I was all about it for F Mount.. this lens let me fly through a ton of looks in the studio for high volume commercial work. Not having to swap lenses and jsut flying through perspectives allowed me to get more options for clients faster and shoot more for the day. That lens was great even with a few short comings. But they seemed to have fix all those issues and threw in the control ring plus function button. It’s also def better construction in my opinion… I swear if they made a 2.8 version while it’s be huge and pricey I’d rob a bank for it lol

I just bought this lens today expecting it Friday. I struggle with the weight of my 2.8 and 1.8 lenses as I travel on vacations. My wife tells me there is no wonder your back hurts every time she picks up my bag. I'm going to Italy in a few months and I intend to go with only 2 lenses the 24-120 for every day and my 50mm 1.8 for evening candids. Thank you for your review!

As a tip, in the nikon store europe (probably usa too), usually they give you a coupon code of 15% (or 30%) on non discounted products, even if you buy just like a backpack or stuff. So i got the small 40mm f2 there, got the coupon code, and got the 24-120 f4 at a "low" price because basically every retailer here sales it for the same full price since its out

Looks like another winner for travel and general shooting. I have and love the 24-70 f/4 S and use it on a high percentage of paid shoots, it is that good so the 24-120 might be the next addition when the 70-200 is more weight and size than needed. Tomorrow I have a session of 40 actors for audition videos and portraits so the D850 will be back up again and Z6 with 85 1.8 S and 24-70 f/4 for the videos. Every time I get flooded with posts complaining about the Z6 cameras not being good enough or impossible to focus I simply block them now. After all this time if they have not read their manual or learned how to use the camera they are not worth wasting time trying to help. Just like last week when shot a master class and portfolio images for child actors, and their mothers, not a single wasted frame. Why every shot in events, dance recitals, ballet, and stage plays, the images just turn out great but these people are buying $3k in a camera and a lens and do not bother learning how to use the camera. Wednesday I shot an entire play premiere plus hundreds of stills in low ambient light looking into spots,a bad combination. the Z6 tracked the actors all over the stage well, with almost no intervention by me while I shot stills. Afterward, we did interviews of the audience members for later promotions and the lead actor greeting and signing autographs for fans was as simple as one could want. Zero missed focus. The Z6 over 3 years ago was the fastest return on investment in years. The shot of the sun in the frame was the most impressive trait, no F mount would handle that as well.

Same for me, the 24-70f4s gives me al great lens for all situations. I always rent the 24-70f2.8s for bigger harder lighted gigs and both run stellar on my z6 and even more since the 3.40 update. For everything not sports there far better than people say.

I wanted this as a kit lens on day one release of the original Z6. I have been using the F-mount version and FTZ since I got my Z5. I had the lens and use it with my D700 and D800 for years. This lens found a home, warts and all, among wedding and event photographers all over. I think of this lens like a minivan, not especially cool or sexy like it's sporty f2.8 brethren, but reliable, versatile, and affordable. I just can't use those 24-70 class lenses anymore because I find I am constantly bumping into that upper focal length and the internal debate starts; do I swap cameras, do I swap lenses, or do I just make do and crop it after the fact. With the 24-120, I don't have that issue nearly as often. Thanks for the preview, I look forward to seeing more real life use. Direct comparison to the F-mount 24-120 would be interesting.

The examples of controlled CA, sharpness and depth has me sold. I was about to pull the trigger on the 24-200 but that is not an S lens and the trade off is that one is VR and the 24-120 is not. Hi Matt. To reveal the Chromatic Aberration and Distortion, just uncheck these boxes or use the sliders in the Lens Correction. Also set the Purple Fringing to zero. This will show the lens's uncorrected image. When doing that for the Z24-200 for images @24mm you are in for a little shock when looking at the corners which is one of the reasons I want to trade that one for the Z24-120.

I'm so happy. Just received my 24-120! I don't know why but it seems so much better than the 24-70f4 kit lens, although that was still great. First impressions I've noticed it has better contrast, dynamic range and most noticeable is the sound & action when taking a shot. Why does it feel sooo much snappier than my other lenses? Surely it should be the same when the shutter speed is equal...what am I hearing? Less internal action?

Pre-ordered it the moment it was announced. This is THE lens I've been looking forward to since I got my first gen Z6. Was expecting 24-105, so was pleasantly surprised when they added the extra 15mm to the long end. Reason: Wanted a solid zoom for portraits. Already have the 85mm 1.8, and while that lens is great outdoors with plenty of space to move around, it's less ideal for indoors studio shoots when where I can move is limited. Used to own a DX sensor DSLR with a 24-70 2.8 (functionally equivalent to a 36-105), so this is the perfect replacement.
@dicekolev53603 жыл бұрын
How come it can be perfect replacement when it's f4 compare to the 1.8's and 2.8's... The right word is "compromise", not "replacement". #nohate haha
@KaybeCA3 жыл бұрын
@@dicekolev5360 Depth of field of a F2.8 on a crop sensor is (roughly) equivalent to an F4 on a full frame. Only advantage to a 2.8 in that scenario would be for low light which is a non-issue when using strobes. And the 85mm doesn't zoom, so it's entirely dependent on photographer's movement to compose. If I have plenty of leg room, I'd use the 85. Okay, that and me not being lazy. Takes less energy to move a zoom ring than constantly moving back and forth, lol.

@@KaybeCA Of course, you're correct but there is no perfect lens, isn't it ;D My dream have always been shooting in any possible conditions (day, night, rain, snow, fog...) so the right answer for all alongside with quality is the prime lenses as much as I'd like to carry 1-2 lenses rather than 4 and waiting 5th at the moment ;D

If you go into lens corrections on C1, have a look what profile is applied. If they've already updated for the 24-120/4 the profil will be listed. Otherwise "generic" or "none" - would have to have a dig through some files. The more important question is, whether adding the money gained from selling a 24-120/4 VR and Z24-70/4 which I purchased to replace it counts to put together the funds for one of these. Perfect lens for travel - good balance of size & aperture. And the 24-120 range gets you quite far. Knowing it wasn't going to be cheap (vs a used 24-70) and the then expected -105 range made me pass on it.

It’s on order. And along with the 100-400 which is also on order, they will make a great two lens travel kit. Or for a one lens, I’ll fall back on my 24-200.

Looking realy great. Also think about to get one, wanted to see some comparison to the 24-70 f4, both, the picture quality and a quick size cpomparission. Also, your videos are made realy good :)

Have yet to see anyone testing the focusing of this lens. Especially for fast moving subjects. I imagine its quick, just have not seen a demonstration. I have one ordered, just anxiously waiting.

I’m on a pre-order list for it, and this video makes me hope it comes quickly. I’ll trade my 24-70 f4 for it. Happy Christmas. Love the shorts and reindeer sweater combo.

I did trade my 24-70 for the 24-120 this past weekend. But I'm going to get the 24-70 back and keep the 24-120 also. They only offered me $220 for the 24-70.

The closest thing to this which I’m currently using i would say is is the 70-200 f/4 for the F mount with an FTZ adapter. I’d love to see how it compares to that one. I bought a used one for about 800$ Canadian. This new lens is about 1500$ Canadian. It would be awesome to see how each compares. Great content by the way!

Matt, am i to understand if my Z7 II or Z8 has VR turned on, it is the same as having a lens with VR. The 24-120 F4s doesn't have VR and i don't think you mention that. Is this an issue?? thanks

Great first look Matt .. have to say though - with that music in the 1st half ... I kept waiting for some Roswell Gray to walk around the corner.

After using Nikon for 30+ years, switched to Sony four years ago but still miss the Nikon color. Finally ordered a Z6 ii kit and this lens. This is a very practical range, I have traveled with a single Sony 24-105 f4 and was very happy with the range. The only thing I wish is lens VR, which is very useful in travel handheld and often moving situation to get clear shots. Both canon and Sony 24-105 are stabilized, why Nikon didn’t?

From my testing the IBIS seems to be enough ... simply does not need it ... :) I will look into it further.

I have the 24-200 f4-6.3 for travel, how would you compare this lens to the new 24-120 F4?

I tested last weekend this Nikkor Z 24-120 F4 s against my Nikkor Z 24-70 F4 using same exposures, same composition, same settings and the difference is astronomical, definitely the Nikkor Z 24-70 is by far sharper throughout the focal range from 24 to 70 mm.
