My wife used this exact setup since she doesn’t like my Z9 180-600 setup and she had no issues with the weight. She was able to snag some great racing shots with it but I love it for the travel aspect. Fantastic travel lens. I do have serious concern about using it in dusty/windy and wet conditions as you can hear the air sucking/blowing as you zoom in and out.

I got this last month and it stick on my Zf for all of my trip. Perfect travel lens for flowers and birds.

How does the lens on the Zf, is it still make the experience fun? Is this setup you would bring to mall and everyday photos and videos?

Glad to see the varied shots and "passable" sharpness observation which is good enough for me. Just bought it for trip to Iceland this fall so don't have to change lens in the field. Will certainly carry a micro cloth to wipe down the barrel - thanks for the tip.

I have been delving with the Nikon AF-S & AI Micros with adapters on different camera systems. Manual Focusing the lenses were great in performance. I even used the FTZ adapters for the Z Mirrorless Cameras and also used some G Lenses. I finally got my hands on this beautiful lens and to my surprise I get better images as Becky did at 400mm doing closeups. Just get the right distance from the object and the images were spectacular. One lens to rule them for all outings. So I keep this lens on my Z8 and the 24-120mm on my Z9. Now what camera should I put the 24-200mm on? Better yet the 100-400mm or even more awesome the 180-600mm. Cheers!

Thank you both and Tilley you helped out immensely! The dog shots are primarily what I'll be shooting but with any bird or bug passing by well of course. With post processing being what it is now the background can be blurred out if needed. Again thanks and big treat to Tilley

I sold my 24-200 to afford this lens. I have no regrets. For a one lens travel solution, or a two lens garden photography solution with the Z 105 macro, it is nearly perfect. It even fits in the same old Nikon case that the 105 does.

Love the Tilly photo at 2:27. So it's a lazy lens for us lazy photographers. I've gone back and forth on buying this lens. Not sure if I heard you say it is a possibly sharp lens. or more likely it is a passably sharp lens. Old guy ears and too lazy to scroll back. Think I'll have to rent one to try out. Thanks - Tim

As you said it is the perfect all around lens. Captured Tilly just well. I have the 24-120mm lens. But could see me getting it at one time ago. Perfect for just a time out where you don’t feel like bring a bag full of kit. Have a great week Becky and Kon. Thanks for sharing Tilley with us.📷☕️🐕

I've had this lens for a month or so and I've had it mounted on my Zf. I bought it to replace my 24-200 because I wanted more reach. I wish it also was 24mm on the short end, but I realize that some compromises had to be made. So far I'm enjoying it very much! It's good for shooting action (birds, pets, youth sports), and like Becky, I've found that shooting flower blossoms at 400mm works quite well. It's not designed for low light situations, but that's its only serious limitation. Thank you both for another informative video. And it's always great to see Tilly the Wonder Dog frolicking outside! 😀🐕😀

it's a surprisingly good "little" lens! I was delighted that the balance remains pretty good even when fully extended at full zoom. It's definitely sharper than the z24-200 that I traded in ! A very very good holiday/travel lens when you don't want to cart a load of gear about. I've had it for a few weeks, and it's not been off my Z8 since. It's a great lens.

I know of a few persons here in the US who have sold their 24-200 in order to buy this lens. I did as well, and I'm very pleasantly surprised by its sharpness and versatility. It will be the only lens I take with me on summer outings!

I guess, like many things, it's a matter of use-case. You (Kon and Becky) love primes; me, not so much. This past week, I shot about 50,000 frames on a week-long project. Most were shot with the Z9 using a Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 S. I also used that camera with the Nikon Z 180-600. With the Z8, I mostly used the Z 24-120mm f4 S, but also used the Nikon Z 105mm f2.8 Macro lens. In my D850, Z6ii and Z7ii days I owned 3 or 4 primes, but (because of use-case) most of my frames were shot using zooms. While I have the Nikon Z 24-200mm lens, I think I may purchase the 24-400mm lens and perhaps give the 24-200 to one of my daughters. My opinion is that the Nikon zoom lenses that I have used are so sharp and versatile, that primes are a luxury that I'm not convinced I would use that much.

I'm just here for Tilly 🥰🐶 Great review & info, looks like an ideal family outing & hiking lens, for casual-carry days. I wonder what Nikon will surprise us with this year? 😎

I've been very happy with the lens. I bought this to replace my f-mount 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 which is noticeably heavier and larger when you include the FTZ and hood. Like you mentioned, it's a little dark for an indoor lens, but if you're looking for an outdoor walkabout lens, then this is a fantastic option. It's a great storyteller lens, as you won't completely be blowing out any backgrounds at this aperture range, but you still get a nice subject separation. I definitely recommend it... matter of fact, I already sold my old 28-300.

Thank you both for an honest review. I have been anxious to hear your thoughts for some time now. Watching your review, I was thinking of the old saying, “A jack of all trades and master of none." I think it will be an excellent travel/hiking/kids sports kind of lens for many people, but maybe not for me, at least not right now.

Looks like another good walking-around lens. I've used a 24-200mm lens for years, and though it's great most of the time, I have occasionally been left wanting more on the telephoto end, especially when shooting outdoors at various events. This lens seems like a good fit for what I need. For hiking or walking long distances, probably not-I'd carry primes or much lighter zooms.

I'm an industrial photog for General Dynamics and still shoot in silver (and some chrome), most of the time using a Sinar 4x5 but am starting to use small format so work bought me a couple Nikon z7ii's. I heard that this is very economical compared to the Zeiss lenses and our leaf scanner is starting to have issues . 4x5 leaf scanners are getting hard to find. Are there distortions in the 28mm? I have the 24-200 and it is way outside tolerances for what I am shooting. Is the 28-400 the same?
@GreggRoberts13 күн бұрын
For my Sinar I'm using a 90mm Zeiss leaf shutter lens. Yes I get lens falloff but I need close and the shift thingy fixes square.

I am a lazy photographer, though take 2 cameras everywhere. As always with me, I just want to know how it performs in Infrared as much as in colour cos I want 1 lens to be able to do both! :D Whereas F mount general purpose / superzooms did pretty well in IR, the 24-120 and 24-200 have not been so great on Z, leaving me with the 24-70 F4 and 100-400 which are excellent. ended up buying a Tamron 28-150, which is a fantastic lens, but at the apertures I've historically shot infrared (around F8) I get a hotspot. Need to find somewhere to test one of these!
@Martin-nu6ym4 ай бұрын
Would love to know that too. That would free up space and weight for me for carrying one visible light and one full spectrum camera.

FYI check out Thom Hogan's review of this lens - he thinks it is very good for IR photography!!
@ScottRae4 ай бұрын
@@johnhudson666 He does, doesn't he! This could be perfect!! My biggest issue has been having to use my 24-200 on my colour Z7 because it doesn't work on my full spectrum Z5, where I'm having to use my higher quality glass, which makes little sense. This could also mean I could sell my 24-200 to offset the cost, as I'm covered with other lenses! Yey! :D Not that the 24-200 is a bad lens at all, wouldn't even be considering getting rid if it worked in IR! Cancel Reply
@ScottRae4 ай бұрын
@@Martin-nu6ym This was my original plan when I went full spectrum with my Z5 (I bought the Z5 and the 24-200 kit for this purpose! DOH!), but still find myself carrying both the Z5 and my colour Z7. The lens hotspot issue really doesn't help, but also, as I said, I'm lazy and it turns out too lazy to have to dig my on sensor Kolari filters out my bag, fiddle around with the filter tool and swap when I want to change! I'll tend to shoot with 1 filter on that camera all day. On lens filters were going to be astronomically expensive when my biggest lens has an 88mm thread! If / when I upgrade my Z7 (and the Z8 is really tempting me) then the ability to have 2 sets of lenses across the whole range might make me consider going full spectrum on that - what fun having 2 full spectrum cameras might be!
@b34k974 ай бұрын
There's no way this matches 24-70mm f/4 S, but just with longer range. I don't doubt it's passably sharp, but the S line zooms are on another level.

Wow so happen you guys make this video after I am sure again that I want to buy this lens and the Zf! Also thanks for showing you can get a full person in frame with blurry background, I not a bokeh person, I prefer to have stories in frame hence f4 and beyond but just I have some ideas that might need to have some blurry background but with full persons in frame, this lens with now your confirmation, is sure for me, I hope more lens designer can make lens that is meant for fully in focus most of the time which allow the lens to be smaller as well, this is one of it, hope there will be more of its kind! Also, I hope you can let Nikon know or Nikon designer will see this, please make Yellow colour of leather on the Zf, it's my favourite colour, if not, I might get the black one and buy a more grippy yellow color leather and replace the one on the Zf myself! Yeah! 💛

@andpenn4 ай бұрын
It's a significant improvement over the F mount 28-300mm; it is sharper and has faster autofocus. When zooming, it acts like an air compressor, moving plenty of air over the memory card slots. I will be interested to see if all this air movement results in more sensor dust over time. Overall, I am happy with this lens, and it is great for travelling, especially now that our local airline is weighing all carry-on baggage and restricting us to 7kg.
