The Nikon Z 40mm f/2 is a compact and extremely affordable member of the Z full-frame family. Matt and Joe slug it out to see who can get the best shots from the 40mm in a very short space of time. Set fourth !!!

Great concept for a video. I would definitely like to see more of these. I have two standout favorites for me. To pick one, I'll go with the dark shot of the slightly opened door. I love the way the light spilling out gradually reveals the shapes and objects around it. My close #2 is the cityscape shot with the boats in the foreground. I just switched back to Nikon about a month ago after a 4 year affair with Sony. I picked up a Z7II and a Z6 for my backup then got a Z50 as my walking around/travel camera. The 40mm was the first lens I picked up because They had one on hand and I got it so cheaply! I'm very happy with my move into the Z system.

Thanks Martin, Matt and I spoke about this earlier and we agree… round 4 felt the strongest of the night. Really interesting. Both completely different images stylistically. @@josephsworkshop75 Hi Joe, for me it's every single time the most thrilling to be out with another photographer, to share and compare the views and learn from each other! Yes, your and Matts photos are different stylistically, but both photos have strong lines, high contrast, are clear and reduced/abstract in a sense, which all appeals to me ;) Maybe your photo would be great in a 1:1 aspect ratio, too, without the leftmost edge where the bottles are. So cropping from the left. Maybe the lines would guide the eye even more to the walking person :) Interesting. From time to time I find it pleasing to be in a situation, where I have to 'make do' with seldom used gear or a lens, which wouldn't be my first choice in this situation or being under time pressure. This spurs my creativity and forces me to be open minded. And it's so joyful to get a good photo under suboptimal conditions :) Cheers, Martin

It's always something seeing the little lenses on the double gripped bodies. I also use Micro 4/3, and in Micro 4/3 you have two f8 body cap lenses, the 15mm and the 9mm fisheye. I had both a more compact micro 4/3 body and a double gripped body, and I mostly only used the body cap lenses on the double gripped bodies just because the IBIS was better. My double gripped micro 4/3 body died recently (I got it used and it was well worn when I got it) and I haven't had the time to replace it yet. Generally speaking, I do use double gripped bodies more often because my hands shake and the double grip gives me a lot more stability when shooting portrait. The small lens big body situation is a common sight in my world because of this
@josephsworkshop75
@josephsworkshop75 2 жыл бұрын
The larger bodies certainly are more comfortable. What do you use the 9mm fisheye for?
@Bunnyisms
@Bunnyisms 2 жыл бұрын
@@josephsworkshop75 I use it for people photos a lot of times. Oddly enough, at the right distance people look pretty good in it even at the edges of the frame. The distortion is more subtle than some other fisheye lenses I've used and the acceptance angle is 140°. I use the curving edges at the edges of the frame to help me draw more attention to the subject in the photo in the same way as a vignette helps frame the subject. Out of the two Olympus body cap lenses, I would say the 9mm fisheye has much more consistent quality across the frame. The 15mm has lots of aberrations as you move out of the very centre of the lens

@@MattIrwinPhotography Thanks for responding! It was a great day. I must confess, I started on the 35 z 1.8 and quickly switched to the 50 z 1.2 (by personal favorite), and the 50 stayed on the rest of the day. It’s been my favorite all around street photography lens. I have you to thank for ordering the 50 1.2 right after watching your video on it when it was released and have loved it since. That and the 500mm F PF (for bird photography) are my absolute favorites. And also the 105 mc… all the Nikkor z lenses are so good! I love your photography, you just walk out and shoot in the city. I don’t know if it’s confidence, guts or something else but I don’t feel comfortable shooting lots of strangers. Even as a traveler in another country, I always carry my camera everywhere I go and I do take shots (like the London tube) but I really struggle - once I’m away from people it’s a totally different story

Hi Blythe, I’m the same. I don’t generally point a camera at anyone I don’t know. Unless they’re out of focus or they’re a silhouette. I’m not comfortable displaying peoples faces unless I’ve received permission. I know some ‘street’ photographers take photos of anyone and everyone. I’m not comfortable to have my photo taken by strangers, so I try not to do so as well. I think most people feel the same way. London is an amazing place to shoot. Maybe play with slower shutter speeds or silhouettes to get images you like. That way people will be unrecognisable. Enjoy 👍🏻

@@josephsworkshop75 hi, I’m initially using my Z9 for military work and am out on the ranges for the next few weeks to see if I can actually catch a 5.56mm round in flight. The theory is great but I shot around 5000 images with an air rifle at home, just to get my eye in - nothing at all! That’s when I started to use maths and ballistics to figure out how to approach things. A .22in air rifle pellet travels at around 200 m/s. Thus: In 1/125 sec the pellet travels around 1.7m - using the slowest shutter speed to get 120 frames in one second In 1/250 sec the pellet travels around 0.85m In 1/500 sec the pellet travels around 0.42m In 1/1000 sec the pellet travels around 0.21m So shooting an air rifle pellet at 120fps, at ANY shutter speed faster than 1/125th sec, means that the image frame would need to be at least 2 metres wide to have any chance of catching the pellet in flight. By contrast, 5.56mm ammunition has a muzzle velocity that varies between 851 m/s and 993 m/s, so I’m using 900m/s as a notional starting point. Thus : In 1/125 sec the rifle bullet travels around 7m - using the slowest shutter speed to get 120 frames in one second In 1/250 sec the rifle bullet travels around 3.5m In 1/500 sec the rifle bullet travels around 1.7m In 1/1000 sec the rifle bullet travels around 0.85m So shooting a bullet at 120fps, at ANY shutter speed faster than 1/125th sec, means that the frame would need to be at least 7m wide, if not closer to 15 metres wide, to have any chance of catching the bullet in flight. Remember that shooting at 1/32,000th sec sounds impressive, but think about what this really means; it means that you are actually missing 31,999ths of every second! What are the chances of the bullet being in exactly the right place within the picture area for the correct 1/32,000th of a second, bearing in mind that you’ve only got 120x chances of grabbing only 120/32,000ths of every second - not good odds! In fact by photographing at slower shutter speeds you significantly increase your chances of catching a bullet in the frame, doubling your chances each time you double the shutter speed. The downside is that IF you catch the bullet in the frame it will exhibit much more movement! So while technology is wonderful, it still needs skill, allied to a huge dollop of luck and being much further away from the subject than you initially think you need to be! Time will tell…
@josephsworkshop75
@josephsworkshop75 2 жыл бұрын
@@peterrussell663 excellent project. So, is your intention to freeze the bullet as best you possibly can in frame? If so I would suggest making a low latency laser trigger. That way, when the bullet triggers the laser (by passing through its beam), a burst will commence. Start with a very wide frame with a black background. Have spotlights shining along the path of the bullet for light reflecting off it. Repeat the test without changing the variables. The bullet will appear somewhere along the path of your very long frame consistently. Then you can use “longer” lenses once you’ve figured out where the bullet will be. It’s a matter of the bullet triggering a laser triggering a shutter release. Sounds like a great project to be involved in. Is it private or commercial work? I wouldn’t rely on chance!!!
