I just love you Matt. I love your passion, enthusiasm and genuine character. It is very obvious that are speaking from your heart and with the very best of intentions. I have you to credit for renewing my own photographic passion after having neglected it for so very long. This isn't really a lens that I was too excited about, until I saw your "test" shots. They are magnificent. You have a knack for turning the mundane and ordinary streets around you into beautiful imagery. As you said "you love to paint" with obscured backgrounds and you do it as good if not better than anyone else I've ever come across. You kind of skipped past it, but I just love the shot you took of the gentleman in the upper window. You caught a real moment there and his gaze is fantastic. Don't you worry about being on Nikon's radar as an influencer. I can assure you that they are taking notice and it's quite wonderful how quickly you jumped from 10K to 15.6K subs. Only bigger and better things coming your way. All the best over the holidays and into the new year. I'm looking forward to a day when we can all safely travel again. I would love to make my way from the far Northern equator, down to your neck of the woods and perhaps visit your shop and treat you to a coffee or pint and just introduce myself. Cheers!

Shane, very kind words, thank you so much. I think always my primary joy has been about being able to find imagery anywhere. Making something out of seemingly nothing. It is a challenge I love overcoming every time I photograph. :) Yes the channel is growing in a lovely way. And I thank you and the community for being here so we can share our passions. Indeed as I hope to make it back to the northern hemisphere so enough. Look forward to catching up when you make it down under. :) Cheers Matt

Matt you spoke of something hugely inspirational here: 'To paint with light, and to paint without a focus... Painting with the out of focus background areas, and telling a story which is more an impressionistic, more an abstracted, story.' Today, I took a photograph of a Pohutukawa tree flower at Te Henga ocean beach. Initially I was going to overlook the image despite it being rich in crimsons and green, mainly because a honey bee on the flower was out of focus (I was using the Z6 and a Nikkor Z 20mm S prime at f1.8). BUT, on hearing what you said there, I'm going to keep this frame. It is gorgeous. Thanks.

Nice to see bits of Melbourne in your videos, visited your city almost two years ago and fell in love. Easily best city I've traveled to. Love to the city and your good videos on Nikon is how I found here. I went from Canon 350D and G7 Mk ii to Nikon Z6 II last week and what I can say, this is mind-blowing even when I am still learning the ropes. I made the choice especially because of cost to value, low-light capabilities and promise of Z mount. Low-light wizardry is especially good to have because that is what we get here in Finland most of the time.

It’s so funny! The 50mm f/1.2 looks relatively small in your hand. It’s actually a beast! I can’t believe how big it looks on my Z7 II. But you’re absolutely right: next to the 50mm f/1.8, it’s very large and quite heavy. I can’t wait for the 85mm f/1.2. I had the same experience when I picked up my Z7 II. One of the sales representatives came up to me and asked if I was an NPS member, because she had quite a few people waiting to buy the camera, but they didn’t receive that many units. Another sales rep saw me unboxing the 50mm f/1.2 and asked me if it was the 70-200mm. That’s how large it is.

Been a subscriber and a watcher faithfully for quite some time now. You sent me a calendar central Illinois USA. Thank you very much that was so appreciated. The photos you did it’s just a walk around with this lens were amazing. Really amazing not to say anything about your previous photography but it looks like your game stepped up maybe it accentuates your shallow depth of field style. I noticed this is your style in your calendar. Mine too I like to paint with the auto focus areas also. This is one reason I like to shoot with some of the old Nikon non-AI. They’re out of focus rendering microcontrast makes for some beautiful soft pictures. And all my d850 many of those old lenses are surprisingly sharp . But the oof areas and lit falloff areas are phenomenal. Because of the low element count microcontrast of those lenses. This lens doesn’t have those levels of inner tonal detail. I’ve seen this already in other reviews of portraits. But can be shot using the great dynamic range of the Nikon sensors to retain the highlight areas. In the way you show in this video. Killer photos and your videos are getting better all the time . Peace brother
@MattIrwinPhotography
@MattIrwinPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Troy, lovely to hear from you. Yes I remember the calendar :) Glad you are enjoying it. Thanks for your kind words about the images, this lens is a pleasure to use. It feels deeply cinematic and you don't even have to try hard. The 'dimensionality' brings just exactly what I want to and image - depth. And for this quality it is starting to give my Hasselblad a bit of a run for its money ... I am impressed and cannot wait to flex it a little harder, in the dark :) Stay safe sir. Thank you.

Your images look fantastic, bet that 50 will be on your camera quite a bit! There sure is some temptation there even if it's totally outside of my use case, where portability is a major consideration. Eagerly awaiting the pancakes, but happy to see the Z mount lens line up coming along nicely. Top end stuff like this fifty and the 2.8 zooms, mid range like the 1.8 prime series, and - hopefully soon - the compact prime l siblings of the collapsible zooms. A well thought out approach by Nikon, really like it. Give it another two years or so and it will all come together!

A bit of advice if possible Matt. I will be doing a portrait style shoot soon - something i've never done before - and the setting is quite a cramped area. Would you think that 35mm on a Z7 would work or is that to wide to cause distortion? It's not a pro paid job.

Matt, thank you for your excellent presentation on the 50mm 1.2, it certainly encourages acquisition by anyone debating its' aesthetic advantages. Questions: Were these wonderful shots taken with tripod and if so what kind? Do you have comparative shots with the Nikon 50mm F1.8S? What color saturation levels were you using? Is there any post production differences that would stand-out if compared to Nikon 50mm 1.8, 2.0 or 2.4?

Wow! Such a breathtaking lens. Have to stay with my 50mm f1.8S for now, darn it. I didn't say 'just' on purpose as we have TWO Z mount fifties now that are both punching above their weight. Please stage one of your 'infamous MI shootouts' between the two after the holidays. That alley shot w/ barber pole (14:25) is particularly striking, next (15:55) shop front w/blue door. WOWWWWWW! Miami Matt, you have the fixin's for your 2021 calendar well underway - it is even crowding out the new 70-200mm f2.8 in impressing me. Well done, whatever lumps received on the home front endured by pernicious photo purchasing greatly offset by the sheer freakin' optical qualities OOC! This is the glass we all hoped for in F, now delivered in Z mount ILC. Wonder how it compares to Zeiss Otus 55mm f1.4 F mount at 2/3 the price, probably giving them fits too. Enjoy family intensely in this crazy 2020, no further mention of hospitalized parent so trust that is improving.Take care, harve$t it all in after a lean season. Stay well and enjoy, my friend!

Hey Matt great review. A quick question as a general rule shooting hand held (not using VR) to get a sharp image you shot at at least the focal length in shutter speed i.e. 50mm would be 1/50 sec or faster. Giver the significantly longer barrel length of the 50mm f1.2 S lens would need to increase the shutter speed further. Ray

I am very interested in that impressive 50mm 1.2s but I have the 50mm 1.8s ,I'd love it if you could do a side by side test of the optical qualities (especially sharpness) to see if the 1.2 is actually any better because the 1.8 is great already and I am not sure if the new one would be worth it for just the bigger aperature,your photos with it look great,cheers Matt

It's an amazing lens in terms of image quality, but for me personally it would be too bulky. I plan to get the 1.8 version. On a related note, I would love to see you compare this lens with the 50mm 1.2 AI-s lens, and please compare all key apertures, not just f/1.2. I want to see how sharp they both are at f/4, f/5.6 and f/8. You rock, Matt!

The 50 1.2 AIS is not going to be in the same league. My copy was bought new in 2015 and I enjoy the images, but sharp is not a term belongs on that lens description. In the very center is can be but moving from the center wide open and it has a mind of its own. The results are dreamy, ethereal and can be beautiful, however. It is pretty sensitive to the direct of light falling on the front element for example backlight is high variable whether it handles it or not. It is nice to use on the Z6/7 because of the EVF showing you what you are actually getting, and more unknown on the D850. The 50 1.8 S is more predictable, handles light sources in the frame very well, and is sharper without color cast across the frame and much better in the corners. Until the 1.2, it was at the top of the Nikon 50s. All the S lenses are better than F mount at the same focal length. But optical perfection is not as important as many assume, sometimes the AIS produces better images despite having the weaknesses of non-coated lenses and corner drop off wide open. At 2.8 of 4.0 the AIS has much better performance but the S 1.8 does not get much better stopping down, it is great wide open and f8. The AIS is a niche lens, that is capable of artistic rendering the S lenses are too good to be artistically appealing bad like the AIS.

I`ve used the 50/1.2 AIS for 11 years in both street photography as well as portraiture. I just got the Z7II , finally switched from dSLR to mirrorless. (D700 in 2009, D810 late 2014) The Z7II feels like a great evolution over the D810 which was a great high-res camera at the time. Love all the baked in features like focus stacking, and finally being able to shoot up to 90 second exposures (i.e exceeding 30 without going into bulb mode) Love how Nikon's kept their ergonomics almost the same I`m on the fence of this new 50/1.2 - i don`t mind the price; just the enormous size & weight (not getting any younger. Want to lug around less weight, esp when travelling and having all your kit with you) - the old F version, as you know is tiny and light. And i don't mind the manual focus. I`ll see. I will probably rent one to see whether or not I actually like to upgrade to it. Seems like the sensible choice.

I have a z6 and the 50 1.2 F mount. my photography is either landscape/ architecture or evening events / family, the bokeh for the architecture and evening portraits are lovely... sometimes breathtaking. i cant see personally how i could ever use the 1.2 autofocus lens in the evening events as its just too big and will prevent anything candid. I do regret not buying the z 1.8 when it was on special offer, though the chances are, is that if i had it i would not have bought the 1.2mf. I must say that the 1.2 mf is probably my favourite lens to use. On the whole if i am taking photos i now prefer manual focus lenses, if i am doing video now that the firmware is good enough i prefer af and use my 24-70 s. I love that in low light i can take beautiful photos hand held without flash. As someone that never had Nikon before the z6 i doubt il ever be able to focus video manually as am still unable to turn the lens the wrong (Nikon) way first. In low light I doubt i could do quite as well with the the 1.8 af even though ibis gives you most of the light back in longer exposure, this is not as helpful for candid photo taking. I do love your videos, and enjoy listening to your thoughts and enthusiasm :) I do hope a 50 1.4 af s will come along and only be a smidge bigger (or the same) as the current 1.8 (i personally dont care how heavy it is) that would be my happy lens. You should do a detailed comparison between 50mm 1.8s and 1.2s. 1.8 is considered the sharpest lens for Z system and I'm really curious to see how 1.2 competes (ofc both at open wide). Also, 1.8 has basically negligible LOCA and it's pretty insane, please do a comparison video.

Looks like an awesome lens for stills. I'm not a video guy but was distracted in the opening segment by the juddering action of fast movement, especially your hands, like the lens wasn't keeping up, or too slow fps rate or something. Do you know what the cause of that is...camera or lens?

@@MattIrwinPhotography Too bad - the 58mm 1.4 is stellar, but differently than you would expect. It actually is not that sharp but it renders a painterly quality that is very special. It is a lens that I intend to keep even though I have sold off my DSLR's. The 58 1.4 works perfectly with the FTZ adaptor - I'd say even better than it did on the DSLR as it now enjoys IBIS and focus points to the edge, but it is a really nice lens that I will continue to use even though I am getting my 50 1.2 S lens in the next week or so. Matt, if you are into 'softer' rendering lenses with great character then you should try this lens as well - like I said it is actually better and more fun to shoot with on the Z system than it was on DSLR.
