheld so can be pretty shaky at times and now in summer you can get alot of heat haze over distance

Camera seems to have a focussing issue, the camera would suddenly lose focus only to re-gain it a short moment later. I think there it a focus lock function in the camera, it might help.

have you ever thought about trying manual focus (or focussing via button and if it sits stop focussing) Is that even possible on the P1000 or P950? I can really recommend you getting proper gear. Doesnt have to be a 2500$+ telezoom and 2000$+ camera, even a "basic" Canon RF 800 F11 is amazing for its price. The price you pay all together sadly depends heavily on the body you pick and Canon is expensive (and intentionally limited/crippled) to protect their professional, more expensive cameras). Nowadays i would either wait what Nikon releases in the near future fitting nicely to the 180-600 or go directly to Sony (with probably A7SIII, A6700 or A7C II and with a 200-600G)

Don't forget the whole point of the P950 is birding on a budget. You buy a mirrorless body like the A7Cii for instance, and a 200-600mm lens you're looking at 4 or 5 thousand dollars. Even on the used market at places such as KEH a good used 600mm lens is as expensive or more expensive as a brand new P950. People shooting birds with the P950 are doing it for fun and will be putting the photos on social media, and in most cases it's good enough for that. They're not printing out a wall sized poster. I have a P950 "little brother" in the Nikon B700, and have gotten some great photos with that camera.

What type of setting you keep for bird photography

Hi i just use Aperture Priority mostly in f/5.6 or f/6.5 seems to be best for me in bright sunlight and stationary birds etc and i can keep the ISO down to 100 as this camera is not very good over ISO 400 lots of noise so then need to be skilled in post to get good results ...i dont take many birds in flight as im not good enough but i do try and use Shutter Priority but struggle to get above 1/2000 sec without lots of noise hope this helps

@@digger360 Birds in flight have always been a problem for me too but one thing I have had success with recently is by sighting over the top of the camera rather than trying to use the finder or screen. By luck, when using a Sony RX10 iv, if you sight over the top of the hot shoe to the top of the lens hood it corresponds to the bottom of the frame at full zoom. My guess is that you will find something similar with the P950. I have even managed to get shots of swallows and gold finches in flight using this method. I think I have even seen a green dot projection sight mounted on a Nikon P1000 which would obviously be an even better solution.

@@digger360 I can absolutely recommend for BIF, tracking/following birds in general, in fact even for finding the target in the frame using both eyes. If your EVF isnt shifted and placed correctly you "only" have to align the viewfinders center with the bird you are following/tracking with your bare eye. As i was using 800mm (RF 800 F11 + EOS RP) i absolutely managed to track BIF as long they were not too fast, but since im at 1280mm (APS-C camera now) its getting a hassle, BIF is practically impossible beyond effective 1200mm. Stationary stuff tho is "easy" to get in the frame tho with both eyes used.

​@@ColinMill1 I tried a GoPro mounted on the hot shoe with a dot on the screen. Works also like a red dot sight, just with a little lag and needed readjustment when you bump the gopro mount too heavy. On my telescope ("just" 750mm) i use a red dot sight and its absolutely needed when not computer controlled/automated, especially when used with a crop camera (so 1100mm+) finding anything is very hard with the telescope

@@ColinMill1 i do apologise for not replying as i have only received this notification / reply today 🤬 yes i did look into one the these DOT sights but they seem to have very mixed reviews so gave up on that idea....i think i just need to pratice alot more 😊
