Nikon: The good and the bad

So optimistic that I preordered the Z9 (still waiting) on announcement day and since then have bought the holy trinity 2.8s,105macro and 50 1.2. This coming from a Canon (since 1983) and Panasonic MFT fanboy. My first Nikon ever! Edited add on! I have now had my Z9 about a month now and it was definitely worth the wait and is far better than I dreamed of. It has a steep menu learning curve coming from Canon but I constantly discovering small workflow features that just make it a dream camera for me beyond the headline features. The lenses are not only optically fantastic but the minimal focus breathing, super fast and quiet motors coupled with the just recently added linear manual focussing firmware updates, plus being able to reverse the focus direction for us Canon users with added choice of focus throw angles just make this combination the icing on the cake for my needs! Even my old Canon EF 300 2.8L (adapted with the Fringer EF-NZ) works fantastically with 3D tracking and eye detection, in fact, it has never had to work so hard or fast, I am a little worried it will not be able to maintain this extra workload for too much longer!😂😎👍🏾

I was optimistic about Nikon's Z line right from the start. As an enthusiast, the initial offerings like the super tiny 14-30mm/4, or the zeiss-otus-sharp 50mm/1.8 were exactly what I wanted in my bag. Nikon played it boring and predictable, focusing on the essentials that nearly everybody needs in their kit first: 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, then holy trinity of zooms, then they branch out into specialty lenses like pancake and macro and supertele from there.

Optimist! I've been using also a7III, R5, R6 but durñe to my extreme all terrain conditions where I use my equipment ended up with Z as the most stable system of all. With heavy dust environment, low light situations, excelente low light video af even at high ISO, heavy rain resistance, NO overheating as hybrid usage with no failures, HQ glass with no CA, balanced weight avoiding more hand injuries compared to non balanced RF lenses. Is the least FF expensive system with top Image quality. Impressive better rendition even with Z28mm and Z40mm than Sony and RF pancakes at half the price. And don't forget that for those who don't live in US, we are charged with Vat of up to 60% additionally making some models extremely unaffordable.

I brought a Nikon z50 when I saw the Z9, it made me believe in Nikon again and willing to invest in the Z series and as soon as the tech in Z9 filters down to the lower tier cameras I will buy them

Bought the Z system mostly because of the f1.8 primes - pro level optics (unlike other brands f1.8 lenses) that were designed for hybrid use from the start. Great AF for video, no focus breathing, the best weather sealing I’ve ever seen and great build quality. Best lens line up of any brand imho. Also the Z6 that I bought in 2018 isn’t the same Z6 today. The firmware has improved autofocus and usability a lot.

Thanks! Whew, I can sleep better now knowing I have a modest investment in some new Nikon Z stuff like the Z7ii, 24-120mm f4S, 70-200 f2.8S and the 20 1.8 for astro and ultra wide landscape. No Z9 in my future but I look forward to the trickle down to future Z bodies. However, I really like the Z7ii a lot and I think the firmware to update AF keeps improving it and I think there will be more to come. Have been a Nikon owner since '79 and I for one am excited about Nikon's future.

I am fully into Sony system now, but I am so happy that Nikon was able to pull it off and gave us a Z9 to shut a lot of youtubers (certan couples and gym fanatics, anyone?), so Nikon will always be an option for my work, if Sony ever fails me... which is not the case so far!

Why on earth did I buy a z6II they have done zero to make use of the '2x power' they marketed at release. Please don't tell me it's not powerful enough, the A7 III has better AF and it's a much older less powerful camera, it's SOFTWARE, Nikon must improve the ZII's.

Completely agree. My worry is now they have the Z9 the focus will be on that and developing new cameras, it appears from the complete lack of improvements or updates on the Z6/7ii's that Nikon have given up with them and their focus will be on releasing new cameras with Z9 tech in them, and I don't think we'll see Z6/7iii's until next year some time. I really hope I am wrong, but in the 6 months since the Z9 was release it's one major update whilst the Z6/7ii's have had a couple of minor enhancements, support for new lenses and a few bug fixes in the 18 months since it was released, there has been enough time since the Z9 to trickle down improvements in the AF to the other cameras, but we've have zilch!

The A7III and Z6 were released the same year, so how is it "much older". The Z6II was released with only three significant changes. Two processors do not magically allow a lot of stuff to happen the way a 10x more powerful processor does (Z9).

I’ve never bought a 1.4. I am a huge F1.8 prime fan. The Z F1.8s are great lenses with performance which outclasses the F mount F1.4s of the same focal length. I wonder what the ratio of F1.4 sales to F1.4 sales really is. It makes sense to fill out the other gaps in the Z lens line up first. The 20mm 1.8 is proving to be a very popular Astro photography lens at a good price. Updating the firmware on the Z6ii and 7ii is however well overdue. 3D tracking is needed.

As soon as the Z 24-70mm f/2.8 lens became available I switched from my Nikon DSLR to a first generation Z6. I was able to make this camera work for my concert photography (including a first generation Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 with FTZ adapter). I found the delay of the release of the Z 70-200mm f/2.8 very frustrating, but swapped my F-mount for the Z-mount version as soon as it became available. I purchased my Z9 a few months ago (without pre-ordering one, just contacted a local dealer to inform me when and if one became available) and I love it to death. With just the Z9 (the Z6 is my backup camera) and my two Z mount lenses I'm very happy shooting shows and getting great results. There are several Z mount lenses on my bucket list (the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 to complete the holy trinity and the Z 100-400 for sound board shoots) and I would certainly buy them if I had the money for them. Don't understand the complaints a lot of influencers on KZbin have regarding the Z9. It's a great overall camera and much cheaper than the Canon and Sony offerings that they are comparing it to.

They can have 3D tracking in all those other models including the 1st gen z6/7. It works in the D850 etc which uses a single xspeed6, so there is no excuse as to why it can't be in all the mirrorless lineup.

The D850 has a separate Multi-CAM 20K AF module that got some light off the mirror, that module does not exist in any mirrorless camera, which is why 3D tracking had to wait until the processor had enough power to do it.

@@nigerian-nightmare that doesn't really hold though if you've used a z9 which will represent _potential_ for firmware capability upgrades for the older cameras but certainly the next generation. I had the chance of using production versions of both of the R5 and the z9 on a recent trip with my camera club. The z9 wins hands down, and even if there are aspects where the R5 has a slight edge, the Nikon cameras produce a much cleaner image with higher recoverable shadow detail. My friend Wayne who brought his R5 on that trip is seriously considering a switch to the Z9. The R5 is well beyond my old 5D Mark III in terms of shadow recovery but still not matching what both Sony and Nikon are doing. To be clear, I shot Canon for 20 years before switching to the d750 in late 2016.

@@ElGrecoDaGeek Of course, I will take Z9 over R5 in a heartbeat. A used R5 can be had for 3K while Z9 is $5500 and out of stock. No affordable good af as in R5 from Nikon. Not sure why it is taking Nikon too long to come out with something to compete with Canon R5 and Sony A7siii. They have lost a lot of shooters to Sony and Canon. That's my point. I'm selling many of my Nikon gears for Canon, and they are not even selling as fast as I wish.

I was an early adopter and have been using the Z6 professionally since firmware 1.0. And it kept getting better with each upgrade. People waiting for a 1.4 lens just have to accept that 1.2 is the new 1.4. The 1.8’s are so good that you have to go to 1.2 see any kind of difference. As an owner of a Z9 I can say it’s the best digital Nikon, relative to it’s time period, that I’ve ever used. It’s value is incredible for the 2 cameras it can replace in order to get the photo and video quality and features that it gives you.

9:05 You forgot one - the noct allows for perfect linear focus pulls. The focus action is so repeatable that it even has distance markings pre-applied!

We’ve switched from Fuji to Nikon for our fashion and beauty work and I couldn’t be happier. We have a couple of Z7IIs and since a month or so a Z9. The cameras (like usually with Nikon) are excellent, but what’s really setting the system apart are the lenses. The 1.8 primes are so good that you forget about 1.4. The trinity zooms, but also lenses like the 105 macro are superb. I do agree that Nikon should forget about APS-C. Just give us a Zf (with the Z7 sensor) and use the excellent Z5 as entry level camera. Like always, Nikon doesn’t move fast, but their steps are never sideways and always big leaps. PS. the build quality and handling are great too.

i agree with the primes. I was very scheptycal about selling my 50 1.4 but man... 50 1.8 S is absolutely flawless and it's totally worth it. I don't like that it's more expensive than the previous niftys, but it also makes you forget about losing image quality when shooing wide open because it doesnt happen

Very positive about Nikon-not just their future but their present as well. I owned the Canon R5 for nearly two years and while I generally loved the camera’s capabilities, there were some handling, ergonomic and image quality issues that ultimately sent it packing. Nikon’s Z 7II may not be perfect but for the way I work and the subject matter, its autofocus is no less effective, its handling is superior and the image quality is flat out better, without the R5’s nasty magenta shift in recovered shadows. And then there are the lenses, where Nikon’s Z 24-120 S/4 trounces Canon’s RF 24-105/4L in every aspect, and Nikon’s Z 50/1.8 is a better portable standard lens than Canon’s dinky RF 50/1.8. I think Nikon final has a clue where they’re headed and are doing an admirable job executing.

The 1.8 primes from Nikon are absolutely incredible. Not only are they chart-topping in performance, but they are super light, SUPER affordable, ultra fast and smooth focusing for video, very quiet, and they even look great! You can buy a set of three of them for the same price as some of the more expensive 1.2 primes, especially since they go on sale so often. They are so good that I switched over to Nikon and had enough $$$ left over to splurge on the 70-200 S which is the best zoom lens I have ever seen on paper or in the real world. It has such high resolution that it crops in on the Z9 and produces images sharper than my 400mm lens on my last system which stunned me. I recently have purchased the 600mm f4G on Nikon and the 70-200S crops extremely favorably against that too which just blows my mind. Now I understand what "lens resolution" really is!

Very optimistic. I have been using Nikon since film days with the Nikkormat FT3. Have amassed a good number of lenses and so I'm quite tied to the Nikon system. Therefore very happy to see the Z9 and have ordered one to update my Z7. While there can be improvements to the Z7, I have managed to get shots I really enjoy with that camera. I have used it for portraits, kids, and birds in flight. Looking forward to even higher hit rates. Given that Nikon have in fact reduced the complexity of the hardware, I'm very optimistic that the great features of the Z9 will show up in new lower tier cameras. Also, I like their lens introduction sequence, aside from the unicorn 50 mm 0.95, the rest have been reasonably affordable useful lenses. I just love the 70-200 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8. Great versatile lenses.

Great video! I’ve done the whole switching thing over the last 4 years ….dropped canon DSLR’s went to Fuji xt3 and Sony a7r2 then added Fuji medium format and now Nikon Z7 and 6. Love them. I’m sold on Nikon as main work horses and Fuji medium format for specialty stuff. Sony doesn’t do it for me personally even though I still use the a7rii as my beater daily carry in monochrome mode as I prefer black and white in general. I hate their colors. Nikons just feel like real cameras and the straight out of the camera jpegs and even the raw files look great require less processing. I LOVE the 50mm f1.8 it’s amazing and yes I went and got a few of the g lenses and ftz adapter to use the 58mm f1.4 and the 85mm f1.4. Had to have faster glass but it was worth it. I never thought I would ever go Nikon but with all its faults I just prefer them. I’m waiting on the 3D autofocus and will upgrade the z7 and z6 when they get that tech but for now I’m happy

I always fail to understand why people are so infatuated with tech specs and features in cameras that most will never need, use or master because of the complexity. This goes for any brand, not specially for Nikon. What I need is pretty basic: good image resolution, low high ISO noise, good ergonomics and an uncluttered UI, the rest is PASM, an eye for scene and composition and experience, that’s why I usually keep my gear longer than average. Of course, I’m happy about technical improvements, but in the end it’s always the the resulting image that counts and a that I’m happy with my Z6II as it is.

I like both of these guy and I watch their videos from time to time. This video is a great example of how pampered "photographers" (camera nerds, really) are these days. F1.4 primes? Eye detect AF? Who cares. Learn how to shoot on film and you'll be a LOT more appreciative of your current digital camera. I know I have.

Very optimistic. I always had faith that Nikon would pull it off. They were slow to the start but it is obvious they were watching the competition. The z9 is an amazing camera and I am personally really happy with the glass they have released. I have the f/4(ish) trinity and for landscape its amazing light glass super sharp even wide open.. I think the 1.8s are great affordable glass. The 20/1.8 is stellar for astro but I will admit Id love to see a 14 or 20/1.2 or 1.4, maybe even a 24/1.2 but they are about to release an 85/1.2 which should be a beauty. But the z9 is at heart an action camera so I feel thats why Nikon is currently leaning on the other side of the range ... 100-400, 400/2.8, 800/6.3 .. coming 400/4.5?, 200-600, 600/4.Tons of stellar long glass options. I do hope we see the z9 tech filter down into other bodies and the z6/7ii are both still in firmware 1.xx so Im sure more is coming. ... im still hoping for a z8 to be the d500 replacement optional grip crop sensor 24mpx 30fps raw z9 focusing system. Make the z6 line video heavy and a low light monster (astro etc), the z7 line the d850 replacement and bump it to a 60mpx sensor(for the iii obviosuly not in firmware) and the z8 the d500 replacement, crop sensor probuild quality ultra high speed action camera (or even make the zfc the d500 replacemnt and the z8 medium format)

I’m a Nikon film shooter. In a simpler time, Nikon reigned supreme, and I am optimistic that they can once again take that position. If more Z9 tech trickles down to more affordable cameras in Nikon’s range, I may seriously consider getting a non-entry level digital camera.

I still love it. Lightweight, relatively cheap, great image quality. I have shot surgery pictures with the standard kit zoom. You have very special lighting conditions. Pictures look great. I prefer them over my D750. With. FtZ Adapter and Sigma 18-35 f1.8 it even gets better.

I have the 800mm 6.3 and it focuses really fast on the z9. I am not sure why dpreview copy focuses slow but testing the af speed at aperture f20 and shutter speed of 1/1250 bumping iso to 9000 wouldn’t be the best way to test it.

Here's hoping we get a Z6/7ii update soon. I've been saying it for years, the best thing about the Z system is the lenses. That 50mm 1.8 is super dreamy and worth sticking with on its own.

@@camilo8cheryl I don't think 50.2 is very good. Instead, it is heavy and the focusing speed is slow. At least, the focusing speed of 50.8 is faster than 50.2, and the image quality is not inferior to 50.2. The only advantage is that it has more than one aperture.

The OG Z6/Z7 got firmware updates into November 2021 with 3.40, the Z6ii/Z7ii are still on 1.40, so I expect many more firmware updates, and hope we get more information on their faster 85mm on their roadmap, and hopefully a faster 35mm too, overall, i'm hopeful, but we need to see announcements on firmware, cameras, and new lenses.

Z6/7 were first gen products, so many updates should be expected. I am doubtful my Z7ii will receive any significant improvements... that being said, I have absolutely no issues with the camera and will likely not upgrade right away.

I heard a Nikon engineer admit the Z6 II has about 10% the processing power of the Z9. So basically its an off the shelf Sony sensor with an ill suited SLR processor taped on the back and rushed out to fill a hole they left in the market. IMO its not going to get any better its sadly abandoned by Nikon now the Z9 is out and works. I find the AF poor at best on my Z6 II and people AF and animal AF isnt even as good as my ageing A7 III. I have to use single point for most things and even then it can lose focus on stationary subject.

And the EXPEED6 was a new processor for the Z6/Z7, which the D6 later used. The A7III was released earlier the same year as the Z6, so they're going to be comparable in overall processing power (with the Z6II almost doubling it), but Sony had been working on their mirrorless AF since 2013.

The reason I say admit is because people keep saying Nikon are going to bring out firmware and add 3d tracking, better animal/people detection and improve the AF (which IMO it needs). But the engineer was basically saying due to the mark II only having 10% of the processing power of the Z9 its not going to happen, thats it. It won't really get any better than it is now. Sadly The Z6 II came out 2 years after the A7 III so should have been at least as good if not better (and shouldn't have been released till it was). I own both and compared to the A7 III the Z6 II with V1 firmware was in IMO basically unusable in a lot of situations, way too slow and inaccurate (though brilliant image quality if you got the shot). With the current SW on the A7 III and Z6 II its still miles off the A7 in nearly every situation for me. I have to say I never owned an original Z6 but from what I understand it was an rush unfinished prototype that shouldn't have been released. I find for gigs the Z6 II is too slow, weddings the face detect is poor and wildlife its too slow and cant see even a dog with a stick its mouth. I go back to my D500 often.

I was a Nikon shooter since the film days, and had great hopes when they entered the mirrorless realm. Those hope were quickly dashed as I needed good video features, and the Z6 and Z7 didn't support 10 bit 422 colors and the AF in video was still subpar, especially with the FTZ adapter. Still, I waited to see what they would do with a followup model before trading in my D800 (and separate video camera) for another brand, but eventually gave up and went with Lumix last year. Yes, the Z9 is a great camera, and if this had come out a couple of years ago, I might still be a Nikon shooter. At this point, trading in practically new glass isn't cost-effective, so I'm committed to my new system for the next several years.

Thank you for this video. I’m a long time Nikon shooter and I recently picked up a Z6 & Z7 and I think Nikon has put a lot of effort into designing the Z-mount. The native glass, even the f1.8 lenses, are incredibly good and I actually prefer those over any f1.4 lenses in my bag. I think Nikon will put their R&D into f1.2 lenses next and I love the fact that you can adapt so much of the F-mount lenses and even Sony e-mount lenses with the right adapter. I’m optimistic that Nikon will bring new possibilities to content creators in the future. They did this with the Nikon D90 as the first DSLR with video features (which was my first DSLR camera) and they will surely do it again. But again, thanks for giving Nikon some credit in such a competitive industry.

I am optimistic. My Z9 is a very special camera. It has a definite personality as well. However I do like the Z6ii as my 2nd camera as well. It works well. I would love some extra features from the Z9 playbook (3D). If they do bring out a D500 replacement in mirrorless form, (Z500?) the sales rush that we saw for the Z9 will probably be repeated, and that is surely solid ground for optimism.

ADD virtual horizon know from DSLR (from Z9 only) 3. ADD lock for focus point know from DSLR (from Z9 only) 4. ADD zebra in photo mode (none) 5. ADD eye/face detection on/off switch (none) 6. ADD clean view in LCD or EVF (from Z6ii/Z7ii) 7. ADD crop frames when you choose different crop mode for example 16:9 (from Z9 only) 8. ADD DX-mode frames in viewfinder, now it just magnifing the view instead of drawing a frame of DX-format (none) 9. ADD distance scale with mt/ft, now its just a simple bar (none) It all can be fixed/added by firmwares update. And I do not mind if Z6 will slow down with above updates because it has only one processor. But NIKON forgot about us - Z6 users 😞

They've been really quiet about the 200-600. I just gave up and got a Tamron 150-600 G2 (to replace my G1) instead. The Nikon lens will likely be better (and more expensive) but who knows when it'll actually be available.

As for Chris's comment on 3D AF in the Z6/Z7 I wonder if part of it is hardware limitation. Maybe Nikon hasn't found a good way to implement 3D AF on non-stacked sensors. In the DSLR days it used a separate AF module (and presumably processing of some sort) so the task was sort of split up versus being on-sensor. The other reason I think is that they omitted cross-hair type AF points, which I've been told is one of the keys to the DSLRs faster AF, and something the Z's lack (except the Z9 maybe). But I'm thinking there is more to it than just "double the processing power". The processors may be able to handle it but if the on-sensor AF implementation itself (aside from processing power) can't handle it, then that's where the problem probably is and would limit Nikon on how they could improve it.

@@richrollin4867 for real? spec weight of the z7ii is 705 g with battery. the z9 with batts is 1340 g. that's tremendous! for all of the things i use these cameras for: real estate, event, personal use (beach, hike etc), that weight difference is all of the difference. i can throw pretty much any lens i have onto my z7 and still have a lower weight/ smaller form factor than just the z9 by itself. it makes ALL of the difference-- that built-in grip. not everyone needs that damned thing.

Great video. A couple of notes. Given Nikon’s length of time in the mirrorless market, their lens rollout speed has been reasonable. Optically, their f1.8s are better than nearly all their F mount (and most other manufacturer’s) previous f1.4 glass. They also have the advantage of being fairly light for the performance and weather sealing they provide. Though not cheap, they are excellent value for money. I acknowledge that despite the f1.8s advantages there are many people who will reach a different conclusion regarding the value proposition and want f1.4s. I do think, based on the performance of the 50 mm f1.2, when the f1.2 85 & 35 mm (I realize there hasn’’t been a 35mm f1.2 announcement) hit the market, they will be SPECTACULAR. As a person who has Z6 & Z7 bodies, I LOVE their quality and performance. I realize under some conditions their autofocus are bested by comparable Sony and Canon models. Having said that, Nikon’s strengths in other areas, across the board performance, and the brand’s long term commitment to their customers and the art of photography make me confident in them. In faIrness, this is my 3rd round with Nikon, so I am admittedly somewhat biased. On the other hand, they earned it. I am thankful for the contributions of Sony, Canon, Fuji, Lumix, Leica, and others to the market. Overall, regardless of your ultimate brand choice, it only gets better for consumers of photography and video equipment. I am hoping Nikon has a fantastic year.

I’m in agreement with any and all points regarding Nikon’s (and Canon’s) historical neglect for APS-C. Nikon made tons of capable APS-C DSLR bodies (at one point, I owned a D7000, and then a D500) but hardly any worthwhile lenses for them (all of my lenses were full-frame). I think they need to rid themselves of the notion that “APS-C is just a stepping stone to full-frame” and either commit to making a worthy lens selection for the format, or just make full-frame cameras. Fujifilm has shown that you can make a compelling system for APS-C, so there’s no reason to leave it as “the beginner’s choice” and saddle it with sad kit lenses. Also, the reason why I never considered buying a Nikon mirrorless camera is because I agree with Chris - there’s been no visible movement on updating the Z6 II or Z7 II to perform better for photographers. As Marques Brownlee once said, never buy technology today based on a promise of future performance.

Nikon has a bright future - I never doubted this even before the Z9 - it was obvious to me that they were working on something big - what choice did they have unless they were willing to go out of business - something that Japanese companies never take lightly and will fight like hell to avoid. It is true that the low light AF acquisition on the Nikon models below the Z9 is somewhat inadequate and really hurts us event shooters - this is something that I would like to see remedied in firmware more than adding 3D tracking. They can add 3D tracking to the next generation of cameras with the Expeed 7 processor to drive it. Speaking of new cameras - that is what Nikon needs now more than anything - an update to the Z6/7 and/or a Z8 - also a Z90 (D500) replacement that should kick the snot out of the new R7 from Canon - but admittedly it would be much higher in price to the tune of $1k higher. Finally, I wondering on your take of the RED lawsuit? Do you think that a RED victory could mean that Nikon would have to remove NRAW and ProRes Raw from the Z9 internally in the United States - I think this would be hurtful for sure and is the only thing that I think looks like a potential negative on the horizon. Your thoughts? Oh yeah, and I also agree that Nikon needs a full line of 1.2 glass (i.e. the long awaited 85mm and a 35mm). As for 1.4's I think this would be nice down the road, but honestly they should just collaborate with a respectable 3rd party to make these if its too much to chew right now. In the meantime we need the full 1.2 line up. I think between the 1.8's (of which I own and use every one), and the 1.2's (assuming an 85 and a 35 in addition to the 50 - the 50 I also have), there is enough of a choice for the lion's share of the market. If you are en event shooter, the 1.8's are more than sufficient - especially in light of how clean higher ISO's are in the Z6II for example). Also, the 1.8's are small and light and perfect for lugging all day. On the other hand, for the pro portrait and landscape crowd (which I am also a member of) the 1.2's are great - size and weight no longer really matter in this niche - just optical awesomeness. 1.4's are sort of a compromise between these two poles, and although I agree they are useful and probably would be desirable to many, this could be filled by 3rd parties - maybe that is what Nikon means by 'business partnerships' in their future report - here is hoping! I agree that Nikon will mainly stick with a f/1.2 lens lineup rather than f/1.4, mainly because the mount allows it and differentiation is clearer. The 85mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.4G were so similar, many found the 4x price ratio too much for not enough benefit. With the 50 f/1.8S and 50 f/1.2S, the 3-4x price ratio is easier to at least understand, with better secondary IQ factors which a segment of Nikon photographers will appreciate. I think you're right, the same will happen with the 85 f/1.2S and 35 f/1.2S. I would give Red less than a 20% chance of winning their lawsuit (though Nikon may reach a "licensing" settlement before going to court). Intellectual property for compression techniques can be very difficult to enforce. And Nikon can respond that they are not competing in the same market, simply by showing the picture of the RED rig from their website, something that will rarely be done with a Z9.

As they say, that's not a bug, it's a feature. If you read Thom Hogan's website, you know he feels all the major camera manufacturers are being forced to move upscale: ditch entry-level/mid-market cameras entirely (because phones) and concentrate on selling fewer but costlier cameras to a smaller number of richer customers. In the case of Nikon, that's an explicit strategy, and so far it's been successful for them in terms of profit. But it's kind of painful when your favorite camera company tells you, “Get lost, peasant, we don't want you to aspire to our cameras because you're too poor.”

They mostly chose Sony due to Sony's huge influencer program. But at the time Sony had poor menu and autofocus and some quality control issues. So now people are less inclined to listen to influencers. So you have the contraction of a market due to cellphone. Yet people who may wish say longer lenses may want to invest but the low end is disappearing. The low end traditionally created the path to the people who now have money.

Until now, Z6ii/Z7ii still has missed auto focus issues occasionally not every time though .. so eye af still not reliable on distant static subjects..specially on backlit subjects. Eye af was spot on the face but when you pixel peep, focus is kind of back or front focus🤦🏻‍♂️

As an APS C user, I'm not so optimistic. Nikon never supported DX properly. On the other hand, Sony just announced 3 fast, compact UWA AF lenses for APS-C. If Nikon just came out with one, like an 11 1.8, I'd be excited. I am not tempted by FF; as a non-pro, it's just not necessary. I want light compact APS-C for travel. If they did that, I might come back, because I don't really like using my a6400. (Also, I want an EVF with higher than 2.36m "dots." That's just unacceptable, IMO. )

I like Nikon's more orthodox classic approach to lenses. Canon RF line as a whole is more ... strange. Somewhere Canon seems to offer more features, but at the same time with wierd cospromises (like dark corners on 14-35 or retractable autofocus with loud motor on 85 2). Canon feel free to experiment on RF because continues to rely on the EF as its core line of obvious and simple lenses, while Nikon decided to make a complete system again. But the problem is that despite the excellent compatibility, and the fact that sigmas finally gets in focus on RF bodies, this is not an ideal option. I think many canonists want new motors and compactness on balanced "boring" lenses.

Honestly - I do not need f/1.4 lenses. If the 1.8s are well made (like we saw not only with the Z ones, but with several of the G ones for FX mount), I'm perfectly fine with these. We are talking about 0.5 stops of light. It's not important, especially with Nikon sensors being so good in low light/high ISO. I would gladly stick to the smaller and more affordable 1.8s, than pay for and carry along the bigger ones for marginal advantage.

But Nikon, the company, is quite a bit smaller than Canon or especially Sony, which is a giant. So I think they're doing the best they can with their resources, especially given that more than half the life of the Z-system has included the pandemic.

I'd be more optimistic if we had firmware 2.x for my Z7II and the Zfc features (1/3 grid, backup settings, and Wide (L People) in my Z50. However, after shopping for lenses for an R7 the grass isn't much greener for Canon. I even tried an A7M4 and it was not for me due to the color rendering of JPG's, but it checked off all the boxes on paper. Nikon still doesn't offer a single FX sensor with a fully articulating screen, and needs to workout their AF-C! I get 91% hit rates shooting well lit sports, but that 9% is usually a key/money shot.

Granted, I am mostly a landscape/cityscape shooter, but I absolutely love my Z Nikons. The optics are fantastic. The colours are gorgeous. Yet, I can pop on tons of my old legacy glass, some of it 50 years old, for a whole different shooting vibe. Do I wish they had Canon R AF? Yes, but for 90% of what I shoot, it’s irrelevant.

Nikon isn't getting credit for any of their cameras lately because they aren't focusing on what is "hip" and "in" these days. They aren't specifically marketing towards vloggers and youtubers (hence no real front facing screen on FF) and so I don't think they are getting tested and used as much. I have a Z6, not a Z6ii, and aside from a lack of support from other companies (Ronin gimbals don't support much Nikon) I can do anything anyone else can with minimal difference. I do wish they made a front facing screen on the Z6 though, lol. I like to shoot low and those help a ton.

If a Z7III is $3-3.5k, and the Z9 is $5.5k, I doubt Nikon will want to squeeze in a Z8 for $4.5k. They're working hard enough to produce enough cameras that it seems easier to stick with the body designs which are mainly in production.

Been a Nikon shooter since I got a Nikon FE2 as a birthday present in the 1980s. Today shooting hybrid film/digital with FM3a/F6+D5 and 24/35/58/85/105 1.4. When my finances allow it I would probably go for a Z9 but I could also see myself going for the D6 as the best f-mount body and just stay there. A D850 upgrade with better liveview AF (similar to D780) would be nice too but I don't expect that coming from Nikon. Then about the lack of fast primes in Z mount. If there was a 1.2 series of primes including 24, 35, 85, 105 it would be more of a reason to upgrade. But then Z9 + 24,35,50,85,105 1.2 would be serious money. Maybe at that point I would just look at the Fuji GFX 100s instead. If Nikon released a full frame ZFc with retro styled compact primes (like the 28mm) I would be very tempted. But if one is allowed to dream, why not a mirrorless full frame ZFc with F-mount?

The Z50 doesn’t really need an arsenal of APS-C lenses since it’s really a walk around/ street photography camera. Just slap say the Z28/2.8 on it and you’re good to go. For other applications you’ve got everything from a Z5, Z6, Z7 to a Z9, and lenses reaching out to 800mm, plus TCs.
